Heya,

I was wondering if you could suggest me some good city building games,

I am looking something like Caesar III (without war and not that hard (Caesar III is hard because of the game programming, not the mechanism/logic of the game)), just to enjoy the time.

I also know about SimCity, Anno and Tropico series, so I'd appreciate if you could share your suggestions except these.

Also they don't have to be on Steam, so any suggestion would be great!

Thanks in advance.

Also, try Cities in Motion

I skipped it intentionally because I thought it was only a train simulator, I'll look for demos(if any)/videos of that. Thanks!

It isn't? I'll have to re-install.

What do you mean, "sandbox".
You mean endless game with no goals, or actual ways of interacting with the environments and creating content that's not in the books?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Well, no wars, A goal would be cool, but that should not make me rage like Caesar III does. Updating the title to fix confusion.

Cities XL, but only until you build a big city, after that it's unplayable due to lags.

I believe in my PC :) Thanks!

Nothing to believe in, even with super computer it would lag, the problem is AFAIK is that the game can't use more than 1 core.

You can get the game's latest edition (platinum) for less than five bucks. Just go to SteamTrades or somewhere for that.

It's not exactly city building, but there's an old Monopoly Tycoon game that was very very fun, I got it about 10 years ago from a cereal box, you pretty much purchase different slots in the city, and build different kind of buildings and upgrades for existing buildings (all while other computer opponents are doing the same) and you try to beat them that way (hopefully I'm remembering this game right lol) but yea, it has a bit of the aspect of you're looking for, and my entire family enjoys it very much, so maybe look into it

EDIT: (forgot to mention, there's a sandbox mode for the game, not sure what it entails in the game itself though, but there is one) http://static.giantbomb.com/uploads/original/0/2800/1067393-monopoly_tycoon_4.jpg (image of the game <---)

Cities in Motion might be what you're looking for. I've never played it, but I think it focuses more on the transportation aspect than the actual building.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I skipped it intentionally because I thought it was only a transportation simulator, I'll look for demos(if any)/videos of that. Thanks!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I know there are buses and such in it, too. I think the point is that you have to figure out public transportation for an already built city, so it's not quite a city builder...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's ONLY transportation, not a city builder sandbox.

Maybe Childrens of Nile? And also a same creators of Caesar - Pharaon and Zeus: Master of Olympus?

I didn't like other games of them (Ares/Cleopatra/Pharaoh/Zeus etc.) That's me though. Thanks for Children of Nile suggestion by the way!

That game got no war, but can get really tricky though.

Just get SimCity 4 Deluxe and mod it (Network Addon Mod is mandatory; everything else as you wish). There's nothing better than SC4.

DAT ASCII GRAPHICS GAVE ME CANCER!

but srsly, I'l look into these, thanks!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I admit the graphics is not always pleasant but you get used to it. DF is really advanced in the city-building genre and it's free :)

Edit:

If you can't stand DF then try Prison Architect. It's not an entire city but it'll do I think.

You also have Gnomoria. It's a bit downgraded but it got better graphics if DF doesn't work for you.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

On the plus side, Gnomoria has a "Peaceful" difficulty where you just build and never get attacked. I don't think DF has this feature (Unless it's been added since last time I threw my life away...).

Prison Architect is also awesome, but, is Alpha and has lots of issues - so something you should try later or you'll find yourself very frustrated when things don't work like they're supposed to...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Yeah forgot about those things and PA's Alpha...

Thanks for the contribution :P

DF also has some graphic packs i recommend the lazy noob-pack launcher, if your uber lazy you can even dl it from desura (http://www.desura.com/games/dwarf-fortress) with the noob-pack you can turn off AI attacks so its all building/starving

I didn't like Pharaoh much, but never heard of Emperor, Thanks for the suggestion!

IMO Emperor was the worst of the sierra city building series, definitely the best was Zeus: Master of Olympus.

Yeah, it didn't drag me in like Pharaoh did. However, that's why i linked the article for the City Building Series. There are some awesome games in that article

Caesar III was so fun. :D Someone mentioned Dwarf Fortress. Idk about you, but the game was really hard for me. (The ASCII graphics didn't help, either) You can always try Gnomoria. It's similar to it, imo.

In a completely different style than Caesar III, but really fun, you should try Constructor. (And it's on sale right now on GOG :p)

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

YES! Constructor is the bestest - I like how it was the "peaceful" version, contrary to Mob Rule which was too fast paced for me.

However, OP, these are totally not sandbox city building... they are city builders, though...!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, exactly! I played Mob Rule only once (the entire campaign), there isn't a "free game" mode as in Constructor...

As Zebulan said, the game isn't entirely a sandbox, and you have some "missions" to realize from time to time if you want to continue the game.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wow, Constructor was always too strange for me...played it when I was like 10.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hehe, I started to play it when I was like 10 too... The first games were so difficult, with all the requests of the tenants! XD And then, game after game, I finally finished it once, and again, and whith money cheat, and without, and again, trying to build all the luxury houses, or trying to only "sink" all the opponents houses, ... :-D
Definitely one of the best games of my childhood!

And don't forget the introduction movies! :-D
