So for the first time ever, I got scammed on steamtrades.com because I was so stupid not to realise that a guy with zero rep and a barely used Steam account would be credible.

He was selling a couple of CSGO keys for $1.80, and thought this was a steal. So I jumped to the chance and offered to buy all 17 keys that he had. He did offer to go first, but we had to do the deal in batches. He sent me 7 keys, and I sent my payment through paypal. I confirmed the payment, and then BAM, the motherfucker goes offline with my cash.

Basically, I wasn't sure if he was a good scammer or I was just stupid. Fortunately, I didn't lose too much money (though the amount is waaay too much for 7 keys). Safe to say that I'll be on a trading hiatus for a while, so I'll focus on my massive backlog instead (as well as uni, of course :D).

Apologies for the rant, feel free to have this post reported/removed, and I'll gladly oblige.

But before I go, here's a giveaway for a game not included in the dropdown list: ZW7C?-B44Q?-Q2ET? (replace ?'s with P, 2, and R).

Thanks for the key! Finally I ninjad something! :)

and sorry for your loss. I try to refrain from trades that are done outside the trade window. You never know if the guy is credible if he has little rep.

can't you ask for chargeback?

I can't unfortunately. Paypal doesn't do chargebacks if you send the cash with the friends and family option.

Eh, don't worry about it. At least it'll be payday soon. And I've also become more cautious with trading now, so there's that :D

Maybe you can open a PayPal dispute, to claim your money back.

I tried, but paypal can't do it when it's sent via the friends and family option

Call Paypal directly. Be polite and follow up frequently. You might still get your money back.

Nah, I've been in that situation and to be able to do that you have to go trough options that specifically state that is has to be a payment not a gift, only thing that it's good for is to freeze the funds on the scammers side for a few days but it'll get restored as soon as a paypal staff member sees the payment.

You know...
USE THE CHARGE BACK POWERFULL FINAL ATTACK

if you didn't sent money as a gift you are pretty safe, and your friend has pretty lost 7 keys :D

i got scammed in dogecoin trade, asked for chargeback, use the "goods not received" or something like that,
Then if he says something like "we are investigating blablabla..." you reply aggressive with "this contestation will become a denunciation in date"
If you get your money back, keep in mind that i helped you :C

It's a waste of time really, I've got dozens of open tickets some a year old and none of them have been handled despite having all the proof needed, not sure if it's because they don't care about ST or any other reason but it's become painfully obvious that SR is no longer of any use to traders on ST.

Yeah, that's pretty much the plan for now. I'm just happy that I didn't lose too much cash from it, though it still sucks :D

"He sent me 7 keys, and I sent my payment through paypal" so in reality he didn't sent you the keys? Cause as you explained seemed he sent them before you paid him.

he sent 7 out of 17 keys but he was paid in full before the others were sent which was the mistake.

And what makes you think he would pay it back if he is a real scammer?

Permalink

He wouldn't have a word to say in the matter.. Paypal would take it back and probably freeze his account.

I think PP always accept charge-backs especially if you claim that it was unauthorized transaction "aka account was hacked"

Damn, sorry to read that you got scammed, I guess you can rest easy in the knowledge that you're hardly alone. Scant consolation I know.

I tend to only trade with people in my friendslist and through another gaming site forum because the community there is largely trustworthy(and I don't wish to type the name here because then it will probably become inundated by leechers and scammers). Perhaps finding a small pool of reputable traders is your best course of action. Cheers!

Yeah, at least I have that going for me :D

I almost only trade on reddit because I know that their flair system works quite well and the community is great. I just check steamtrades if I'm looking to get keys for cheap when reddit doesn't have any advertised
