I want to give Final Fantasy a try...

Omfg, at this rate i'll have to buy all FF games on steam... I do hope they release every single one of them in there, except for the new gen one, that on diserves to be next gen console for a time then comes to pc, like FF13.

I do really hope they release FF10(best game ever) and FF12 (never played this one, and well some of the older ones aswell).

I played FF Tactics on the Gameboy and loved it. But I don't really like the rest.

Most of Final Fantasy isn't actually turned based (they usually use what they call an Active Time Battle system where you have to enter your commands in real-time.) Anyway, a rundown:

Final Fantasy Tactics (the original Playstation one and its remakes, not the GBA and DS sequels) is probably the best entry in the series, as people below said. But it's atypical -- it's a turn-based strategy-RPG with a deep class-changing system.

Beyond that, people tend to disagree on which one is best (except 8, which most people hate for a variety of reasons. A few people like it, but even if you want to give it a shot -- don't start with it; it's atypical for the genre.)

FF7 is probably the most famous entry and is very cheap on Steam. The graphics are a bit dated, because it was made for early Playstation 3D over 2D art, which hasn't aged well. Still, it's a fun game.

The numberings of FF3/6 and FF2/4 might be a bit confusing. Originally, the releases in the US skipped several games, so FFIV was released as FF2 and FF6 was released as FF3. Everyone calls them by their Japanese numbers now, though. The FF3 on Steam is the Japanese FF3, not FF6. Does that make sense?

Anyway, the Steam FF3 is decent, but it's very old (the original game was for the NES, although this is a major 3D graphics update.) The plot, dialog, and system are therefore a bit more simplistic than most games, and the combat is turn-based. Still, it's a decent game, and available on Steam.

FF4 is very good, and if it uses the DS translation I'm told that translation is particularly good, too.

FF1, FF5, FF6, and all the later ones are, I think, still only available on emulation on the PC. FF5 and FF6 are worth playing, though.
