So... I was just curious how are people usually idling in TF2, so I made some digging...

I made a new .txt file and I've put inside this:

D:\Steam\steam.exe -applaunch 440" -textmode -nosound -nopix -novid -nopreload -nojoy -sw -w 640 -h 480 +connect 46.4.63.69:27224

(you can replace this IP with any achievement_idle server, or you can make local server by replacing +connect 46.4.63.69:27224 with +map achievement_idle for example, this one is czech server, also don't forget to replace my Steam path with your Steam path)

(map name is achievement_idle, I don't know why it's not showing underscore symbol)

After that I renamed it to TF2 Idle.bat

(it's important to make it .bat)

This will launch TF2 in textmode and will connect me to local idle server.

So it looks like this.

Also maybe you want to disable in-game community to see announcements etc.

"GTFO, THIS IS NOT LEGIT!!!"

Yes, this system is totally legit, you're normally connected to server, it's only text mode, so it's not stressing your CPU and GPU, and it only takes 250MB of RAM for me.

Weekly drop is about 8-10 weapons and the item cap resets at Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m. pacific standard time. That means - start it every weekend for 8-10 hours, and you will get your weekly drop.

My question is - Do I have to be in team? Or it's enough, that I'm connected to VAC secured server? If it's necessary to be in team, how to do it?

Answer by Yatterman - You don't have to be connected to team, you will get your drop, once you're done idling.

No, you can just be a spectator and you will get items.

Or, instead of a bat file, you could just simply make a new steam shortcut, and put the parameters in the target location of that.

That's not working, since Steam is using URL shortcuts.

You can just into TF2 properties -> Set launch Options and write this: -textmode -nosound -noipx -novid -nopreload -nojoy -sw

Idle programs are illegal. You can get a ban if you use it.

Go instead ingame and play vs. bots. This is my way to idle.

Y U CAN'T READ?

Am I using third party software? I guess not. Idle means idle, so you can do other things without your CPU being stressed.

It's not an idle program. He's running TF2 in text mode.

right click it on steam and paste ur thing, or this (since I use it so im sure it works):
-applaunch 440 -textmode -nosound -window -nopreload -novid +map ctf_2fort
You dont really need the batch file : P

It's working, but it's good to have "Idle shortcut", because maybe you want to play it sometimes, so you can run it from Steam without having this "script" stored somewhere in txt file. :)

What is the point of being idle?

Metal.

You earn items from not playing instead of playing.

Idle = Weapons = Metal = Hats

Idling is completely useless due to the weekly cap.

It really sucks because I play TF2 so much.

Well, it's a guide only for people, which are not playing it, like me. :)

+sv_lan is also useful since you don't get connection errors (like me, due to crap internet)

You mean -sv_lan 1?

What's this command even doing?

+sv_lan <0/1> - When set to 1, launches the game in LAN mode. Useful to stop players from joining your game from the Internet.

You don't need to connect to a remote server at all. :|
This is what I use.
"C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -applaunch 440 -textmode -nosound -nopix -novid -nopreload -sw +map_background "itemtest"
And why bother with a batch file? Just make a desktop shortcut. (Or, you can do what I did and add a "non-steam game" to your library and change the details to the above so I can still launch it from my Steam Library.)
All the details are on the official TF2 Wiki anyway http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Idling

Seconded. A quick google search for "how to idle in tf2" gives you pretty much all the information you need on this. And the wiki has the best information collected in one spot.

Can i create a local match and just idle there using these commands?

And, once its done, do i have to enter the game again to redeem the items, or just leave the game and check the inventory later?

This is why I have a halo hat and you don't.

Actually you have a halo hat because you had the game before September 2, 2009 or September 30, 2010, whereas I didn't. Only using external programs caused people to not get the hat, this is not an external program.

This is what I've been using for quite a while now (shortcut):
Steam.exe -applaunch 440 -textmode -nosound -noipx -novid -nopreload -nojoy -sw -maxplayers 2 +sv_lan 1 +map "itemtest"

Local server for me = 500MB of RAM, connected to server = 250MB of RAM for me.

1 decade ago
Permalink

its 500 because you're hosting all the resources(server, client, bots), its 250 because youre only hosting half the resources (client) resources

my setup: -applaunch 440" -textmode -nosound -nopix -novid -nopreload -nojoy -sw -w 640 -h 480 +connect 70.42.74.48:27015

Also, before you go into text mode run the game normally and change all the settings (mainly video) to lowest. It does help and frees up around 100MB of RAM.
And itemtest map is probably the least resource heavy map.

its only 250 if you dont host the server on your machine.
