Man, I owned so many imported, third-party peripherals for my Sony Playstation. One of my favorite accessories was a memory card that offered 15x the save space of my official Sony cards, letting you toggle thru fifteen different "pages"
One day I found that all but the first, default partition were mysteriously empty. That was definitely soul-crushing.

3 times this happened to me..
Once I accidentally deleted my 180 hrs Fallout 3 character. Started a new one after that instantly though and had just as much fun :D
Another time my sister accidentally overwrote our 98.7% save of Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga... Replayed the entire game for that 100%..
And lastly, playing Pokemon Ruby on an emulator on PC, I once closed the emulator while saving and I just got a shiny pokemon few hours ago.. Never again have I played a Pokemon game

I had a Gamecube memory card with 1019 save blocks, and it was pretty full. Didn't know the Wii made a habit of corrupting that particular size, was playing a couple GC games on it and... goodbye, countless saves. :(
...Most heartbreaking loss was when I turned on Pokemon Gold (which I'd spent more time with than Red even as a child) and the cartridge battery had died. RIP Toto and Rainbow. ;_;

Was more than halfway through the Doom 2 expansion "No Rest for the Living" when my savegame somehow got me stuck in a wall so I couldn't move. I was able to fix it using a NOCLIP cheat code, but that prevented me from getting the achievement for completing the expansion. I would have had to start completely over, so I just completed it without getting the achievement.

You know, you have playing a game for a while and then suddenly the save is corrupted or a little cousin/brother/son erased it by accident.
In my case was Guitar Hero 2 in the PS2, my little sister erased my saved game with all songs and characters. It was value for me because i suck at guitar hero :D.
