I want to buy some pure tactical games during this sale, but I don't know what to choose, so please help me out. I want some pure tactical experience like attack from many sides, distraction-diversion, some various terrain to navigate like canyons or something like that, that can be exploited, but at the same time I want the game to be not overly complicated with research like Galactic Civilizations II for example. I've heard a lot of good things about AI War: Fleet Command, but I want others, with better graphics and with terrain. It may not be space based, might be a naval or land, fantasy, historical or current time. I guess resource management like gathering, protecting etc. is ok but I don't want something with like 10 different types of resources :) Also I like games with medium unit capacity, I mean not like Warcraft 3 (<20 units in command), but also not like >10 000 :). So what are the best 5 pure tactical strategy games that you liked the most ?

I meant strategy or 3rd person like Man of War, but not FPS or TPS like XCOM? Does Arma3 have such modes?

Total War Shogun 2 seems to be just the thing. Doesn't get any larger than that.

Supreme Commander? Heard 2 is kind of weaker than the first one.

Ruse is -75% right now also.

Have you been looking into the Dawn of War Franchise? The unit count might be quite low (lower than WC3 even), but it's much faster paced.
And it's pretty obvious: StarCraft II

Will buy SC2 when it comes in a complete edition. Doesn't DoW seems more or less like an RPG without a skill tree?

Not sure why you'd think that, campaign maybe, but I'd say it has a techtree (due to the choices you can make for your commander). But in any way, multiplayer of course isn't ;-)

Sid Meiers' Civilizarion' games falls under my overly complicated category, but I'll see the Europa Universalis IV and Total War series.

I'm not all that sure what would be defined as a "pure tactical strategy" game. It sounds like you're looking for games closer towards an RTS play style, though, and I don't play many of those.

  • Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is pretty good. It does have a bunch of research stuff, though, and there's not really anything in the way of terrain/obstacles.
  • WarGame could be worth checking out. Personally, I just couldn't get into the game. I don't even know why, haha.

Even though they're probably not quite what you're asking for, these games are really awesome, and I highly recommend checking 'em out:

Here is a list of games on Steam with the tactical tag. It might be helpful.

Dawn of War I & its expansions is a personal favorite of mine.

Also, because I doubt anyone else will mention it, The Lord of the Rings, The Battle for Middle-Earth II is worth a look.

(Based on your question, I'm assuming you want an RTS, and not a TBS or 4X game)

Action strategy games then.. Try Supcom (2 is fluffier, 1 is the better game);

If you decide to go for 4x-lite in space, SoSE: Rebellion is good but shines with the DLCs:

Saw you found Civilization as too complex, so avoid anything by Paradox and Grand Strategy and most 4x in general to be fair..
