I love beer. I love exploring the many different styles of beer and comparing different beers from within the same style. I love brewing my own and experimenting with different recipes, ingredients and techniques. I love tasting beer and taking notes of nuances (as my limited senses and knowledge allow), I sometimes even write a short review about a beer that I liked (or one that I didn't). I’m ok with a bit of a buzz, although it’s not a goal in itself. I normally don’t get any buzz because I drink a bottle or so a day and that’s simply not enough to have any such effect on me. I don’t enjoy getting drunk and practically never do.

The poll here unfortunately doesn’t support voting for multiple options, so I'll go for a short survey format...

  • What is your favorite brewery and beer?
  • What is your preferred beer style (pale lager / pilsner, dark lager, IPA, stout, Belgian ale, wheat beer, etc…)? alternatively, what beer style don’t you like? If you (think) you don’t like beer, share your experience too.
  • Have you ever brewed beer at home or considered to?

See the first comment below for a bit about homebrewing and of course the giveaways :-)

Update: Quiz answers. The quiz is here if you want to try it before seeing the answers...

Clarification to Plan B members about removal from the group: I invited all beer quiz solvers who commented on the Bierzerkers giveaway to this group, so that they can join the other giveaways. Now that all the giveaways were delivered I reset the group back to 0 members. Nothing personal, and sorry for not making this clear enough (I thought about sending an announcement, but figured that explaining it in the group description was sufficient, but it seems it wasn't). For the upcoming Coffee and Homeroasting thread I'll use a dedicated group, not reuse one I'm otherwise using as temporary group to get some giveaways beyond the 5 entries mark. So again, nothing personal, and sorry for the confusion. Cheers!

I'd be curious to read such a thread, but not knowledgeable enough about the subject to start this thread myself. Any volunteers? :-)

Somehow i stumbled on this thread. Then it turns out the title is interesting.

What is your favorite brewery and beer?

  • Definitely "Leo". I only tasted it when i had a vacation at Thailand. And maybe that's only where you could buy it. You gotta try it. It's the best I've tasted in my life so far. (Yes, literally my life)

  • It had the right balance of everything i liked in a beer as far as my experience in beer drinking goes.

  • Give me a reply when you've tasted it already. And let me know what you think. :)

Are you referring to this beer? Most reviewers don't seem to be very enthusiastic about it. Do you recall what specifically you like about it compared to other beers in this style (pale lager)?

Yieaahh.... I think so. I don't know what happened to those reviewers but i swear that beer was really good. It's not just me, this beer was recommended by the people in the house we visited. And everyone, i mean, everyone of us (i think there were 8 of us) who were offered that beer had the same satisfied reaction as i did that time. We were all talking about it like how we wished they exported it to our country and stuff. So i know it couldn't just be me.

If you're asking about characteristics that i liked, it may have been because it was soft to the throat but had that kick at the same time. I remember the kick wasn't too sudden too. It had it's effect almost immediately but in a smooth transition. The fizz level was almost softdrink-ish but you know you're drinking beer because of its distinct taste and aroma. I remember it was served cold to us.

I never understood how some people use beers to relax. I don't even believe they're telling the truth. Because beers where i come from are either too hard (be uber hyper and batshit crazy drunk no matter how controlled you are) or too "light" (just keep on going back and forth to the c.r. then boom, get batshit crazy drunk). But with this beer, i can imagine downing just one bottle, feel good, do feel good stuff, maybe eat while drinking it, sleep.

It's interesting how those reviews turned out to be. Maybe beer taste preferences are on the opposite sides of the spectrum for eastern and western people, idk. E.g. (This is going to be a story again, sorry) I was looking forward to drinking "Heineken" because it was so heavily marketed and wherever you see it, it's almost as if people express that this is the goto beer. Then i got a taste on that same Thailand trip. I hated it. it was just disgusting, it felt like it was just water mixed with bitter gourd juice. That's it. I couldn't imagine myself drinking it again. Not even if a smoking jet-hot beautiful girl would offer it to me.

So yeah, maybe "leo" is optimized for Asian tastes.

Time to dig up the old beer thread!

A year has past since my last reply here. About a year ago beer became from a cheap way to get drunk to a real hobby (the tasting that is).
I discovered untappd (my nick there is " snivoos", feel free to add me. Yes I have a Thundercats avatar).
Btw, Untappd is a great app. Every beer lover should use it.

In a year I tasted over 500 different beers (and only got drunk just a few times).
I got more interested in the brewing process, the different kind of beers, hops, etc. Visited some local home brewers (and made some new friends).
I'm not an expert but I now do know what I like.

Some of my favourite beers I tasted this month:

  1. Noa Pecan Mud Cake Stout by Omnipollo.
Simply the best there is for me atm. There's also a Barrel Aged available, but frankly it doesnt add that much, its just more expensive.
  2. Big Fat Five, a double Ipa by Uiltje
  3. Todd the Axe Man by Surly/Amager
