inb4 people making fun of achievements and remembering the "good old days"

This is also my stance, there are plenty of excellent games with no achievements at all. Whilst I do enjoy collecting & completing card sets, I've never bought a game for access to achievements or cards. Nor have I, like some, left a game running to collect cards - cards are something fun to fiddle with on the side.
Each to their own, however - anything that makes a game more enjoyable for you (and does not hurt others) is a good thing <3

+1, I was going to post something very similar. I don't buy a game for achievements and I won't buy one that doesn't have them or some of them are unattainable. They give replayability for me, before achievements I wouldn't bother finishing a game on harder difficulties or bother looking for collectibles, I still don't unless I enjoy the game.

AMEN!utterly tedious work with no real incentive, other than splashy popup showing coupla lines of text and a pic. . .and sometimes, maybe even a sound(depending which platform you're on).but in all seriousness tho, there's no real value in grindy cheevos, except masochism and, sadism ofc(coming from devs that just felt like molesting ppl's brainz).it's an action that constantly picks at your mind, looping everlastingly. . .i tend to just not bother with those-there's nothing fun in repetitive acts,at least for me.

There is one that I know of, http://store.steampowered.com/app/272990/
Don't fill the Gauge!
This achievement is here to prevent you from filling achievement gauge to 100%... and die. You can't unlock it.

Van Helsing II has one too, although technically it was achievable for a period and not flat-out impossible - i think it was for playing the game during beta, can't remember exactly

Garry's Mod - Play with Garry on the same server. Quite impossible, if he is not playing the game anymore...

Using that logic why play games at all, you don't need to play the game or buy the game and you don't get anything out of playing it. How is unlocking achievements any different from finishing a game or unlocking a weapon or ability in a game?

worst achivement is the one in aoe 2 hd for preordering the game

Achievements that are impossible to get like "be a beta tester" after the game has launched, or are nearly impossible to get like "play a game with a dev" annoy me but won't make me not get a game I want. They certainly aren't an incentive to get a game I'm on the fence about though.
Comment has been collapsed.
Exactly. It's ok if people like achievements, but not geting a good gamer because it has some unachievable ones is absurd

Hm, for me achievements are more important then they probably should be. I tend to play the games I purchase a lot and I'm also kind of a cheapskate. Therefore if I'm buying a new game I'm looking especially for games which have achievements although in rare cases I also buy some without (I think the last one was Cherry Tree High Comedy Club, not sure). There are also some games which I probably would buy if the had achievements (like Neoscavenger or Our darker purpose, which are probably great games even without achievements). So, yea all in all I like achievements and try always to get as much as possible without cheating (also dislike people who use SAM to unlock them although it is stupid and there is no harm). But I have no problem if I can't get 100 % of them since I can admit if something is outside my skill level ....
And yes there are impossible achievements: "Curse Broken" from Cave Story+ is (funnily enough) broken. In the code there is no trigger for the achievement so it is impossible. And there are also achievements which are literally impossible without massive cheating like "The Manhattan Project" from No More Room in Hell which needs 1619000 killed zombies and even with grinding (and no cheating) I don't think you can't kill more then 500 zombies per hour. So do the math, it takes a long time. Also I have my doubts if there really exists people which succesfully completed "Harder as Obsidian" from Giana Sisters. If yes I admire there skill level and there unlimited patience. Also a lot of time achievements which have only be obtainable for a specific time. But I can live with unobtainable, broken and timed achievements although it may influence me if they make up more then 10 % of all achievements.
Hm, too much text so TL;DR: Like achievements, there are unobtainable
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll go one step further, not only will broken/impossible to obtain achievements impact how interested I am in a game... very, very difficult achievements (see "Madman" in The Witcher 2 or "The Shadows Rushed Me" in Max Payne 3) will as well.
Why? Because I don't have a ton of time to play games these days (an hour or two after work if I'm lucky, a bit more on a lazy weekend maybe), and I have a metric ton of games that still need a playthrough. With this kind of oversaturation, making achievements the determining factor in what I decide to play doesn't seem terribly unreasonable. Why purchase/play a very good game WITHOUT achievements... or a game where I know I'll never get 100% due to lack of ability or time constraints... when I already have twenty games that are just as good, if not better, WITH achievements that I probably should be playing?
Comment has been collapsed.
Achievements are a cheeky grab at "replayability" without actually adding anything to the game. I've never played or replayed a moment of gaming attempting to get an achievement. It's merely an, "oh, how about that" surprise that pops up every once in awhile.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just out of curiosity, wouldn't it be better/more fun to get more time and value out of your games, even if it's just for achievements? Considering that "replaying" means you already own the game, and the developers already have your money... so the only person with anything to gain from it, is you.
Or do you have too much "pride" to "fall for it"?
Comment has been collapsed.
Believe it or not, there are people that don't like to replay a game once it's over. The only game I have ever gone back to get a couple of achievements was Skyrim, and that was only because by the time I finished the game I was only missing 3 or 4 so I figured I might as well.
In my case, I get really bored really quickly if I try to play a game through a second time (most games I have a hard time staying interested enough even through the first time). The only exceptions to this for me are strategy games and shmups. But then because those are the exceptions, I tend to put those off until the end of my "to play" list and play those between the times I get the anticipated games with plots and story.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'm not saying you HAVE to replay your games. If you're one and done, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. You can even hate achievements, though I think that's unnecessary... since you can easily ignore them and enjoy your game all the same.
However, based on his post... this sounds more like doctorofjournalism does replay his games, he just will never do it for an achievement. Which sounds like some BS idea based on principle he put together. Another phony "cause" he, and many other internet white knights, feels compelled to take up because he's bored and wants to "save the gaming industry" from things like achievements and "cheeky grabs at replayability without actually adding anything to the game".
Fight the power doctorofjournalism. Don't buy in to what those corporate fatcats sell you. Let me guess, Early Access is the worst thing to ever happen to gaming? Mainsteam games are too linear? Too "generic" or "cookie cutter"? Those are a few other popular ones.

I'm not sure what weird baggage you're trying to clump on about here, but there's really nothing for substance or "justice" in my post. I simply meant that achievements are background for me and aren't an inspiration to replay games. Of course I replay games that I enjoy, it's just never really been for an achievement. Use of this as motivation usually feels transparent and I haven't ever found myself interested on either console or pc.
This is only an opinion (on a forum about videogames) and definitely not a "crusade" so I don't know what you're so butthurt about. There's nothing wrong with wanting to get achievements for yourself, why would that matter to me?
Comment has been collapsed.
If your post weren't an attempt to describe the industries "cheeky" doings (a cute way of saying that they're pulling a fast one on us and a cuter way of implying some of us are stupid enough to fall for it), and emphasized that you wouldn't waste "a moment" on an achievement... I'd believe there wasn't something more behind it.
You have no idea how many people vehemently share this opinion of yours.
Comment has been collapsed.
Heh, I guess not. But, I'm starting to understand how many people vapidly inject their own prerogatives into other people's personal opinions.

There are some good achievements... and of course there are many bad achievements...
And then, there're the achievements from Watch_Dogs. "Social Lubricant" is just the peak of the iceberg.

+1 why is that name so goddamn brilliant. Also there's a sexual Tyrannosaurus in this pervy film. ...i'm being serious. It's NSFW.

But achievements are not the most important. The game itself is the most important. And that's coming from a fan of cheevos ;P
Comment has been collapsed.
People have preferences though.
It's okay to not purchase a game because you don't like first person shooters... right? Or better yet, maybe you like FPS's, but you don't like shooters that allow you to carry more than one or two guns at a time or have regenerating shields? Maybe you find those features unrealistic, or distracting.
Why is it any different to not purchase a game because it lacks a feature you enjoy, like achievements? Especially when there are TONS of games out there that do?
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, you're free to do what you want. I'm just stating my opinion.
Comment has been collapsed.
What you said, "some people like FPS games, some other genres" is about genres. I don't think it can be compared. But I guess you're right that some people may play games just to get achievements although I don't understand it. It's the same that some people play only some games to get high scores (mostly arcade ones), some play MP games just to play with others and so on. So, yeah, you're right. To me though the game itself is the most important but I love collecting achievements as well. If you go to my Steam profile you'll see a proof of that ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not necessarily just genre's though. I also mentioned certain features of the genre that people might not like (regenerating shields, two weapon limit, etc) that could influence their purchasing decisions. Achievements are a feature, a feature some games don't offer.
Comment has been collapsed.
Just look at achievements as some extra reason you would wanna play that game after you finished it.

I get some don't find achievements entertaining and all, but why are some people so... hysteric about them?
Some people are like "Oh noes, a chevo, take it off, take it off!".
One thing is disliking them and another thing is actively pursuing their removal from the game so none can enjoy them :/
Comment has been collapsed.
I just think of achievements as icing on the cake. Sure, it's wonderful to get them, but no one's going to lose sleep over them...probably.

Ever feel a sense of accomplishment for beating a game? Guess what... it was just as meaningless as the achievements you hate so much. You aren't developing rad skills or moving up in life. Video games are about fun. Beating games is fun. Playing with friends is fun. Some people find collecting achievements fun. Why such a shitty attitude?
Comment has been collapsed.
"Achievements aren't really for me, when I play games I usually don't go for them. To each their own though, I used to collect them, so I understand the appeal, but I guess I grew out of it." <- Wholesome Attitude
"Hey achievement hunters, get a load of this. You know those things you like collecting? Guess what... even if you collect them all, you're still a loser. You might think you're accomplishing something, but nope. It's just a game. You aren't doing anything valuable, moving up in life or developing some rad skills. Not like me. I used to be like that, but hey, I guess I'm just better than you. Sorry." <- Shitty Attitude
Which one is closer to you, hmm? Yeah, no. You're a peach. Truly a man of the people.

You're an asshole for acting like an asshole, not for disagreeing with me (please refer to my examples above). I mean, I don't really have a ton to work with here. All I know about you is what you posted... a few sentences... which seems to indicate that you're an asshole, and you don't waste any time getting there.
Comment has been collapsed.
No... you can become an asshole for assuming that people who still enjoy them are incorrect in their interpretations of the value of achievements. That they're wrong, and that it's your prerogative to teach them how it's "supposed to be". "You aren't actually achieving anything. Realise that and just enjoy the game."
Especially considering the virtual images we unlock are about as "real" as every digital game you've ever beaten.
Though I'm going to go out on a limb and say you STILL don't understand what I'm trying to spoonfeed you here. So I'm done. Enjoy the little bubble you live in, kid.
Comment has been collapsed.
So you agree that you sounded like an asshole? I accept your apology, but a friendly word of advice: avoid speaking publicly in English, if you can. The same way I avoid making an ass of myself on German or Spanish discussion boards... because I guarantee I could if I tried.

"they didn’t mean to come off as a jerk"
So if you didn't sound like an asshole, did you sound like a jerk? And I probably won't take your posts seriously anymore... apparently you can barely speak English and don't actually realize what you're typing. So what's the point... lol
Comment has been collapsed.
Then I don't understand your post about the language barrier, because that line I quoted seems to indicate that you feel you accidentally misrepresented yourself as a jerk. Which means you were a jerk, you just didn't mean to be.
And I just realized I'm arguing with some teenager from the other side of the world on a gaming forum. FML (though it's amazing technology has given us this opportunity, no?)
Comment has been collapsed.
I really don't care about achievements. Sure, it's fun to get a few here and there, but at the end? I just play the game and forget about these useless achievements.
Comment has been collapsed.
Useless is not a bit harsh at all.
To me, they have absolutely no value, thus I consider them useless. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that they shouldn't exist. If someone enjoys hunting achievements, well fine, if it's what makes it fun for him. I'm speaking personally here, that I don't find any interests in achievements.

I noticed that I sometimes get discouraged from acquiring a mediocre game if it has many unachievable achievements. This way I recently resigned from getting Orion Prelude or Toy Soldiers. If a game is of a low/medium quality I get the missing fun/satisfaction from getting all/most of the achievements. What about you?
