I'm in the market for a new mouse and I'm overwhelmed. I've window shopped at a couple of local stores before and know a few things I like, but I'm soliciting help here from some of you more hardcore folks to try and narrow the dizzying array of choices (none of which are universally praised, it seems).

Things I want:

  • A free wheeling scroll button. I know Logitech has several mice that do this, and I like it. I like the old MX way of clutching it, but understand I may have a lock/unlock button now. Edit: Now understanding Logitech is the only manufacturer that does this. I can live without it if there is a better mouse with standard scroll.

  • NOT too many buttons. I like the idea of a few handy programmable buttons, but I don't want/need an MMO-style mouse. Those are insane to me. I couldn't possibly keep track. I play RPGs, TBS, RTS, and some action/FPS games.

  • A fairly heavy feel. Adjustable if possible, but if not at least with some heft.

  • A "palm" grip mouse. I may fall somewhere between palm and fingertip, but I'm not a claw, and my palming may have something to do with the fact that too many buttons are daunting to me.

  • Good/great build quality. I want to keep this thing for at least 3-5 years. I want something solid. I'm willing to pay for it.

That's really about it.

My price point is anywhere up to about $100 USD. I don't give a damn about lights and "cool" design, unless it has some function as well. Could be wired or wireless. I know there are some that will slap me on the wrist about wireless, but I'm not a competitive gamer (or even a MP gamer), and I can't imagine my gaming suffering that much from microlag.

Thanks in advance for any help!

TL;DR: I'm looking for advice on a new mouse. Read bullets to see what I want.

You're pretty much limited to Logitech if you want a free scrolling wheel.

Of the current mice on the market, the G502 is probably the best bar none. The problems with it are the sniper button, which is useless, and it's a pretty heavy mouse which you want anyways.

I tested that mouse in store a few months back. I love the weighting (and the adjustable weights), the sensitivity adjustments, and the price for features.

But for some reason, it just didn't feel right. But I'm not sure why. Maybe it's more of a claw grip mouse? Not sure. Felt a bit small to me. Maybe like many things, I'd get comfortable with it and even enjoy it. Not sure.

I could probably live without freescrolling. It's just a nice feature. :)

And I think I'll go test hop a 502 again for kicks.

Thank you for the input!

Hmm it should fit more of a palm grip like the G400/500 but maybe you have large hands? I don't know. To me it felt alright but I have average size hands. If it felt uncomfortable though, you shouldn't get it.

Other mice to look at are the Steelseries Rival, Mionix Avior/Naos 7000, Corsair M45, and Zowie FK1 but they don't really fit your requirements.

If you don't mind small amounts of inconsistent acceleration, there are more options but I can't really recommend them. Maybe someone else will.

Thank you VERY much for the additional leads.

Dropped into a local store today to refresh my memory on the g502. They're clean out of them, and it isn't the first time I've seen that here.

I did try on the g700s and was quite impressed with the feel. I realized when I returned to work that I'm using an m705 here, so that may explain part of my comfort with Logitech form factor.

Also test drove the Corsair M65. Felt pretty good for the most part. Weighting was nice and I like that you can adjust the weighting as well. Not sure how well the sniper button works, but seems fairly well placed. DPI adjustment was easy, but maybe a touch too much gap between each click (would like more precise control).

At this point, either the M65 or the G700s would probably do me well. But I'll look into those you've mentioned as well as helixx and Jason's recommendations as well.

Hey thanks again, AloXX. You reminded me about the 502. I went and found one on display this evening and ended up buying it. It's a touch small for my grip, but it still felt good, and the buttons seem to be in the right places for my index finger and thumb.

Really appreciate your (and all) input in this thread.

No problem. As long as you're happy with the mouse then it's all good

Mad Catz

I bought a Logitech G400S a year ago and it's still great.

Wow. Those MC mice look complicated. Will check into them, though, and thank you very much.

Give the Logitech G300s a try. Really good stuff for the price.

I use a Microsoft SideWinder X8.
The price according to the link provided is pretty out there, but i got mine for under $80 brand new, and i have used it steady for about 3 years.

Thank you. Another one to research this evening. That actually looks up my alley.

FWIW, this is my grip

It's a strange palm/claw hybrid, it appears. It's hard to tell, but my hand is not resting on the mouse except on the very back right side. The base of my palm rests on the desk. My thumb curves inward, and my index and middle fingers are curved, but not pinched.

That's on a Logitech m705, for scale.

May not make a huge difference, but for those in the know, maybe it will.

Thanks again, y'all.
