A coupon for RailWorks? That would be a saving of about 500$.
Who would give the coupons to begin with? If I'd get a game by X-company would they give me a coupon for some of their other products?
Also how would this be implemented in the site?

Also came here to say this. What's wrong with just having the sale price? Especially if coupons are automatically applied? Are there that many middle aged moms here that calling them 'coupons' instead of 'sales' makes it seem more prestigious and exclusive?
I hope this isn't to replace their already awesome holiday sales. Making coupons exclusive to certain people rather than a sale for everyone. Wonder why you'd need an inventory for it, they'd encourage the trade of them? Dunno if I'd welcome this idea.
He has valid and certainly possible theories. Why introduce coupons when you make daily sales, mid-week and weekend sales (all of which require you to get someone to do some sort of work to get the prices and the page updates, etc), unless if you are planning to get rid of or reduce the number of sales you make? Also, as he said, sales are available to everyone, whereas coupons are not, and this, coupled with less sales, means more revenue from those without coupons. The coupons will probably serve as an incentive then; buy a game at full price (since less sales) and get a coupon for x% off your next game from the publisher. The savings possible from pre-orders and new releases will be huge, and also promote more sales.
Steam knows very well that sales are one of the key reasons people use and are enticed to use the service so it's unlikely that they will replace the sales. I can see why coupons are a good idea, on top of the regular sales. The most obvious one is to encourage consumers to purchase other games that the publisher has created. At the moment, the only way to encourage consumers to buy more from one publisher/developer appears to be the packs that go on sale during regular deals (as in not a big sale), which can be quite limiting as they don't offer much flexiblity for consumers (not much incentive to buy). Steam benefits from more sales anyway so having coupons is both beneficial to the consumer and to the publishers.
There are a lot of different ways they could use coupons.
1.) They could be manufacturers coupons. Like when EA had Batman Arkham City for $24.99 during their Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. They could relay the saving on to Steam customers via a coupon.
2.) They could use coupons for targeted marketing. They could send out coupons to people based on games that are on their wishlists so those people are more inclined to buy the game. For me personally it seems like more that half the daily deals I already own. When ever I see a daily deal that is on my wishlist I buy it. If Steam sent me coupons for games on my wishlist and gave me savings comparable to the Daily Deals I would end up buying a lot more games.
I can see people adding like every game to there favorites though...exploiting it a bit.
That is a great point. They could set a limit on the number of coupons redeemed within a time frame. I am just tossing out ideas off the top of my head because I really, really, really want some coupons like that :)
I have 100+ games on my wishlist, I just put stuff I'm interested on. It helps me to see what all is on sale during big sales when not all items with reduced prices are listed on front page.
I painfully just thought of this... What if we are rewarded coupons by playing certain games and getting some sort of achievement inside them, kind of what they did with the potato thing...?
Honestly I'd hate this, but it would boost sales and definetly please those game collectors out there!

I think it is going to become like origin store- less sales but more coupons, hence why moving to the coupons structure...

It's a good idea but I don't really like it a lot.
