RTS/Shooter whatever. I saw Verdun was thinking about pulling the trigger. The community is small and my friend told me it sucked. so eh, I dunno.

On another note. How come WWI games are almost non existent? Early 2000's we got spammed with WWII games. We still see them today. Now we got a bunch of modern urban warfare crap...

Why no WWI? I am a World War II nut, but that has been done to death. Don't care for that modern warfare crap much. WWI pretty much defined modern warfare for the last 100 years.I think it's a under used time for games and movies.

IronStorm might appeal, though its a bit different from what you want. Set in an alternate 1964 where the Great War is still going on.

I second Rise of Flight.

I think Jutland Pro is also good but it's expensive and old. Never played it though!

i think because a lot more people could relate to WW II and at the time i bet every family had someone in the family that served during the war or had some part in it

plus the tech at that time was limited so maybe was not as appealing

Victoria II is not really good but it is not terrible but that is a WWI simulation

there is a couple mods for existing games

but here is a list of WWI games not a big list as it is a niche market

A lot of generals and leaders from World War II also served in world war I. Stalin,Hitler,Churchill,Patton. I bet if people checked their family history; they'd find they had family in WWI also :P

There was a lot of military innovation during World War I. Both sides were desperate to break the stalemate in Northern France. We had the first Tanks,Aerial Warfare,WMDS,Submarines.

To my knowledge, no-one releated to me served in WW2, or WW1 for that matter (as far back as I've looked, there might be someone on a branch of the family tree back in the 18th century who's decedents ended up serving in one of the world wars).

More importantly, I would not recommend Victoria 2 (or 1) for the WW1 experience. The Victoria games are excellent, if you like grand strategy, but the way they simulate warfare really does not seem to work that well for WW1, at least not the western front.

i did not say that everyone had someone that served in world war II i said just about everyone knows someone who had served in world war II or had some part in it be it they went to war or they where a nurse or helped build planes/tanks and what not that is still having a part of the war and that was my point that a lot people have ties to it so it makes sense that it would be a more popular choice

and i did state that Victoria II was a simulation and that it was neither good or bad
so more importantly you pointed out what i already have

and yes there was break through in tech in World War I but it did not have the same impact as panes and tanks did in the second war imo

none the less bottom line is Word War I games are limited due to appeal as more people know about world war II then one

I did not really say what you said about Victoria 2 though. You said that it was a simulation, I pointed out that it does not do a good job at simulating WW1, or at least not the western front (it works for the eastern front though).

And I don't think I know anyone who served in WW2. Life of not being in a country that had a major role in the war.

You should still try Verdun when it leaves early access. It's a realistic shooter along the lines of Red Orchestra and ARMA, so not a lot of casual FPS players would usually like them

I'm still thinking about it. Even though my friend warned me about it. It's only around key in trade price. That's not much of a gamble.

You're really limited safe to say. WWI just doesn't carry the weight among the masses as WWII. I think its because it lacked a true clear-cut enemy and the result of it led to WWII. WWII was more easily made into games b/c, killing Nazis is pretty universal. The Germans of WWI were not that kind of enemy. That said, I'll never forget the Normandy level of MOH: Frontline, and the first COD. I have some of those maps of COD lodged in my memory for life (Carentan FTW).

I'm going to say your friend is wrong about Verdun. It's not perfect by any means as its early access/beta, but I have had a blast since I have started to play it. The community has seen a really nice surge since the sale the other day. I had it for a while before the sale, but only in the last few days did I get into it. It compares to Red Orchestra in certain respects, but in others it doesn't. Hell, I'm not the most adept at MP shooters, but I was killing it in Verdun in my first game. I had 23 kills lol. The best part about it is the authenticity. Running through the trenches, etc. It's just not fully realized yet. There are only a few maps and two game modes at the moment. That said, not once in the 4 or so hours I've put into it have I run into an empty server situation or games with very few people. They've all been packed. Get it now while its cheap! You can find traders with it for just over 1 key if you do it quickly.

I'm going to second Valiant Hearts. It's a beautiful game and it tells a wonderful story. It's very much story driven and the gameplay is minor puzzling/platforming. It's absolutely worthwhile though. I've not finished it yet, but I definitely will shortly. Its not in the categories you're looking for, but its probably the best WWI game ever made at this point.

Neither RTS nor FPS but Ageod just released a new WW1 Game.

Steam and Iron is ok if you don't mind the lack of graphics.

HPS Simulations has a monster wargame called france 14

Matrix has warplane orange, not as good as war in the pacific admiral edition but basically based on a just after WW1 what if scenario http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_Plan_Orange

HELLO ALL,

I would recommend VERDUN on steam for sure : game is still in beta, it is a modest FPS about WW1 which deserves success.
It is trench warfare.
Like Red orchestra 2 we can take objectives and we have different classes of soldiers (leader, sniper, heavy gun....).but there are no tanks.

There's sadly not been a whole lot of WW1 games worth playing. I've heard that AGEOD made a pretty good one simply called World War One, though I've not played it. It's a TBS.
Commander: The Great War also looks pretty good. Not played that one either. It's a TBS though.
As for RTSs, there's always World War 1, a game that uses the Blitzkrieg engine. It's not amazing, but it works.

Ageod games are very good, the initial ww1 was riddled by bugs that have since been long corrected and the game is fairly labelled as gold version. The only downside, common to all Ageod games is the turn processing lenght, which can however be accelerated by disabling some IA options. The Ageod engine is also nice for a game of trench warfare.

It seem to have been updated again with the Cantennial edition, though it also would seem like they sold the game to another developer. Don't know if this one is better than WW1 Gold, but it's on steam, for what it's worth.

Turn generation has not been that bad in the AGEOD games that I've played that limits themselves to one part of the world (Birth of America & Rise of Prussia), but Pride of Nations had such long turn generation time that I just could not get into the game.

I love how everyone gives him a lecture on "ww2 is more popular than ww1 and has more gamess" , no shit Sherlocks. I am pretty sure OP and everyones mum is aware of that.

Like coming to a music thread about indie music and everyone would be like "there isn't a lot of good known indie but pop music like 1D is more popular". Jesus

I've pretty much have been playing Verdun since I got it 2 days ago non stop. It's certainly not your standard FPS, I keep finding it alot similar to Insurgency for some reason, that said, I'm having way more fun with Verdun than with Insurgency, it is a great game as far as I'm concerned but it still has some hit registration issues. Also the devs are working on alot more new content along with a few new mechanics like bullet drop, it's certainly worth your time.

It's First Person Avoider game, WWI setup and its very short. But its very interesting, you'll enjoy for sure.

I just remembered two more:
1914: Shells of Fury, though it's not exactly what you were asking for. It is a submarine simulator.
Darkest Hour also deals with WW1, at least in part. I never found the WW1 part very fun, but at least it's there.
