Why is it that the moderators get to act like children with they're powers and ban people for posting one youtube video when people can go and spam the word "nah" over and over in the half life 2 forums? IS it me or do the community mods for steam act all too much like american cops?

Was the thing you did in the rules? If so then you really can't cry over it. It is there. You were told not to do it. And you did not listen.

Thats the thing. No mod said "hey stop that" He just barged into a thread in the HL2 forums and temp banned me for a video response I linked that had Dr.Evil saying "How about no". That clearly does not violate any rules in the forums. So I called him out on it in the steam community discussions then he deletes an entire page from the "whats the worst thing about steam" thread when my cal;ling him out on this was indeed a valid concern for the rights of steam users the world over.

Violation of the forum rules results in a temporary ban. When you do that, you can expect to be banned.

Well I won't pretend to be an expert on the rules. I don't know how the original act would get you suspsended but that's the reason that I worded my comment the way I did. Just saying that if it is there then it is there and if not then you are right.

Without resorting to a rude answer, I'll let you know that while the behavior of some very particular moderators may seem as childish, it may be against the rules of the forum over there. You're responsible for the YouTube link you post, and if it goes against the forum rules, you are the one who breaks the rule and gets a suspension for not having properly adhered to the rules. In that case, the best thing to be done is to peacefully try to negotiate/contact them and request them politely to lift the ban as <insert defense and reasoning>. If you behave like "WHY U BAN ME I ONLY POST LINK OTHERS POST MORE CRAP UNBAN ME PLSPLSPLS"... well, I'm sure you get it. And this thing happens everywhere, even here. It sounds like you got busted doing something wrong and now you hate all cops. Cops have a hard enough time dealing with shitbags. If anything their hands are tied and they rarely get to exercise any real authority.

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, a lot of cops do abuse their power. My mom worked with law enforcement for a while, and has seen a handful of rotten police. One of them straight-up beat the shit out of a dude solely for defending himself from one of them. He was just assuming a defensive position because he thought the cop was gonna bring out a can of ass-whooping.
And corrupt police officers tried to kill my pops when he was on the force. Poppop had to leave, because his life was in so much danger.

So yeah. Not all cops are bad, but the power that the badge brings lures in a lot of people who do not need to be there.

Thing is, freedom of speech does not mean you have a right to use other people's soapboxes, only that you yourself are allowed to own and use one.

When you are using my soapbox, you have to follow my rules, or step off it.

so i can't say "excuse me sir, but you are lying. what you're telling me is not in my history books neither archives. a lot of your ancestors died in that period, so did mine, but it was not even remotely a genocide. do you even know what that word means? they were your ancestors who played football with my ancestors' heads, and bet on pregnant women's babies' gender, then cut their belly to determine the winner. but it was not a genocide either, no sir. it was rough times. painful times. i hope you're feeling sad and ashamed about what happened just like me. please stop slandering my history and manipulating other people. that's all i ask. not even an apology. if you're expecting an apology from me, sure. i'm deeply sorry for our losses. but it's not an apology for a genocide. because it was not a genocide."? well, then freedom of speech is practically useless isn't it?

Freedom of speech only applies in public. Private entities (Steam forums, for example), don't have to deal with your crap.

i'm not saying you should drop this topic out of nowhere. but as you can see, he was answering to an accusation. if you see it as crap, just ignore it. if you can't ignore and can't stand what others have to say about it, don't accuse a nation or a country with your lack of history knowledge. if you're not the one who is accusing, and also can't ignore and can't stand what others have to say about it, i don't know what to say. anyway, if mods suspend/ban anyone who is talking politics, problem would be solved, wouldn't it? it's in rules so why wouldn't they?
fingers crossed for tyranny in sg.

First of all, I wanted to say that your method of writing is extremely difficult to parse through. Capitalization exists for a reason.

Secondly, I was replying to you, not to the OP. I don't see how "nation or a country" has anything to do with my post since my post has nothing to do with the genocide mentioned by the OP. I mentioned "crap" because usually when people hark "freedom of speech" on a forum, they did something that broke the rules and are complaining about being banned. If you have done nothing of the sort, I apologize. But my point still stands - freedom of speech does not apply to a private setting such as the Steam forums or Steamgifts.

Thirdly, there is no ban on political discussion in the rules. It merely says to "avoid political discussion," which enables bans if a particular discussion devolves into a flame war. Calm discourse is perfectly acceptable in the forums. Here are responses from Rinarin and cg about this subject

I don't want to repeat myself but all I'm saying is if someone tells bogus stuff about your history, you should stand against it. This is freedom of speech. Doesn't matter whether you're in Steam forums or SG forums or whatever. Of course if you start a discussion or create a topic out of nowhere about some controversial politics subject or historical event, it would be absurd. We're on same page on this. I got your point. I hope you understood mine as well. Thanks for this civilized little discussion.

It still hurts? Seriously? The whole thing happened eight months ago, and you received amnesty. Get over it. I get that you've been taught history from a different angle than myself and other Westerners, which means your own country's genocidal actions appear differently to you, but we should keep serious and contentious historical discussion on other websites. I'm sure you understand that now, though. Right?

You're incredibly naive if you think that America is alone in having flawed police officers or even that America's are the worst.

Furthermore, you are not entitled to free speech on Steam's forums, nor the use of Steam's forums, period. Get that clear in your head. Websites are akin to private property, and the owners (and those they entrust to run them) have the right to remove you from the premises.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm well aware that america isn't the only place that has corrupt law enforcement and second it is valves responsibility to make sure that they're community mods don't treat the forums as they're personal playgrounds like they currently do. Also I violated none of steams user agreement when I was wrongfully banned. You can sit here and say that im wrong all day long but in the end the mods arent valve employees and have been abusing they're power for quite some time therefore these "rules" that you speak of very much no longer apply, at least until valve hires professional moderators and gets rid of the community appointed variety

I got pulled over in Latvia, twice, for speeding. Both times, all they did was make me pay a cash fine on the spot and let me go. Didn't ask for a license, didn't check any paperwork, just "give us cash and you can be on your way".

Hey, steam community mods are probably the least worst of mods, but considering that we basically pay for it (through games, inb4 someone comes and tells me that's not true) they (and the support) could be more professional. However you're right, mods act all childish when they're even slightly pissed off.

But, as i said, steam mods are not the worst. I used to hang around in an anime website-forum that basically just releases translated news and users' reviews. every time i pointed out that their news were erroneous or that they copied the translation form others websites (accompanied by proper source), guess what happened.
Ah, and they had a shit-ton of rules that they used to bring out only when they were pissed off. i.e one of the rules was not insult anything or anyone, including manga, anime, bla bla bla. Talk shit bout their favorite anime and be sure to get a ban; the anime they hate gets insulted, no one bats an eye.

"Act like American cops..."

I'm not even American but that was still a childish comment. People aren't perfect, especially volunteer mods who after all "are volunteering". If you had any experience as a mod, you would understand how quick people are to make judgments on the internet. One moment you're helping someone out and the next, you're public enemy number 1. You need to take a step back and accept that there are far more problems with the user base rather than the mods. Sure, they sometimes make bad calls, or overreact, but that only proves that they're human and not some automatic bot sending responses. Valve aren't stupid enough to accept just anyone as a volunteer mod.

the american cop thing isn't supposed to be the most mature thing out there as I live in the US and observe they're corruption every day and honestly, valve has enough money to hire people to write and maintain a bot and a massive server for said mod bot. It would make sense to have that or hired professionals.

There are huge differences between "their", "there", and "they're". "They're" is a contraction of "they are". Does "they are corruption every day" make any sense to you?
