As in title, can I check if a key is valid or fake/used without adding to my Steam Account?

No. Unless you already own the game, in which case Steam will tell you "Duplicate product" and won't activate the key.

I thought it would say "product owned" even if the key is dupe

I wonder if a key I have for Spec Ops: The Line would be able to be given away then.. I put it into Steam during a brain fart thinking it would ask me if I would like to put it in my inventory. Instead, it said it activated it... but I already owned the game (bought it through Steam, key was through Amazon). I was kinda mad.

It said it activated it despite the game being already on your account? O_o

Yeah... I was like.. wait, what? That said, it may have glitched and not actually activated. Maybe I will give it to a friend that wants the game to try.

It was probably a different version of the game, in which case the key no longer works.

Probably. Needless to say, it was a wasted $7.50 haha. I gave the key to a friend to try later today to see if it will work. We shall see!

It won't work.. but if you really already owned the game and it registered the key anyway giving you nothing more contact support about it. It happened to me before.. they won't give you a key back but they should offer you to transfer the registration to another account (your friend).

That's a good idea! I didn't know they would do that! Thanks!

there's no way to check a key.

you can try to ask valve support, I've heard of cases where they will check - but don't count on it.

They will never check any lol. According to Steam, keys are not meant to be traded or exchanged, only activated. Therefore they would tell you to try activating the key yourself and see if it works.

You can't, unfortunately. If you try to activate the key in your account and don't have the game, it will be added to your library if the key is valid.

Apart from activating it, Steam don't want you doing anything else with a key.....

Everytime I see post like this it seems to me it is people who want to be sure the key received is right but no use it to gift it, I mean they want just to cheat (I am not saying is your case).

Used it and that's it

I'm not so sure about that...I have a few keys lying around that I've gotten from facebook giveaways or some such. Nothing major - just Metro, Crayon Deluxe and that Fairie Solitaire. Maybe 1-2 more. Things that were given away by the thousands but I kinda let rot in my inbox as it was all during the holidays and I didn't set that stuff as a priority. I'd like to put them up for trade or whatever but since I'm only 95% sure they'e still valid, that 5% is holding me back since I don't want to be accused of being a scammer. I think I can at least put Crayon Deluxe up here but again, don't wanna take that chance now.

It'd be nice if I can verify via Steam that the keys are still good....otherwise I'd probably just do a ninja key drop at some point with that caveat that the codes may not work and then be accused of farming for rep with fake keys (on other sites, not specifically here). Ah well.

I prefer the way GOG handles codes. The person who originally bought the game and created the gift code can see which codes are redeemed, and by whom. The person redeeming the code gets to see what the code contains before confirming. Finally, if you redeem a code for multiple games and you already own some of them you can redeem it and get the games you don't have yet and then pass the code onto someone else who can redeem it for your leftovers.
