At this time a skin variant for Axton.
Most keys add either skin/head extras, or golden keys. Golden keys can be used at Sanctuary in the game to open the Golden Chest - which contains usually over-scaled loot. (at or above your level, usually rare type of great items)

I'm not familiar with the shift codes and haven't played the game a lot.
Is it recommended to redeem all those codes, listed at orcz, as soon as possible, or should some codes only be used with a higher level character?

Borderlands 2 won't launch for me :( after the small menu it just disappears

I've run into something similar, though I don't know if it's the same issue. Usually, just giving it a little time after the splash menu comes up helped for me, though I had always assumed that was due to my use of a tool called x360ce for my controller and it needing just a little extra time to hook into the connection there.
Maybe you could try disabling the Steam Overlay, in case that's interfering with anything. (Right-click the game entry in your Steam library, Properties, uncheck "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game".)
