What I know:

+Its operating system (SteamOS) is derived from Linux, and probably tweaked for gaming

-You can only run Linux platform games on it.

+/- Many different types of machines (different components)

Help me know the upsides and downsides of buying a Steam-branded PC.

+easy to buy and set up for gamers used to consoles
of course for 1600 $ you say easy to buy ??

+cool case
you can get cool case for 70-100 $ so why spend 1600 $ for a cases that do nothing on performance ??

there are cheaper models, just choose what you want to pay and grab the one you like, no assembly required put the plug in the wall and play. I know there are cool cases as well, but that would require assembly, not a thing for the random casual gamer.

So I stand my point :p

That's still cheaper than a standard PC isn't? way cheaper than what i managed to get mine for.
Isn't this $1600 the whole system, not just the case? there isn't that many micro cases in the market is there? + some peeps like the branded image

I'm not sure I agree on 'easier to buy'. There are so many steam machines with very different specs and that will probably confuse many console gamers who aren't used to the whole PC thing and have always bought the latest consoles.

Pros:

  • Some steam machines have great price-hardware value.

  • They are basically a desktop PC that you can easily transport between rooms

  • Has linux which apparently has better performance than windows

Cons:

  • Has linux. You you won't be able to play some games specially non-steam games.

  • Comes with a controller. I don't use controlers on PC so I'm not sure if I would like one. Even if I did, the PS3 controller looks better and seems easier to use and you can plug it to your computer.

  • Fixed components. It's basically like buying a pre-built PC, it's not like you can customize it. Ibuypower has two versions as far as I know but that's it.

The components are not fixed.

This thread ends with, "-You can only run Linux platform games on it." That instantly eliminates 90% of the Steam game library.

False: You can set up a partition for Windows freely. Some SteamMachines even come with both.

Not really worth the money, I'd say just build your own pc.

depends on the steambox you can dual boot it with windows and play windows games too in big picture so its ok

You will need to buy Windows however.
Also, having two OS on a small HDD will hurt gaming performance.

where did you come out with that? having a dual boot machine (two operating systems) has absolutely nothing to do with 'gaming performance'.

but what's the point of booting on steamOS while you can have a single boot on windows, with steam starting automatically ?
For me, valve is only trying be be less dependent on windows, but gamer have no interest in it (except the gamepad if it"s good, but why not release only a gamepad ?)

Microsoft may ban Steam from future Windows OSs, their GFWL was destroyed by Valve's Steam.

That's why Valve created their own OS, in case of a lock-down by Microsoft and Apple.

If Microsoft does that, this would be their biggest fail, this will only make ppl pirating more games.

there biggest fail was to put everything on internet on window 8 and they will never go back because they can control every thing, like xboxm, they want to be every thing on there server so they can remove every hack/hacked game from xbox D:

Yet to be seen, most likely yes.

-You can only run Linux platform games on it.

False, you can install Windows

All PCs have this advantage to be honest

Advantages. It is already built.

Dissadvantages. It have pc components, but aint a pc.

Imo Its better to build yourself the pc. Yeah, you will spend just a couple of hours more building it, but once its working, you just add windows and download the games.

You can upgrade, you can play with your friends using skype or the built steam voice chat, you can listen to music, etc.
Its equally easy to move from room to room.

So Steam machine is still alive? I haven't heard single word about it since long ago... so I though that it was dead already.

Sad truth: Steam machine sucks

  • sucks as PC : because you can create better PC with this money, and arguments like "console gamers/casual gamers can't build their own machine because they are too f** dumb"" is no argument at all, it i BS. So what if you can choose here already build PC... even moron can go to shop and ask salesman for some tips or even ask on internet... and what is sooooo hard about building your own PC from parts that you can buy in every shop?!

  • sucks as a console: because it is PC! no exclusive titles for that…

It is bad idea to create something between PC and console… Steam machine wants to be both PC and console at the same time… but it fail in comparison to either PC or consoles.
