Ubuntu isn't too hard to get into. I use lubuntu on my laptop and it works fine. Put an icon for all the shit he needs on his desktop and go with that. Linux and/or scripting is not a bad thing to teach a 10 year old, as long as you're not going to just dump it on him.

Their not internet ads, their actually injected into the browser from the laptop, so it won't work.

Oh, right. In that case I guess you can give him Linux and see if it's even possible for him to mess it up. For browsing the web and Linux games it's pretty straightforward and windows like. I hear AMD drivers are notably crappy at this time for it though as opposed to on Windows, so will that be with an intel/nvidia solution?

His laptop has integrated intel 3000 graphics, so it's already supported, so it should run it fine.

I got some really bad viruses before, I had to use linux for a while then I reinstalled a new copy of windows. Basically, you will either have help him fix his windows, help him stop downloading viruses, or help him learn a new OS, so then the decision is which would you rather do?

If gaming is a big factor for your brother Ubuntu or any other Linux distribution may not be the best way possible - a lot of game will not run on Linux. He can use WINE (but as you said he is a retard so it may be hard) but it will always be hard to do (DLind and configuring special files) and always inferior to win gaming for games that do not support Linux.
My suggestion? Format his whole HDD to a scratch, set up clean system and make him an user account without ANY permissions - not even DLing stuff. If he wants to DL game or a movie or sth - you can do it for him in few minutes and then wait for DL to finish - but on system with totally banned permissions he will have really hard time to mess it up. It's possible, but really hard - and in this case it's the best you can do.

My brother always figures out how to screw it up. Plus I used to put him as a standard user, and he would tap me on the back THE WHOLE DAY, and sometimes he evens spills water on me until I finally put in my password.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot, I wiped out and reinstalled Win. 7 from scratch, and taught him how to use it around a couple months ago, and now it's even more fucked up then it was before.

you wiped Win7 partition or all partition with rearranging new ones? because you know - malware he DLed could easily got stored on other partitions and screw your fresh install all over again - tl;dr sry, but you have to del all your data including your games and porn :(

I wiped the WHOLE entire partition, it was from 100% Vanilla Win. 7 scratch with all partition %100 wiped.

Their ads injected from the adware installed on the laptop. So adblock won't fix anything.

Yea I did all of that, the problem is that I can remove all the BS on his laptop in a couple of hours. My worry is that he keeps doing it over and over again. I cleaned out the chrome extentions, it's all legit stuff.

Teach him how to download stuff, or tell him that next time he should ask you to do it instead of doing it by himself. You can also put a bullet between his eyes :D
Srsly, my lil bro is also 10 years old, and I don't let him download stuff without consulting me. Sometimes he downloads some addware, but I remove it myself when I realize... Anyways, we should give em some lessons about the subject.

I do, I showed him all the basics. And not to click on giant ads that say "download" or "your browser isn't updated" ads. I also taught him to not go rapidfire on the next button when downloading programs. I've taught him a lot but it just doesn't seem to stick in his small-minded head.

"I also taught him to not go rapidfire on the next button when downloading programs."
No, your advice isn't that. Your advice should be this, which will make him look like a computer god :
Seriously, this does wonders. Just refuse to help him until he reads out loud what's on the screen.

Let him fix his crap, it will be good for him, to learn to use a PC and so. He downloads crap he lives with the crap. You are the older brother, the natural bully, and he is 10, old enough to slap him if he starts acting like an idiot, just dont share the same PC.

I think this might actually be the best solution. I live a busy life, and I really don't have the time for him to keep to pester me about Ubuntu. Plus I feel like this is the best solution, when I was 10, I had a TON of bullshit on my computer, as I got older, the more I learned myself. I've had my computer for 5 years and so far no virus, malware, adware, completely 100% clean.
Thank you.

Well Ubuntu is a solution, but he will annoy you very often asking you how to do this or that. Even for easy tasks, since ubuntu is ubuntu, he is 10 and he only used windows.

Based on the original posters description of his brother, I imagine this could very well happen. Instead of entering your password all day, you will be entering "sudo apt-get" (and the like) all day lol.
That being said, if you are confident you can teach him how to use a Linux distro, getting him started when he's young is the way to go. Then he can learn the harder stuff as he gets older. You may be creating another Richard Stallman, but at least there will be (potentially) one less computer illiterate person in the world

I'd recommend checking Mint out as well, I have used it to move a number of Windows users over to Linux with out much fuss. You can download the image and boot it off a CD or FlashDrive and check it out without installing it. Hell I installed Linux Mint for my Mom and she likes it better than Windows now because of less popups, less intrusive updates and adding new devices like printers is actually much easier than Windows. Windows makes me grumpy.

Another appoach:
There are programs that are mostly used by internet cafes that reset (not format type) the activity done on that pc daily. Only when the admin wants changes he disables the program, do maintainance and activate shield again knowing that whatever the user does download, games etc. the pc is going to reset to the state of admin's choice at the end of day giving total freedom to the user (up to some point)...
Start at alternativeto.net with Deepfreeze, RollbackRX etc. if you're interested in...

It's a great idea, but Ubuntu opens the path for even more serious fuck-up-ery on his part. You can do a whole lot more through Ubuntu than you can on Windows, and that means screwing things up even worse. Case in point, I may have deleted my MBR and boot loader back when getting people the Tux in TF2 was a thing.
I'd recommend teaching him how to actually use a computer for once. Like sit down with him for a while, teach him how to spot Steam phishing links, how to understand that the "ALERT YOU HAVE 3948 VIRUSES INSTALL OUR ANTI-VIRUS NOW" pop-ups are fake, how to use sandboxes, general good computer usage, etc. It'll be better in the long run.

Wipe the drive, install anti-virus, anti-malware, and adblock before anything else.

if he can learn Linux, it will only help him to learn computers better. grab him a copy of the linux command line and tell him to figure his own shit out. He might be pissy now but he will thank you in the future.

I have had a TON of experience with Ubuntu, I use it very much.
u
The problem is my little brother who is 10 years old keeps downloading a much of ad-ware and malware on his laptop. It's so fucked up that you can't even click on a blank spot on a webpage without it opening an ad. He can't surf even surf the internet properly without ads popping up left and right.
Right now he's using Win. 7. I'm thinking of changing his OS to Ubuntu, so that he won't be able to download all the BS. I understand that Ubuntu CAN get ad-ware and viruses, but it's less easy then getting it on windows, because of the fact that 99% of adware is made for Windows.
It seems like a good idea, it has everything he needs, the internet, open office, and steam. The next problem is that he absolutely sucks at using a computer. It will take him a long time to adapt to Ubuntu, so im going to have to teach him how to use it? Should I do it?
EDIT: Okay on steam the only thing he plays is small indie games (most are support for linux) and he plays a LOT of TF2, which is also Linux supported.
