Yes I can (:

Your full name, address, phone number, email and last 2-4 digits of your credit card number might have been on the internet somewhere, just like the rest of all of us

just like the year 2000 there was a lot of buzz but nothing of importance really happened.

a gaping hole in what valve repeatedly said was an ultra secure system, is what happened... and the fact it was a valve glitch, and not an external force, is also pretty important... and given they want more and more information from users (mobile phone numbers, etc), this shows just how little they care about protecting all this information they gather... and given how many users steam has... id say something pretty important happened...

na....

if you use google your mobile phone has gone public long ago, credit card numbers were never available, and the users who saw someones else information weren't able to do anything with it, not change password, not buying anything, or trading with some else, at worst someone saw how much steam credit you have.

Im far from defending valve, their stupidity its what got them in this mess, but this not a security leak like many sites made them look.

well we could quibble over the availability of mobile phone numbers, but suffice it to say that others out there being able to link a phone number WITH your account name (which is what happened), is significant breach for steam, especially given its whole new security measure for steam. But its not about specific damage done to accounts during the glitch, and more about the fact that it actually HAPPENED. Just because you didn't have your steam wallet or items stolen, doesn't mean the glitch isn't significant in its representation of valves ability to secure and keep private the account details you expect to be safe and not broadcast publicly - THAT is the importance of what happened.... its not something people should just shrug and say 'who cares'.. Who's to say it wont happen again? That it wont be something worse? Valve doesn't seem to treat our privacy and security as importantly as they claimed to, if such a failure happened with no outside forces being responsible.

my point is essentially that the glitch has revealed how nonchalant valve seems to be about security, thats all :)

but couldn't the point that nothing of importance really happened despite the leak, can be seen as a plus for their security measures?
Because there are no many steps and rules attached to accounts, this leak wasent enough to compromise stuff :P

I think TB said it best:
"Will be interesting to see how that shakes out over the next few days. There is a key difference between user data exposed through a hack and user data exposed due to Valves own mistake. It's totally fair to be mad at companies that lose your data through a hack. They should have done a better job protecting your data. However it's also worth considering that they were attacked and no form of security is 100% bulletproof. You don't have to condone a company in that position but you can at least have a certain degree of sympathy that they were also the victim of a crime. In this case, Valve doesn't have this defense. They were not the victim of a crime, they were the perpetrator of a negligent act which has the potential to put some of its users in harms way. Hopefully that clears up some of the misconceptions surrounding this situation and clearly explains why it is entirely ok to be upset about it."

Emphasis mine

hey man im not saying this is not stupid, or something peeps shouldn't be angry about, personally i feel disappointed.

Maybe is that i feel some sympathy, as a fellow software developer myself, i know how a little change can have massive terrible repercussions, witch off course are not what the developer wants, in the quest for optimization many mistakes have been made, i seen them in all areas, from Microsoft to Siemens.

I just think that the security measures they implemented, some of them relatively soon, have prevented a bigger disaster and that deserves some credit too, more because probably the team that made the fuck up is a different one from the one that takes care of security, probably, idk really. xD

Some might say... they prepared for unforeseen consequences :v!!
