I don't use a case for my samsung note 3, the colour at the side actually got chipped off a bit by a previous case -.- I seldom drop my phone although I do manhandle it, so some hairline scratches. No case is the best :D

My smartphone is Nokia 5230 and it has some small scratches on the back and some really small ones on my screen, but it doesn't bother me. I'll probably get Nexus 5 and I don't want some otterbox-like thing for it. If I'll buy something for it, then it would be a slim silicon/plastic backcover :)

It's like insurance. Just in case you drop it or roughly handle it.

I have set my sights on the I-Droid(IIRC?) skin from MGS: Ground Zeroes.
But it kinda looks like a detonator and seems a bit heavy/clunky.

You should get a business suit case, so it would be a smartphone..

My Nokia 5800 and my SE k750i don''t have any protection. they have been dropped, hit, smacked and whatnot. They still work in perfect condition as they were bought. Yes, there are a fell scuffs, but no dents or anyting brutal. Just surface wounds :D Today I don''t see any modern phone survivng without a protector. Just my 2 cents.

True dat, I had gone through 3 tablets, no case on all of them; and every single one cracked. With the last one it was caseless and I dropped it 2 FUCKING FEET, and the damn screen shattered, the screen was distorted and the touches wouldn't respond; that was the last time I went case-less.

absolutely no..... you dont even need screen protectors for most of today smartphones....
i had bought 2 xpera z3C`s since launch both of them are working without any scratches or something one of them had some drops too but both are in the best shape.....(there are other phones which are fine without case but z3c front and back panels are made of glass so thay have a higher chance of getting F*cked)..............

I use something like this silicone case for samsung s4. The screen will not scratch but the back will so this is good enough.
Mine is transparent so it's like is not even a case :D

Yes, I have a semi-rigid case (no silicone, not plastic). It's super nice on touch, and has saved my phone from several drops. One of them at the disco :/
Also a matte screen protector. Great viewing on outsides (also on insides with lights on your back), great touch, no fingerprints, oleo-phobic.
Also funny people think screens are indestructible just because they don't scratch with metal... kids these days. They will EASILY scratch with a grain of sand in your pocket. Just because Glass (7-9) resists most metals (4-7) doesn't mean it will resist common sand (8-10).
But I'd say it depends on the money you have. if you have to keep your phone 2-3 years (like me) then you need them, but I have friends who change phone every time they want, so they don't need any protection, if it breaks or something they just buy a new one.

Same, only get a new phone every 3-4 years, so I just ended up buying an otterbox defender today because I bought my phone off-contract (which is really expensive by the way), so if I crack or break it, im pretty much fucked.
Edit: Oh yea by the way, I was able to get it at a sale for $20 rather than $60.

Are you using Moh's scale of minerals hardness? or some other scale? o.O

My old battery died so I upgraded it to a 7000mAh extended battery. I felt that I absolutely needed a case after that since the one that originally came with the phone wouldn't fit anymore. :D

heh...
I read that title as "Do you need a case of Smartass?"
"No, thanks, I'm already stricken with that disease."
I'm tired. That's my excuse. )

Just in "case", get it? get it?
I had my HTC drop 3 feet from my pocket when I'm sitting, and the screen cracked. So right now, I'm buying those metal covers with screws as bumpers and never had a problem again. A 20$ case is always better than having to fix your phone for 50$.

I feel like it's a necessity if you are planning to resell it, cracks, dings, and scratches can decrease the resale value significantly; plus on some cheaper devices, once the screen is cracked, the screen dosen't even work anymore.
But I can understand not having one too, phone designers takes months-years designing the phone perfectly; while case manufacturers just take a couple days to a week making a case. A case just really takes away all of the designers work and throws it in the trash. If you have a small contract like a 6 month contract (yes, thats actually a real thing), then it makes sense, if you break your phone, just get a new one after 6 months.
