So I was going to write a thread to centralize the deals on GG that beat the rest of sites, when suddenly realized that the discount didn't applied, checked and the pet is activated. Although the moderators on the tutor try to convince the users "permanent", "always", and "lifetime" are words without sense, the fact is that the promotion ended although you can still see the advertisement on IGN and on gamersgate sites. Weird and sad, but true.

You still can use the code G2PO to get a 5% discount. And it seems that they use twitter now to do concrete game offers, but they never told that by the regular mails, nor they explained that the pet was going to lose the effect. At least to me.

I got a mail today saying that the bonus should still work, but will stop working in ~48h - and yeah, this seems pretty awful to ign subscribers as that 15% off was quite a point to get the subscription imo and I totally agree... I don't see how "permanent" could mean anything else than permanent...

Just got this :(

Hello!

The IGN Prime discount promotion has expired. We hope you've enjoyed your 15% discount and that you'll stick with us both at GamersGate (for all your games) and at IGN (for all your news).

I believe the term "permanent" was used to illustrate that you would only need to enter it once, then the code would keep providing the discount. I definitely understand the confusion. However, the promotion is tied to a contract which in turn has now ended so I apologize for the poor wording and hope you understand.

Please contact IGN if you have any questions regarding your Prime membership.

The IGN Prime 15% discount will be taken down between Friday and Monday, depending on your IGN account status and if you are currently a paying subscriber of IGN Prime. Don't worry though, we've just entered into our yearly holiday sales, so there will be lots of games and awesome deals to be had - and this Holiday Sale is bigger than ever before!

Kind regards,

They had the worst deals out of any digital distributor anyway, at least in my region.

In the US, the IndieFort build a bundle was a pretty decent deal. You could get a bunch of games for not that much each. The current IndieFort Countdown bundle might be decent. 4 pre-selected games for $4, a new set of four each day, and a price reduction for every day that you buy the bundle. (So I guess if you buy all five bundles, you'll end up with 20 games for a total of $10?)

As for regular games, while their sales generally aren't as price-slashing as Steam, you can still find comparable cuts if you keep checking, and the occasional great deal. I wouldn't call them a primary shopping place, but once you've already got an account, it doesn't hurt to look at their offers.

I can't speak for countries outside the US, because I don't down how competitive GamersGate is elsewhere. I do know that digital download stores (including Steam) can have some weird pricing in other regions, though.

Well that's it for me. They are going to lose so much buyer this way because the IGN prime discount was infact for me (and for some of my friends) the only good motivation to buy something there. I mean, their prices aren't that great after all, Steam and Greenmangaming got better prices and get a decent discount many times.
Kinda lame i must say, that's not how "always" work.

I was irked at first when I woke up and found this in my email box, and I wrote a sternly worded, yet still polite response to Gamersgate about it. However, as the day has worn on and the responses from both Gamersgate and IGN have been largely non-existent, and otherwise just moronic, I have become increasingly pissed off.

I have bought extensively from Gamersgate in the past several months (since joining IGN Prime) and the primary reason I joined IGN Prime was for this discount. I have also urged friends and family to start shopping there or to shop there more. They sometimes have the best deals (even without the discount) and with the discount it was a no-brainer. I even have bought non-steam games there. I loved a lot of the features of their site and looked forward to what they might do with it in the future.

To put it simply, Gamersgate was my favorite online distributor and I held them in the highest regard until this. Now, I am deeply disgusted by both them and IGN (but, it's what I would expect out of IGN). There is a good chance I will never shop with Gamersgate again once I use up my blue coins (hopefully in the next couple days while my discount is still active). I certainly will be demanding a refund from IGN as well.

The word "permanent" remains clearly displayed describing the IGN discount, as the OP has made clear. Other words like "always", "lifetime", and "forever" are now or have been used. While it was IGN that is responsible for this (assuming Gamersgate did not in fact use these words) it was Gamersgate's responsibility to be aware of how these codes were marketed. That is just smart business practice. They SHOULD have known, and I am not convinced they did not know.

Some people have been apparently told by Gamersgate that the word "permanent" may have been misunderstood (by the users?) and that in fact meant that the discount code only had to be entered on the site once. This is bullshit. NOONE uses the word "permanent" in this way. If someone does they lack a good grasp of the English language. I realize Gamersgate is located in Sweden but IGN is in the US. They knew what they were saying or should have known. If in fact there is a moron running around IGN that does not understand what "permanent" means, they should be fired promptly.

Nonetheless, Gamersgate and IGN need to make this right, or else they will have incurred an irredeemable black mark as far as I am concerned.

Update

I sent a support ticket to Gamersgate (since I figure the email to the PR rep did not go anywhere). Got the following response:

*"thanks for your detailed, well-reasoned account. I will relay the sentiment to the senior staff members.

I understand that the wording would feel misleading, and thank you for getting in touch with us about it, but unfortunately we aren't able to provide life-long discounts (although that would admittedly be pretty cool). Again, I really do apologize for the poor choice of words, and we will make sure to be more attentive with our, and our partners', promotional material in the future.

I understand that this situation is especially aggravating for someone who saw the discount as the main reason to sign up with IGN. In this context, I want to thank you again for the rational manner in which you laid out your argument."*

Agreed with this.

I've bought plenty of nonsteam games there, and it really looks like I won't touch their site ever again :/ I'm glad I managed to pick up two games early this morning with my discount; seems like they'll be my final purchases.

I will be writing complaints to ign and gamersgate. Hopefully others do as well; perhaps if they get enough anger they'll work to reinstate it. And perhaps reword lifetime discount. They have no excuse for misunderstanding, no one could "misunderstand" the word "permenant":|

Just got through writing a lengthy complaint to Gamersgate support. Already tried to email the PR rep back that emailed everyone this morning but I doubt that will go anywhere. Also posted here, IGN boards, and Gamersgate game tutor.

If this goes down I will be promptly demanding a refund from IGN, and if they refuse I will report them to the BBB.

I never got the email, but I no longer have the discount. I didn't get any sort of warning, and still haven't received that email. I understand it takes time to email everyone but I still feel the point stands.

It's a shame though on their end. They try to say it is because a "contract" ended, but they clearly didn't renew or extend said contract. They can point the finger at IGN all they want, but they share the fault just as much. I wonder what the reasoning was behind not extending it? Perhaps they thought it increased their sales enough, or (more likely) they felt like they were losing too money. Because if that's the case they're going to be losing a lot more money, and sales because of this.

As for "permanent" meaning you enter it in once, the word lifetime was used. Or does that also mean, you only have to enter once in your lifetime?

I never actually bought anything from GG. Considered it plenty of times. Almost went ahead with a few, but never actually did. But I kept coming back to consider simply because I got that 15% discount/BC bonus. I was sure I'd take a deal once I found something that made that extra 15% competitive, like say, Torchlight 2.

Now it's gone. And since the deals are less frequent, the library more confusing, and the site being largely just another outlet for steam products, I doubt I can care about it any more.

Ah well.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, really if you get any game that is on sale as a 3 or 4 pack, and then have the 15% off on top of it, it's a great deal.

Plenty of other deals have been competitive or even a bit better (ex. When Skyrim was on sale a month or so ago, GG had it 2 or 3 dollars cheaper BEFORE discount than Steam did, and it's Steamworks). However, their decision to revoke the IGN discount has marred them in my eyes.

Here is the response to my support ticket:

"thanks for your detailed, well-reasoned account. I will relay the sentiment to the senior staff members.

I understand that the wording would feel misleading, and thank you for getting in touch with us about it, but unfortunately we aren't able to provide life-long discounts (although that would admittedly be pretty cool). I've been sending similar tickets to them today, and just got the "we meant permanent to mean you just enter it once" line. So I guess I'm gonna get that response next. I'll continue sending tickets in until I get a response that either a) makes sense, or b) pleases me enough to make me stop harassing them. Because fuck this.

Yeah. I think I partly got this response because I addressed the "we meant permanent to mean you just enter it once" response in my message. I had seen others get that response and thought it was bullshit too.

There is no way that "permanent" could or should be used in that way, and as I pointed out to them, even if they THOUGHT that's what it meant, they known now that it is not. It is not much different than posting an improper price by mistake. The expectation (and sometimes the law) is that the merchant honors the posted price, or in this case the posted deal.

As I mentioned in chat yesterday, that's not confusion or misunderstanding. That's just misleading on their part. Permanent means permanent. Could have mentioned that there was a contract, or that the deal could be revoked at any time.

When GMG can afford to keep Borderlands 2 around the $40 near constantly since launch for everyone, I'm sceptical when a bigger distributor can't honour a 15% deal for only a fraction of their customer base.

This "lifetime" customer will be looking elsewhere. Only response to my email to them (so far) is an automated "Thank you for contacting the MCV (Massive C*nts & Villains?) award-winning retail legend that is GamersGate", your feedback is important to us, don't hold your breath though, sucker, blah-fucking-blah-email.

My fallen minion will haunt you for the rest of your days, and orchestrate wave after wave of DDOS attacks on your server from beyond the grave, you dishonourable, lying cheapskates. I'll let you know how I get on, but a cursory google shows that the response to my initial email is a standard cut & paste.

Expecting more of the same:

"Hello <username>,

Sorry to here you've got sand in your smalls over this issue, but when we said permanent, we were actually referring to the word's alternative (but etymologically more appropriate) definition, which is closer to the generally understood meaning of "temporary". Also, please disregard any information given on previous banners displayed on the Gamersgate and IGN websites. We're fairly certain you misunderstood them too.

Well, if you've still "got the face on", we'd rather you took it up with IGN and stopped bothering us.

Love you long time...

Well, here is the reply I received.

In all honesty it's pretty much what I was expecting. The guy can't do anything other than defend his employer, since the IGN discount is an open and shut case, but I still vehemently disagree with the points made regarding the word "permanent".

It goes without saying that, even if we take his interpretation of "permanent" rather than mine, as detailed in his email, the fact remains that I am still a fee paying IGN subscriber, and appear to have permanently (true meaning of the word) lost this "permanent" 15% discount...

I don't see much point in replying, since there is little more to say, but am reassured that the senior managers at Gamersgate, upon hearing of my dissatisfaction, will surely be deeply sympathetic under the circumstances...
