I have been using AVG Free Antivirus for about 2 years now I think, but now I've seen some discussions in which people have called it terrible, saying that it slows down your PC a lot, comes with adware, etc. So, now I uninstalled it, but I'm pretty paranoid about getting a virus or trojan, especially because I don't want to lose my Steam account. Can anyone recommend a good antivirus? I heard that Avast is pretty good, but I'm not sure yet.

I have a coupon code for BullGuard Internet Security, it's already 50%, and you should get another 50% stackable offer with this coupon, because in other way they gave me a useless coupon. This is what the email says:

"Congratulations! As an SSC Gold member, you have been randomly selected to receive a code for 50% off BullGuard Internet Security from SAPPHIRE Select Club. Activate by September 30, 2014. Your key can only be used once.

Your code is: XXXXXXXXX

Redeem instructions:

  1. Go to www.bullguard.com/sapphire
  2. Click on Buy Now
  3. Click on “Use discount coupon”, insert discount coupon and click “Submit” to redeem the 50% discount.
For any issues redeeming your code, please contact BullGuard support directly at support@bullguard.com
    etc..."

If someone wants to buy it add me on Steam I will give you the coupon code, it expires on 30th September, I know nothing about this antivirus really. This comes from Sapphire Select Club, because if you got a GPU from them you can join there and win stuff, games and programs.

But for my self I use AVG.

I don't recommend ESET, I got a virus that completely shut him down. I'm using Kaspersky now.

You can use one antivirus resident and 1 on demand (disable scanning auto).
Add Malwarebytes and virustotal uploader and you are pretty much shielded.
Also A mensual rootkit specific scan is mandatory.

Or use Linux for risky activities.

If you don't use Norton everthing is fine xD

To be honest, it doesn't matter what AV you use, there are always people ranting against it and tell you that the AV they use is so much better.
No one will ever say that the AV he uses isn't the best. Thats why almost everyone will say that the best AV is the one they use.
If you never had any problem with AVG then just stick with it.

Avast 2014 (internet security) just bogs my system down, only after it's loading windows, it's a process that runs and kills my HD and speed (yes I cannot afford an SSD where I live) and not sure it would make a difference.
If there were a way to solve that then I'd be happy.
Tried Avira too, but the effin annoying ADS popups drove me crazy, I mean, you had those by tons, every 10-15 mins you'd see a big red ad right in the midle of the screen, BUY ME BUY ME!

Used to use MSE but now pretty much everyone says it sheield you as much as a grill or a drilled plank. What do you do with a software that doens't detect anything anymore, no matter how fast and simple it be.

Thank you, everyone! I decided to get Avast, since quite a lot of people recommended it. Hopefully it will work well.

Just install Sandboxie, if you are not sure about a certain website or a program, use Sandboxie to run it. You can also use virustotal.com to quickly scan files or websites.

Since I checked out a preinstalled version on an ASUS Netbook I bought about 4 years ago, I'm a fan of Trend Micro.

It is really friendly with your resources, even on the netbook. Never had false-positives.

Once after a gaming session, I forgot to activate the Real-Time Scan I deactivate sometimes for demanding games. Later then, I was browsing some 'shady' ☺ sites (with scripts enabled) and to my surprise Trend Micro still was capable blocking some malicious scripts, because of the cloud based prescan of their 'Smart Protection Network', which is a service implemented in their software.

They seem to be strong on the market with corporate solutions as well and have a nice security blog. You can download a free trial, of course.

The combination of those two should be sufficient for most people.

Don't use Norton. It doesn't work at all.
It's best to use a combination of different (good) programs.

For example, I use Kaspersky for general anti-virus stuff. But I use Malwarebytes and Spybot for malware detection. I also use Scotty the Spy dog to help with detecting incoming threats.

Also should mention, malwarebytes works surprisingly well and it wonderful at detecting hidden malware that may be in your system. Highly recommend.
