Hello. I already posted this once but now I have more money to spend on a phone (Yay!) So basically, I have 0-150€ to spend on a phone and I want a good phone for that price. The phone could probably be from some Estonian site or Amazon.co.uk (Or .com, I don't know if I have to pay taxes if I order from UK Amazon) I want unlocked phone, so I could use my SIM card. Thanks for your time :)

Edit: Here's a poll for you! You can choose between Just5 Spacer and Motorola Moto E :)

Edit 2: Another poll

Edit 3: So yea, I created another poll.

LG G2 Mini if you like small phone with respectable battery.
It's very nice for the value. I'm not really into flagship phones.

Ah you're a female? As a male, small size phone is a must for me. The second most important consideration is then the battery capacity and the third scratch resistant glass.

Mini is just the designation the screen size is 4.7 inch.

No no, I'm a male. I want 4-5 inch phone which would run games like Asphalt 8, Terraria and maybe some Android MMO. The minis that I've seen are just too small for me. I don't want to have a 3 inch screen.

Quad core Cortex A7 is extremely bad idea. About 80% of android software uses single core only, and over 95% uses one or two cores. (this is exactly why the new Tegra will have only 2 cores) So adding two more cores will work in 5% cases. (in most cases in only high-end, power consuming software, which won't work on Cortex A7 anyway) Cortex A7 is core build for low power consumption, not for performance. It's computing capabilities are pathetic (about 70% of Cortex A9 with the same clock frequency, and less than 50% of Cortex A15 working at the same frequency - which is still less powerful than new Karit cores) So 1,3 GHz quad-core Cortex A7 in many cases work as well as 1 GHz single core Cortex A9. If you can find dual-core Cortex A9, 1,2 GHZ or more - in most cases it will be about as powerful as 2GHz octa-core Cortex A7. But out of these two:

If you are looking for phone with e-mail and GPS - Moto E will do fine. And most likely it will be more durable.

If you are looking for phone which will perform well in games, or will be capable of using more complex software - none of them will work.

First question - what will you use this phone for? For games? Or maybe it should be only a phone with Internet/e-mail access? Or maybe a something you'll need for work with some special software which you will use?

If you'll need processing power than You'll want a Cortex A9 processor. A5 is basically ARM11 with ARMv7 instruction set - good enough for microwave, not enough for web browser. A7 is a power saving core - nothing special, but it can be used to power basic phone functions. Web browser, angry birds level games. Cortex A8 is where the power starts, but it is old and discontinued. Cortex A9 is upgraded A8. In two core configuration and decent graphic chip (Mali-400 MP4 300 GHz+ will do fine) it will be enough to run most of the games in Google Play store. Programing this things is the stuff I do for a living - so trust me. Cortex A5 are just a sick joke in a phone, and A7 are limited to some uses only.

Out of all of these phones only Xperia L got decent processor. Karit cores are much more powerful than A9. (about 40% more powerful than A9 at the same clock frequency) I've got it in my Phone (Xperia T, so it's got higher processor frequency, and better graphic system) It is the only one which will run more demanding games. Out of all these phones it is the one which I would buy for myself.

Moto E isn't as powerful as Xperia L (Xperia J, M and M2 are just a sad jokes) but if you don't require power than Motorolas are good quality, and it's got Gorilla Glass 3 - so it will be durable and Motorolas (at least the ones I had contact with) are reliable. It is the phone which I would recommend to my sister.

And one more thing - if you'll chose some other phone - don't jump to FullHD or something. (I also used to sell these things - I could prove to you that any screen is better than any other - never trust what you see in shops, also the manufacturers are on our side - just hit auto on FullHD and 4K panels - 4K will always look better at that point, but if you adjust the settings manually - there won't be any difference at all) In phones there are usually adjusted wallpapers and icons, or video playback with different compression settings. Sometimes manufacturers prepare video which has compression adjusted to look good only in specific resolution. Anything less - and there will be artifacts visible. All of this is to "prove" that FullHD on phones and 4K every else is better. It isn't. And more pixels means more work for graphic processor. So 720p in many cases looks better than FullHD while the rest of the hardware is the same. If you can - use your own material to comparing screens. Set brightness, contrast and saturation to 50% (on phones saturation and contrast are usually locked) and run your own high quality video file.

Oh, sorry for not answering your question. I want a phone which would run games like Asphalt 8, Terraria, Plague Inc and maybe even Minecraft. I'm pretty sure that Xperia L will be super awesome for me because I have Nokia 5230 (If I'm right, it has 128 MB of RAM) :)

Maybe LG Optimus L9 II?

  1. I have no idea which games will run at high, and which will run at medium, and which won't run at all. The only way to know for sure is to take a phone, install a game and launch it. You can also search for a game title with adding a phone name on youtube. If it runs - someone probably recorded it. My guess is that Asphalt 8 should work on both Xperia L and LG L9 II without framerate issues. Not sure if on high or medium - but it is my educated guess, not fact.

  2. So a game phone. L9 II and Xperia L both will do fine. Choose the one which better fits in your hand. L9 II is slightly more powerful, but Sony Launchers (at least until 3rd quarter of 2013 - I haven't tested any launchers since then) were using slightly less resources. Asphalt is more resources demanding than Plague Inc. I don't know a thing about Terraria.

  3. This Nokia isn't bad. It's just old. But you can still hack WEP and WPA with it (WPA2 is beyond it's capabilities) Also I used to love programming on S60. And security gaps made it wonderful base for Hacking Phone. Have you considered a phone with Windows? It's got some advantages.

  4. I don't really have time to search a website for phones. Also I've got no idea in which language it is. I speak English, Polish and a little German. It is not one of these three. Also I don't have a time for this.

  5. Like I've said before - LG G9 II vs. Xperia L is a choice of personal preferences. Some people can't stand one launcher or another. I for example like to check how the phone feels in my hand before buying. That's why as long as Xperia T hardware will be enough for me I won't change a phone. I just love the way it fits my hand. And I also spend a lot of time customizing it's software, and I don't want to waste time doing it again on new phone. I could have now something more powerful - I just prefer this one. You can't ignore personal feel on something which will be used as often as phone. Go to a shop, find both of them, spend some time checking them out - choose the one which feels better for you.

Okay, good. I don't really call, and if I have to call, the length of a call will be around 2 minutes. Also, do you know, does it run Asphalt 8 and if it does, on which settings? :)

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know if it can run Asphalt 8, because I only used it for 2 or 3 weeks, because I wanted to use the calling function on it too, but it was unusable. You cannot even talk normally with it even for a minute. The call was breaking up or disconnected, or you or the other side cannot hear anything at all. I gave it back to the provider and they gave my money back immediately and I bought a Galaxy S3... There was not much difference in price and it was worth it... Three of my colleges had Xperia L too and they have the exact same problems with it, so it's not just one faulty phone we're talking about...

I've searched the web for this problem, and I haven't found any information about it. There are three possibilities:

  1. Some faulty Batch of phones were send to your operator. Unusual, but it happens.

  2. There are compatibility issues between carrier and phone (there was a problem like this between one of HUAWEI and polish Orange - phone was completely unusable, and they were advertising it in TV) Also unusual, but it happens.

  3. All people on Internet are lying about call quality (most opinions are that it is average, few that it is above average, few that it is below average, but acceptable) I have no idea how probable this scenario is.

I suggest you to add a couple of euros to your budget and get Xiaomi Mi3. It is an amazing phone that has specs on the level of current flagships for 3x times smaller price. Or you can get Xiaomi Redmi 1s, a phone that surpasses Moto G in specs and camera, yet it's cheaper.
