I understand that being nice is just a nice thing to do and I have no problem with that. To my understanding however winners are chosen at random and whether you leave a comment saying thanks or not you probability of winning the giveaway is still the same correct?

It just appears to me that some people think it will increase their chances of winning?

Wow, how cynical do you have to be to think that someone saying "thank you" is doing so for selfish purposes?

I've seen that sentiment multiple times in this thread as well. As if people can't say "thanks" simply because they are truly thankful for the chance to win a giveaway? Nah, couldn't be that.

coz it's a common decency n politeness concept. . .it may appear as spam, but it ain't,it's just a proper thing to do.and the winner of one such GA thanks the GA creator with proper response,be it real or fake-it's that simple.

Saying thank you does not improve your odds of winning a giveaway, it does however improve your odds of not being a self entitled ass-hat. What harm does it do to simply let someone know that you appreciate their efforts? Folks are giving things away, the least you can do is type something. It's like if someone held a door open for you and all you do is stroll right in without a word. Perhaps to you it seems like a trivial action, but the least you can do is say "Cheers" or" Thanks" or "Sorry for the trouble." Granted, if the person explicitly states not to thank them, then by all means defer, but good god have some consideration and respect, if not for the act, then at least the person initiating the action.

Because it's polite to say thank you for something you didn't work for, yet may still have an opportunity to win. You can buy everything nowadays, but manners...that there's something you learn. ;)

I'll comment if I have something to say about the game featured in the giveaway, or the giveaway description or creator - otherwise I don't say anything. I'd rather show my appreciation by giving the occasional expensive and/or popular game to the community (as well as any duplicate games I have), then reply with what often feels like an impersonal thank you.

I say thank you to people who make giveaways because I appreciate their generosity. Sometimes when people see that people appreciate what they're doing, they will want to do it more. So it's not just appreciation, it's also motivation.

Thanks for the chance.
Thanks for sharing.
We can't do anything for the giveaway holder, just thanks and thanks again.

I ask people to at least say something a bit more than just an empty thanks. It did work, although there were some snarky ones like "something more than thanks! lolz," of which I didn't actually mind and found it a bit funny (emphasis on a bit lol).

With this, it feels like the people commenting on the GAs are actually sincere enough at least, and not as if a horde of robots are just spamming your giveaway.

We're showing a little gratitude to the person who is giving away the game. We're given a chance at it, and the person giving us that chance is thanked.

Thanking the ga creator just for being nice and giving away free stuff? You're right: nonsense. Not if that doesn't increase my chances of winning. I only write comments and thank people if this will give me some benefit or advantage, obviously. If it doesn't, fuck it!

Well it does affect chances. I am just not sure which way. It would depends on the number of people who add to blacklists for not saying thanks vs the number who add for spamming thanks.

I once had someone very happy that I had written anything at all, when I won their giveaway. I guess you could make a point of commenting if you win, but it just seems better to do it for ever one you enter.

In the few give-a-ways Ive made I tell people not to say thanks in the comments but most don't read decsription so still say thanks. I would only expect the winnder to say thanks.

Most people probably mean "thanks for a chance".
