Game called STAINED (Not sure why IGN made an article about it. They never did for games with the same situation. Slow news day I guess.)

Shit like this is why I don't buy greenlight bundles and +1 to the free greenlight key things(Though I have other reasons for that too.)

Sure it doesn't happen very often but these past couple months, it seems to be happening more than it used to.

Love this quote.

"If you really love this game you should consider buying it on steam else I think you already had your share of enjoyment when you purchased the game via IR-Bundle for 50 cents."

WHY AREN'T YOU GIVING US MORE MONEY?! GREEDY BASTARDS!

From steam page.

"Update 1>>>>>
That was really fast. Just got a message from IR representative.
There hopefully is a way around it

Update 2
Just got an email from the IR representative, they are going to update the accounts directly in their system, and begin distributing the keys. I don't have exact ETA on this but they said it will be soon.

So there won't be any change for those who already got the keys and installed the game in steam. For others the key will appear on their IR page soon. Please be patient.

I appreciate all helpful suggestions.

Geez, just another reason to go back in time and stop Greenlight from happening. Quoting a comment from IGN: "There is no hope for our game, let me make sure people know I'm a douche though..."

And, WHY would they put it in such a bundle if they didn't know wether it was going to sell well or not?

they should be baned from steam forever for making promises just to get greenlight

to be super fair. . . devs need more then 50C a copy to keep afloat. I mean then again they shouldn't have put their game in a greenlight bundle. . I mean generating keys don't cost them more and the customers can play the game already. . .but the need to own a steam copy for most is really important. . . I uno.

To be fair before IGN said anything no one really cared.

goes for both sides. . .
as they said
"Stained has got only 300+ votes over the 2 week of the bundle launch. The was very poor response compared to what we had expected. Also average number sold for any bundle was 10k and for us it was only 3500 units. Considering this poor response we got from debut bundle (which was suppose to get us greenlighted) we don't see it has contributed at all in getting us on steam."

AKA people didn't vote for it on the green light To be a devils advocate buying the greenlight and voting for it are two parts of the way the indie royale works. . . Both sides aren't holding up the contract. By Steam's account only 300 people gave a shit till now.

The rest are using this as a "OMG the world is crashing down cause I'm getting ripped off because I have a game I can't play on steam"

EDit I own The Debut Bundle 3 . . . there are many games where the game has been greenlit and the devs are just not saying anything. I give props to the Dev who say hey we messed up over the we are just gonna keep quiet and let them forget.

I uno honesty holds good in my books. I mean it's not like they are saying screw you. They are saying look this is where we are and why.

Did you say yes to them being greenlit. I mean it wasn't even a greenlit bundle. They said they'd give free keys if they got green lit. Out of the 10 k who bought the bundle only around 300 saw the post about the free key. . .

I should be pissed I bought the bundle and said yes. It seems only a few of us aren't going crazy over paying 50c for a non steam game. If a person promises something to me but can't pull through and they are honest about it. . I listen.

Only a true asshole says fuck you to someone being honest. That's what these Devs did they were honest to the public and people are looking for their torches. Cauz Internet. Read what they said and their reasons I'm pretty OK with their reasoning. It's not like they just don't want to.

anyway if you don't agree fine. . you still have their game. Be happy you only paid 50c for it and don't support them anymore.

People aren't saying fuck you. People are saying "I want the key I was promised by you." There is a difference lol. He is being honest but his reason for not giving out the keys is not nearly good enough. He is saying: You paid for product A+B but you will only get product B if C happens but I won't tell you about that. We didn't agree to get the key if the game sold well and being honest eventually is not the same as just being honest. If he truly wanted to only give out keys if the game did well then he should have stated that instead of asking us to pay again for a product that we should have already gotten. If you bought two bundled magazine subscriptions and they only decided to send you one and told you that you had to pay again to get the other one would that be acceptable? I think not. So why should it be acceptable here? You can be empathetic to him all you want, hell I am empathetic to him to, but that doesn't make what he did okay.

true but still people are over reacting. Really only the people who read the post and actively bought it for that reason should be blowing up is my point.

If people saw the post then they have a right to bitch. I'm guessing that's around 500 people tops.

My main point this is more a case of some people finding out about the promise because the dev said something.

Well I can agree with that but that is the internet for you. And that is a very common moral question. Is it better to tell the truth even if it makes people upset? Just like any philosophical dilemma there is really no right answer. A Kantian would say yes and a Utilitarian would probably say no and a hundred other people would have a hundred different answers. So I guess the short answer is that who knows! Lol. But we do know that you believe his decision was right and I believe it to be wrong and that is about all we can know :P but thanks for the fun little debate.

I guess at the bottom line this just proves how broken the whole Greenlight thing is, and how Steam is warping things on the PC gaming marker:
Developers feel the need (rightfully or not) to bribe people with free steam keys to come out on top of a popularity context, and yet there's nothing holding them accountable for not keeping up with the promises they make.

That just sets up lose-lose scenarios: Devs lose out because they're not actually selling, customers don't get what they were promised).

But going back on a promise you made is something you should just not do, as it'll taint your reputation for a very long time. Drom what little I know, getting the keys is costly but not expensive enough to ruin your business as a developer, where in today's environment getting a bad rep is enough to put you out of business half of the time - more if you're a startup indie.

"The whole idea of participating in the indie royale debut bundle was to get us green lighted." from http://steamcommunity.com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/92920386/846958223146404843/, now when they're "Green lighted" thanks to these ppl who spend their money on them and voted for their game, they can say, "thanks for helping, and...fuck you!!". Good I didn't bought their game, and things will go worse.

"we are poor and don't like giving you keys" is not a reason, they don't lose money, seems this devs "expect" to much, they expected more votes and more contribution to that Indie Royale Bundle, but not happened, now they expect selling a lot of copies of their game on Steam and not giving keys to ppl who they promised because they feel to much confident in them selves, but what gonna happen is they won't sell a lot of copies on Steam, they will just make ppl angry.

If they think people will buy the game full price on Steam when they should receive the key they are supposed to have... the game is not selling now, this won't get better with a shitstorm like that.

Well, maybe this game didn't do so well for them but it's crap like this that'll make sure their next game won't do very well either. If you're a small indie studio and your only other game has a story like this attached to it then you're gonna get more hate than Phil Fish.

The reason why the game is not doing well is simple, people don't even know it exists. I think it was the developers of Dustforce that talked about the value of bundles & how it helps a game get more attention, which in turn results in sales. A bunch of people buys the bundle and starts playing the game. Other people notice that those people are playing the game or those people talk about the game with their friends, who in turn take a look at the game, and if it looks like something that they would enjoy, they might end up buying it. The developers of Stained just decided to ignore this advice and instead land themselves in the no attention land. The only people who really care about this story are the ones who bought the bundle, the rest won't really take notice and the annoyed people who don't get the game that they were promised tell their friends to not buy the game.

this games (shitty games) are flooding on steam since greenlight. a lot of ppl vote to win the free key for a (bad)game that they will never play, only for filling their library. it came to a point that only vote to win games will be on top list of greenlight and good games that really need support will never enter on steam...

Greenlight is a bright idea on paper. Gamers choosing games they want to buy on Steam from low profile indie devs. In reality it's a totally messed up way to get games on Steam and the bundle 'exploits' are the worst. Make a greenlight bundle and be more or less sure that enough people will pay the low price to gamble for Steam keys. Don't get your key? Well, in this case the dev knows the game is pants and won't sell, so screw reputation and just piss everyone of hoping for those 10-15 people that will fork out 10$ because they didn't get their bundle key. The other way around would be the way to go really. Forking out those 1k+ keys to get some mouth-to-mouth promotion and THEN sell a few more copies at full price. But yeah, devs aren't marketing guys and they make all the wrong decisions once things don't go all sparkly Ferrari-in-the-garage-after-a-week.

tl;dr: Idiotic way to handle things and those devs lost more than they gained by not handing out the free keys.

Maybe I should just chip in and say that it actually costs nothing for developers to provide keys for their greenlit games, a promise is a promise, but oh well, I would rather pay for an actual game that is good rather then getting crap from indie games in greenlight most of the time

i've bought every one of indie royale's debut bundles. i completely ignore them until they get greenlit and i get a key to add to steam, at which point they end up on the backlog with everything else, to be played eventually.

so no, i didn't have my share of enjoyment, and most of the debut bundle participants would never have even seen 50 cents from me if they hadn't been in a bundle. i'm almost expecting them to wait a few days and say "okay we hear you guys -- free keys as promised for everyone who already bought the game" because i've seen it enough times now. it almost seems like a good pr move

Why is this a conversation that occurs in the modern gaming community?

Further, what do they even have to lose from this? If the numbers in the article are to be believed, they are already essentially bankrupted. Everyone who is screaming about refusing to buy their game already had no intention of buying their game.

Although of course I want keys, I should point out one reason why many devs do this:

There are a lot of people out there that buy up bundles and then resell the keys (or distribute them in some other way to make a profit, eg. Tremorgames.) These actually do hurt sales, because those keys go to people who don't have the game at all.

Not that I'm saying that that justifies it, but it's a real concern -- they're going to inevitably be distributing hundreds of keys to sites like Tremorgames, which will proceed to use them to directly compete with their own sales.
