So, DOW 2 is 7$ right now. I really want to get, but only have 9$ (and Im thinking of getting Oblivion or Skyrim GOTY). Is DOW2 worth it?

weird, site/steamgiftsplus still tells me I'd have replied here (shows Asterix), but I'm kinda certain the posting got lost in the maintenance.

Anyway, played Dow1 and it was great. Watched some DoW2 multiplayer and it was also great. However, I tend to ignore games with ~half a dozen different (standalone) addons, season passes and/or 500 dlc. I have no idea at all what Retribution is and why it has so many DLC and if it's worth it without them. I simply have no clue what to buy, and I will not buy the whole "complete" game for > 100 €uro (doesn't matter if it's Dawn of War or any other game). So no thank you, dear publishers.

Moreover, I ignored DoW2 as it only runs with Games for Windows Live. Though Enhanced Steam seems to have stopped warning me about this... err did they actually totally remove GfWL from it? That would be pretty good news.

However, I saw that it was $2 something on Nuveem some time ago, so I guess there's no point in buying it now at $7. Steam also ruined it for me, as I don't have any spare TF2 keys and buying new ones would leave me with 1 week untradeable keys. Otherwise you'd have been able to get it for 1 key from traders.

"I ignored DoW2 as it only runs with Games for Windows Live." That only applied to the first game + chaos rising expansion, and yes, GfWL was ripped out. DoW 2: Retribution (stand-alone expansion) was always only Steamworks.

"I have no idea at all what Retribution is and why it has so many DLC and if it's worth it without them"
As noted above, DoW 2 was stand-alone expansion, and has a heavy focus on multi-player. The DLC is a mess, but most of it is extra skins and/or strictly for Last Stand mode (= 3-player co-op horde mode). To sort them out:

  • The unlabelled packs (the ones without title in the store image) are wargear for multiplayer and as far as I've experienced they provide more options to tailor your army without unbalancing the game.
  • The Last Stand packs have "The Last Stand" plastered over the image and in the store description. But not in the store title.
  • The rest are skin/model packs which are purely cosmetic.

Price of the franchise pack sure went up when the game switched from THQ to Sega though. I picked up the complete franchise pack for 10 euros 2 years ago when THQ was still around...

From what i remember DOW2 and Chaos Rising have interesting campaigns, but Retribution is along the lines of choose a class, heres a planet (or a few planets) and you have to conquer them to win while fighting against other NPC races. Not sure if thats your thing, but i myself prefer a story driven campaign.

Yeah, Retribution campaign is about 7 maps, with plot being tweaked for the race you play but the basic objectives being the same for everyone. It's fun, but it's more of a practice mode than anything else.
For in-depth campaign, Chaos Rising is the best of DoW 2 :)

It's a great game. I've had it for years, and still play it from time to time. If you're a Warhammer 40K fan it certainly is a must-play, but even if you're not I'd give it a try. They removed GFWL a while ago, which is another good reason to play it now.
