So, Kootra was streaming some CS:GO on Wednesday, and suddenly a bunch of police officers with assault rifles come in and tell him to get down on the ground. Apparently someone thought that it would be funny to call 911 and tell that there is someone shooting people and taking hostages in the office building that the Creatures use.

Some people recorded it and posted it on Youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz8yLIOb2pU

It also got on the news.
http://www.dailydot.com/esports/swatting-the-creatures-kootra/

It's not just Kootra and streamers, a lot of other people have gotten swatted, pretty much anyone can be swatted.
What do you think? Why do people do this? And could these trolls scare away some streamers? I think it's incredibly stupid, some guy thinks that it's hilarious to send cops to deal with some non-existent shooter or bomber, making them evacuate schools, stop traffic and ruin everyones normal day.

The person who did is, highprobably a kid. He'll get caught in the next days.

Proxies make it harder, not impossible. Also, you can't just use a free proxy for skype like you can for unblocking youtube. It's a little more complicated. They just won't use the resources on "cyber stuff for kids these days".

Permalink

Proxies... Proxies only are a good defense against kids who want to script or try to hack. But against a professional, expert or just a 30 year old basement nerd, it's easy to trace it. If someone from the NSA would read your comment they would reply in themselves: "Oh, that poor guy has no clue"

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Proxies? Please. Calling a landline number with Skype requires funds, hence, a Skype account.
So Skype can just check the phone number and time and trace it back to the account holder.
The only way around this is if some used a stolen credit card, pre paid debit card or a phished Paypal account.
Proxies alone does nothing.

What the fuck Milan.. They actually are a bunch of nerds playing videogames for money... Do you know how many MILLIONS they receive from Twitch ALONE each year? They play games 24/7 all their live, receiving money from twitch and their fanboys who uses their parents creditcards (because adults don't watch streams, it's rediculous to watch somebody else game, worst freetime spending). Somebody who has a job does not waste his free time watching somebody you don't know, play games. It's not because some streaming buddies rented a office to game together, that it became a business, for that you need a "value added tax identification number" wich they do not have, as they don't SELL products or RENT a service. They just play games.

This is disgraceful. You can see he's shitting himself, even though he knows he has done nothing and that someone "swatted" him. Yet he doesn't know what to do, he's afraid to move. He's afraid of the people who are supposed to protect him.

And how would you suggest the police handle the situation, not knowing if it's real or not?

They have to take control of the situation quickly in order to avoid harm coming to themselves and to the civilians in the area. Until the area is cleared and shown to be safe there was no telling what was going on. Assuming that a certain person is not a threat is exactly what has gotten a lot of people killed over the years.

People have been calling in fake bomb threats and shit like this since your parents were in school. This isn't new, this has nothing to do with 9/11 or the USA.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not the pranks, the "no knock raids" SWAT teams conduct with next to zero evidence, resulting in a major number of "collateral casualties" for the war on drugs by simply gunning down whatever resident may be unfortunate enough to be home. Also, does the Canadian Police empty a clip on any suspect that isn't literally frozen?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Police usually don't look for evidence until the threat is removed. If they get a call saying that a person shot two people and is armed, they need to go in an make sure all is safe before gathering evidence.

The guy wasn't arrested, he was only subdued and the police relaxed quite a bit once they saw him to be no threat. The sat him back in a chair and were talking normally. They have to go in "full force" like they did just in case the call they got was right.

Stupid, expensive, DANGEROUS, and immature bs. There is nothing funny about it, and those that think it is show how immature they are. That shit cost thousands of tax payer dollars and wastes the time and resources of people who are meant to be there to serve and protect citizens. Dangerous because I have seen enough swat shit through news and stuff to know that a lot of those guys can be high strung when they are out there and all it takes is one small misunderstanding between them and an innocent bystander in the swatted home/office and shit can hit the fan. It gets VERY bad, if there is actually some wanted at the time being hunted and they end up thinking that person is in that place. Innocent people's lives get ruined. I have seen that happen. Few yrs ago, there was a guy who was targetting the police, so all the local cops were wound tight and any calls they got, they were edgy as fuck. One innocent family, who was linked to the guy because he was distant family, got their home swatted, teargassed and pepper sprayed to the point it was not livable and all their things were ruined and the city refused to fix it. I am not sure what happened but last I heard was months later and they were still fighting the city to cover getting the place fixed (it was boarded up and unlivable). While that wasn't part of a swatting prank, it is just an example of how tightly wound police forces can be if things are already stressful and innocent people end up getting fucked over. Have some idiot do a prank swatting during a similar situation, or even just someone on the swat team tightly wound that day, and that makes for a very dangerous situation. Swat team already has a stressful fucking job. Not to mention how scarring and horrifying it must be to anyone it happens to; that shit must be traumatic as fuck, minding your own business, done nothing wrong, when suddenly your house or work place is stormed by armored and armed cops screaming at you, pointing a live, deadly weapon straight into your face.

Permalink

Yeah >_< Situations like that can turn bad quickly because one or two little misunderstandings. And dogs, most are chill but if they are startled or see their family being "attacked" they will try to protect them. Then you end up with kids not only traumatized by have guns in their face for no reason, watching mom and dad being treated as criminals for no reason, they then get to see/hear their best friend getting harmed/killed. And when you're a kid, that shit, ALL that shit, is far more damaging mentally than it is for adults.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really new, because it has been happening to celebrities for many yrs now. Sometimes they are home or sometimes their house happens to be empty since they are away. It makes the news from time to time, esp if someone was home at the time. The internet being as big is as it is now, compared to yrs ago, has just made it more common and easier to do. As long as there has been swat or some form of it, you can probably find instances of it, but you'd have to do lots digging because lack of internet or even an infant internet when tv and newspaper were still the big news sources, means finding records of some sort (if any exist in form of tv or newspaper for the event).

Using the Special Weapons and Tactics team to harass people playing video games or poker is misuse and illegal use of the police force. It is unfortunate that the police force must respond to every suspicious cry for help with the full force just to be sure.

In Finland, most likely a patrolling police officer pair would have been first on the scene to check the situation. Then they could have estimated the situation and called for assistance. To compare, Finland is as large as Oklahoma and we have a population of 5.4 million and we have circa 45 guns per 100 people (compared to US 97 to 100). We do some hunting and we live right next to good ol' Russia. Old folks might still have some doubts about our neighbour.

What I am trying to point out here is that the second admendment is a real nasty case. Just to keep themselves safe in the US, citizens "must" arm their selves like preparing for a civil war. There is no real threat from either side of the US borders - Canadians are a nice people and the Mexicans seem to be keen on fighting on their own.

Wait - we were talking about video gamers here? Crikey.

Permalink

In my country you have to identify yourself with your complete name address and ID when you denounce anything, even a neighbour doing too much sound. And of course the call and the phone number gets recorded . So these "pranks" would be much harder to do.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So basically they will do nothing if the person calling doesn't tell their name and address? I find that hard to believe.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, that's how a serious country work: impeding a pranker mobilize units, spend thousands of euros and disturbing people. They ask the info and it can be checked meanwhile start mobilizing. They also call-back to confirm the info.
And then if it's a prank there are info to start to find the pranker and give him the nightmare he deserves. If he's using info from someone else could be checked by voice, so that impedes the "back-prank" or "collateral prank". And well Identity supplant is an extra offence.

EDIT: but well, making really hard to have weapons and having a very low rate weapons/civils helps to reduce the amount of people shooting, so that helps a lot.

When your life is in risk, the problem is not to stay annonymous. You have time to say an address and explain the problem and not to say your name and id? Probably the person attending is capable to detect real threads and not jokes.
