Difference between Sims and Train Simulator: Once you buy TS and any of many DLC, you have it. Bought it when it was Train Simulator 2? It got updated to 2012 for free, and all dlc worked with new engine. Oh, it got updated for free to TS2013 also... Bought Sims 2? Well, nice for you. That's not quite fair though. Train simulators DLC costs are mostly licensing fees. Because they are to-scale fully interior-ed trains, licensed for official use from the train manufacturers. If you're into trains, you buy a few of them. You buy the ones for the trains you know about and love already. You're also in a very expensive hobby, model trains can cost $8k+ from a shop, the DLC for fully detailed trails is a far better deal than that even.
The sims DLC is all made up by EA "designers" so they get all the money. No licensing fees. No real world counterparts that they match 1:1. And no large hobby that they are a million times cheaper than. 'cept maybe doll houses. But that's not quite fair.

That video took 34 min to tell you the obvious: If you don't like EA, then stop throwing money at them. Its simple as that. I personally don't see anything that the guy says in the video as a problem as I don't pay for microtransactions, neither I do for shitty day 1 DLCs (then again, unless they come with a GOTY edition, I don't pay for DLCs), and you can't complain about the always online DRM when it's stated on their EULA. If you bought something and didn't know about the conditions of that product then it your fault, not EA. Don't like the DRM policy? Then don't buy it. But you like the game? Then man up, you either become their little bitch or you stay true to your "NO-DRM" policy and don't buy it anyways. people found out what online DRM can do to a game, Bethesda tried it with Oblivion with there DLC the only problem was if they server was down or you where down and happen to have a game save in the DLC instant crash and you can not play did not take them long to patch it and since have not tried it again

They've not done anything personally cruel to me, besides addict my fiancee to Mass Effect.. Still, the storyline DLCs all add an acceptable amount of content for the price, though of course I would have enjoyed paying less ;) The sports games are of no consequence to me since I'd rather lick the sand off of sandpaper than play any sports game :D
Overall I grudge any company who puts out money-grabber games with floods of overpriced DLC, but I simply X that game off the list (til a free version like that Sims 2 comes along..). Fact is that collecting Sims stuff is highly addictive to a lot of people and they take that angle and twist your wallet's arm with it :> If people would resist, or show a little compulsion control, they'd quit using dlc-bombs as a nice profit tactic, or at least start dropping the prices earlier than normal.

Can't watch yet, but I want to say this.
I actually had to do a bit of business/financial analysis of EA for a university course just a few months back. My findings were actually rather surprising: EA's strategy isn't working well for them. Their growth, revenues and profits are wildly inconsistent, but are trending downwards. They had a change of management but not a change of mindset. They're really as bloated, disconnected from reality, and utterly risk-averse as they appear. When I made my report they hadn't issued dividends for several years, and by my calculations their stock price is grossly inflated.
I don't think their money grubbing is a sign of avarice, but of desperation. Now, I am not an expert nor an oracle, but I really think that if left to their own devices EA will render themselves irrelevant. While the company probably won't just collapse on itself, other companies will be able to rush in and chew up EA's market share and render them obsolete. I already see this happening. EA is constantly playing catch-up to the likes of Activision and Valve. CD Projekt is making better Bioware-style games than Bioware is. The post-release relevance of their major titles in the public consciousness can now be measured in weeks. And consumer awareness of EA's idiocies is growing.
Now if only Ubisoft could follow EA's march to oblivion...

In other news, an analysis I've read a while ago claims the development of AAA titles is in itself a bubble waiting to burst. Game development for AAA titles may cost more than a Hollywood blockbuster, yet it's not as easy to get a return on that investment. Meanwhile, most improvements are focused on graphics, which is why indie games with innovative gameplay can and do make a killing.
I don't really follow the console market, but I seem to recall both Sony and Microsoft were marketing their latest consoles both with a few exclusive AAA titles each and with rather more exclusive indie games.

This was apparent a while ago and will only get worse once the dust settles on some of their contingent liabilities, as they become realized. The worst part is their negative cash flow will eventually catch up to them as well, since they are mostly reliant on their massive amount of cash reserves that they've stockpiled over the years. Negative cash flow and inconsistent nopat equates to bad things in the future.
Frankly, I'm not a huge fan of Activision as well. The main reason why Activision is doing so well compared to EA is the fact that Activision is almost reliant on CoD/Starcraft and spend roughly $600 million less on R&D for expansion and future IP, which diminishes their costs and combined with higher revenue, makes them look far more successful when compared to EA. At least you can argue that EA are trying to be innovative, Activision just shovels the same shit on us and their success is actually detrimental to the industry as a whole.

Just owning the rights to Mass Effect would/should be enough for any company to stay afloat, it would seem like :> People talk about the death of consoles, that digital gaming will destroy them.. But then you'd have to explain why Steam is getting into the console market, if digital gaming is king :> Besides having console-exclusive characters from ages ago, I value my console most of all because anything I buy for it will actually RUN on it.. People also talking about free-to-play and online multiplayer is going to kill single-player.. I'd say, before you rely on that assumption, you should wage war on CAPPED INTERNET SERVICE first, before you go throwing all your financial eggs in that basket :) I don't even touch online games or multiplay because my lovely internet service has me pinging 700 and limited to 10gb data use for the entire month for a household of 8 bandwidth-hungry people.. Console gaming is and always has been about the higher margins and greater profitability. With digital games, even though you've somewhat reduced costs and overhead due to digital distribution, allowing you to cut manufacturing, storage, and shipping, because of the way the current market is, pricing also is significantly different. PC gamers expect their steam games to go on sale, at higher discounts, far more rapidly than their console counterparts. It's why you see older games like those that were in the Humble 2K bundle and Humble SE bundle still being sold at physical locations at a higher price. There are no bundles to speak for consoles and that only helps the bottom line. There's just simply less risk period I imagine, at least for bigger budget games.
Likewise, although consoles do have the used game market to compete with, unlike digital games, they've mitigated the impact of that by releasing items like an online pass "free" for new games and forcing those who buy used to buy an online pass if they wish to play online multi-player.
Similarly, because of the structure of regional pricing, without using locks that are unpopular, publishers also have to live with significantly lower prices from likely a growing chunk of consumers. While I doubt that the percentages for that chunk of sales would ever surpass 10%, considering the massive pricing differences, sometimes around a 50% lower price, that still is a hefty chunk of change that publishers have to consider when doing their cost benefit analysis.
Finally, there's the piracy element to consider. While it is very possible to jailbreak and mod your consoles to play pirated games, it's nowhere near as convenient or risk free as it is for PC. Most console gamers likely don't participate in piracy for console games, even if they might know that it's possible. While it is disingenuous for publishers to claim that piracy equates to a 1:1 lost sale, there is no denying that piracy does impact sales at a material level, since there are quite a few individuals, as denoted in some of our SG threads, that are unrepentant about pirating and not buying the game after they've beaten it. Apply that on a much larger scale and you have a fairly significant figure that impacts the decision making process.

Pretty much all companies do this, they'll organize an event for charity and slap their name on it. Something like the "Telus Walk to Cure Diabetes"; sure it has their name on it but the event is all for a good cause. Ubisoft have crappy DRM Uplay, they force it to use even on Steam. They make terrible ports that have terrible optimization. They lie to people and try to hide stuff from people(Watch Dogs).
EA also does have DRM Origin, but it's much better than Uplay. EA support is even better than Steam support IMO. They do give out free games on Origin more often than Steam actually. Yeah they do have pricey DLC and shitton of them, but some of them are worth the price like Battlefield premium, there is a shitton of content there. Also they had crappy launch with BF4, but at least they are still fixing it and even delayed BF4 expansion packs to fix BF4.

And you must use their crappy Uplay even if it's already on one DRM or else you can't play them.
Valve has its own DRM - Steam, their games are only on Steam. Same with EA since now they have Origin their games are Origin exclusive. I see no problem with that, but for sure it would be nice to have new EA games on Steam and also they would probably sell better because there are a lot of haters that don't even want to download Origin. Origin is fine, a lot better than Uplay.

Honestly if I was a dev I would be more likely to not release my game on Steam if I had my own client like Origin(Which works fine btw people). Reason is I would not want 30% of profits going to Valve....makes 0 sense to me if I had the headway to avoid it like EA.

I was open to hearing this faceless British man on YouTube until he says, as if it were self-evident truth, "Oh nooo, EA isn't evil, not when truly evil, human-killing companies like Wal-Mart and PayPal exist!" Perhaps both of these ubiquitous companies are evil, but making the blanket statement that they are and not providing explanation reeks of submission to common cynical thought without actual research and evidence, which makes the entire video suspect for me.
Note #1: If you interpret this as an endorsement of either PayPal or Wal-Mart, feel free to try to convince me they're awful companies. They probably are.
Note #2: EA behaves like a corporation, just as every other AAA publisher does. If you're gonna hate them, hate the video game industry as a whole and play true indie games only.
Note #3: This man seems not to know the technical definition of "shovelware". Highly-expensive-to-produce annual or endlessly sequeled games aren't shovelware. Money is pumped into their development which is handled by hundreds of hardworking individuals, and oftentimes good games are produced from that. The Sims 3, regardless of how this guy seems to think it's both shovelware and a blight upon game quality, is a fun, well-made game (though all the micro and macrotransactions try to convince you otherwise) with marked improvements over its predecessor, in terms of core gameplay. Games such as the infamous Atari flop E.T. and human rights violation Men in Black: Alien Crisis are actual shovelware, cheaply produced at extremely low quality and shoveled out to make a quick buck based on a popular product's popularity.

I just now read this. Yeah, I love the open world, but I think it killed the performance on older PCs, so that's probably why they'd segment it, as a large portion of their audience is composed of people who play the Sims and nothing but the Sims and therefore don't have a very powerful PC. Maybe it'll reduce load times too, because those are insanely long in 3, at least for me.

That's not what got EA declared evil. EA is considered an evil company due to a decade of news stories detailing the company's labor abuses, which set the stage for EA being a black company. Then when their business model came to light - a business model of acquiring beloved game companies, bleeding out anyone with an expensive pay packet, and then milking the IPs and remaining people until they're dry, at which point shuttering the company - it came to light at a time when EA already had a tarnished reputation, thus discoloring their image even further. And after all that, then came the review scandals. Labor abuses, parasitic and destructive behavior, and monetary manipulation of the marketplace - that's what got EA declared evil. The DRM issues were just icing on an already black cake.
But the worst of all was PR. All of these events were badly managed by its PR department (though the PR strategy may have been dictated by management, as is often the case). So, eventually EA fired their PR department and hired a new team, and one of the first things that new team did was the Origin bundle, in an attempt to start clearing up two decades worth of bad press.

Ubisoft is worse. To say the truth, I don't really hate EA and Origin... Only, their system is terrible. Most games I downloaded on Origin, I had to modify or download new files into the game's folder... And that turns down my excitement to play a new game from Origin.
I actually think that people are being way too hard on EA. I think it's just a matter of being "in" with everyone. If you see someone say that he likes EA/Origin on a forum, a bunch of people will reply "WTF GTFO LMAO" "wtf, EA sucks dude"... Basically, nobody wants to admit that EA isn't half as bad as everyone claims.
TL;DR, yes, EA sucks. But there are way worse game companies (Ubisoft?).
And please, don't let the mainstream hit you and affect you.

Gamers also never realize that they aren't helping by buying bad DLC. You pay for ANY crappy DLC they will make more crappy DLC and it will only get worse because they will keep stretching what they can sell you. Less and less for more money. Business only knows money and profit, you have to speak with your wallets!

I do mind how EA pulled out of Steam i mean those titles would of done f-ing well on steam.. pitty i refused to buy sequeled games on steam such as Dragon Age etc or mass effect since the other games goes to origins..

Well, since I've watched all of Jim's videos I already knew all those stuff (yes, even the ones that weren't completely obvious by common sense). While EA are absolutely evil, it's kinda unfair to not mention this- so are all the other "big" companies. All of them have skeletons in their closets (yeah, even Valve), EA is just one of those whose closets are made of thin air and therefore don't conceal shit.
Anyway, about the video and the boycott thing- EA didn't get any direct profit from the Humble Origin Bundle so buying the bundle is still not giving them money. It should also be taken into considerations that EA only published most of "its" games- sure it has a lot (and mostly negative) influence over the development of a lot of them, but in the cases where it doesn't, the games shouldn't be immediately shunned just because they had the misfortune of being published by a universally hated company.

Sterling has come a long way since being a (albeit funny) troll on Destructoid. His videos on The Escapist are well made and make really good points about industry bullshit. They're pretty fun to watch as well.

To be honest he's still capable of massive troll spikes when people piss him off- see some of the Jim & Yahtzee's Rhymedown Spectacular videos for examples- but some of the comments aimed at those videos are so toxic I really can't blame him. :/

Not directly related to EA, but the point is the same... some day ago a DLC (4 bucks for a building, an hat, a mission, an island and a track) was released for Tropico 5, and while I was lurking in the game hub, I've seen this message... No need to comment I guess. Until there's people like this one, all the companies will continue to do what they do... and in the specific case of Tropico (so, Kalyspo), it's even worse, as all the DLC files are already in the game files, they just have to activate them, as it was the case with Capcom for with RE6, Street Fighter, and probably many other games (and many other publishers ?).

EA really isn't that bad of a company, they published games like Crysis and Mass Effect which are games that many people know and love, I can understand that their client does suck pretty bad, but if you look at it, their just like any other company; trying to make some money, but I feel like people just naturally hate EA simply because everyone seems to hate EA. I can understand not buying shitty texture pack DLC's from EA, but they don't deserve this much hate. Honestly I think Activision is the company making a hell ton of money and not recieving any hate, they've released so many shitty games like Secret Service, and some of the Call of Duty games.
