Hey all - I know many of you probably aren't in Canada, but in case you suffer from mental health issues, or know someone who does, I just wanted to let you know about this initiative going on today.

I thought about posting this in DesertMouse1's You're Not Alone thread, but I wanted to make a seperate one for visibility

For just one day (Jan 27th, 2016),

Bell will donate 5ยข more to mental health initiatives for every:
Text message sent (Bell/Bell Aliant customers)
Mobile & long distance call made (Bell/Bell Aliant customers)
Tweet & Retweet using #BellLetsTalk
Share of the Facebook image

I know many of you don't know me, but mental health issues are something everyone could probably relate to - especially in secret..
If you would like to read a bit of my story, you can read it here
Hopefully it gives someone struggling some strength to carry on, or encourages you to be a friend to someone who is suffering.

Thank you for reading

Do you suffer from mental health issues, or do you know someone who is?

It's always been a sad thing to me how mental health issues are treated as taboo by most of society. It leads to feelings of shame and people aren't always able or willing to get the help they need. I applaud you for broaching the subject. I'll honor your request and spread the message across my social media accounts.

Yeah - I hope things are much different today than it was back then - bullying still exists, but at least there is a way for people to speak up about it!

ah yeah :(. There was actually a case here where someone took someone to court over twitter harassment - it got thrown out (didn't help that the person who complained fired back some shots :/)

Guys and girls, never feel like you are alone in this world, because you aren't. It's sad for me to see so many people around suffering from depression. Remember that there's always someone out there to help you out, so don't be closed to yourself. People should tell their problems somewhere, even here on steamgifts, and I'm pretty sure that everyone will try to help them out. If anyone needs help, I will be glad to help out. :) And here's a quote from the Hugo movie:
Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need. So I figured, if the entire world was one big machine, I couldn't be an extra part. I had to be here for some reason. And that means you have to be here for some reason, too.

Yeah =( Sadly it can be difficult for people who are living in a dark cloud - we can only try to encourage them and support em if we see something wrong

Read through your story, thanks for sharing it! I know you mentioned that you were wondering if you should have shared it or not, I'm not sure what is making you hesitant about it, but let me say that there is nothing to be ashamed of :>

and erm...bump!

I guess the hesitation is potential stigma (which, I guess is the whole reason for sharing it haha - ending it!)

Thanks for sharing your story, you're not alone! I had a similar experience to you too, which shaped me into who I am now. Honestly I wish I grew up without all my problems but it doesn't mean I can't do that now :) I think the world would be a better place if people just opened up, and not judge someone for who they are.

I'm seeing a shift in attitude a bit in how people see things like depression and other mental health issues - there's a ways to go, but it's getting better..
Thanks Ritona! I'm glad you are seeing the positives!

A good cause, but I've always thought that it's totally skeevy for companies to run promotions like this. "Hey everybody, we've got all this money we're willing to donate to charity, but we'll only do it if you give us a bunch of free advertising!"

I know it from my own experience. I had (possibly still have) depression disorders. This is not cool... I am not from Canada, so only one thing I can do to help is bumping this thread :)

I read your story and I can relate. I am also from Canada and also grew up as one of the few Asians in the whole city. I was the only
Asian in my class in elementary school until one year 3 Asian exchange students came. They were all boys and I remember so vividly how my best friend at the time said so casually, "I don't know how you can tell them apart... they're all the same." I've never been harassed for being Asian like you were but moments like that made me very uncomfortably aware that in other people's eyes, I was different. That wasn't what led me on my path to depression but I definitely related with you on that.

I also struggled in University except I didn't really have anyone to help me so I ended up shutting myself in my dorm room and basically living like a hermit. Depression completely ruined my university experience.

Thank you for sharing your story on this too Sinovera - it really sucks to hear someone go through something similar - shutting yourself off like that - especially at such a young age - It ruined my experience too [ I wonder how common this is... people closing themselves off in uni ] - but at least now we can try to look to the other side of things - it's all about perspective!

Thank you everyone for your kind words, words of encouragement, and for sharing your own personal stories

Even though the initiative is well over, it's important to keep the compassion for each other alive.
If you see someone hurting, don't be afraid to lend an ear or a shoulder to lean on. You could be a lifesaver.

Do employers want to hire people with mental health issue?
Because I met with some of my friends, they talk about "bad records" and advise my friend (who had a burnout due to long working hours) to not seek psychiatrist help.

there's still that stigma attached to mental health for sure when it comes to that - legally they're not supposed to discriminate but it's hard to prove this

o wow, brave of you to share your story using twitter. I admire your perseverance. it's a shame your childhood and twenties were so difficult to you, but it made you where you are today. And as i read it: that 's a brave young man getting there.
