Solution:

After a bit of searching for the names of all of the people in the pictures, the only obvious connection between all of them is that airports in the USA are named after each of them. This might have been a somewhat difficult connection to make, but there was a slight hint in the title of the ITH quiz - A Chunk of Fancy is a combination of two common idioms - "Chunk of Change" and "Flight of Fancy".

Flight obviously indicates that you should be looking for something related to flights -> airports. The change portion comes a bit later. A list of all of the airports is given by Chour here. After placing them all on a map, you get this, which is a closed shape, that looks somewhat like a triangle. Unfortunately it's pretty much impossible to find a combination of different airports to make an exact shape, but I did my best. This is where the 2nd part of the title comes into play - "Chang" is a hint for the shape you see at the end - Greek letter delta is commonly used to indicate change.

The answer is Delta

It's been over a year since you and your friends last forayed into the Temple of Steamgifts. You miss the excitement and mystery of adventure - not even finding the Stick of Truth could quench your thirst. Well, today is turning out to be your lucky day. A package arrived in the mail today with no return address. Inside, you find a walkie-talkie and a letter:

"I've received word that a loud grinding sound was heard from within the Temple of Steamgifts recently. As the first ones to completely map the area, I thought I'd warn you that several teams of treasure hunters have already embarked to the site. Perhaps there is more treasure to be found."

It looks like it's about time to get off your butt! A new journey is about to start.

Now, to more interesting facts.
My search revealed the following information on the people:

  1. Edward O'Hare. Aviator.
  2. Wayne A. Downing. Aviator.
  3. Albert Bond Lambert. Aviator.
  4. Captain John August Earl Bergstrom. Aviator.
  5. Claire Lee Chennault. Aviator.
  6. Louis Armstrong. Musician (no info on him being in aviation).
  7. Trent Lott. Senator.
  8. Jack Edwards. Politician.
  9. Jasper Kennedy "Kay" Larkin. Aviator. - edited.
  10. Ben T. Epps. Aviator.
  11. Abram Hite Bowman. Aviator.
  12. Tony Hulman. Businessman.

Now, my guess is we have 12 people, 8 of whom are aviators.
Their names (first letters) might be the answer to the quiz or be the link to another itstoohard.

Update:
Tried itstoohard links with first letters of surnames and the order given - no luck.
Combinations of first letters of surnames in the given order as actual answers didn't work.
Either my guess is wrong or the order of letters is wrong (for all I know it could be an anagram!).

Update 2:
I think the idea behind 'airport names' proposed by natasa777 is really good one.
If the person behind q9 has an airport named after him, that could be the proof the idea is right.

Update 3:
Found q9! Indeed the airport hint helped a lot. He's Jasper Kennedy "Kay" Larkin.

WW, WW2, bomb, bombing, explosion, plane, airplanes won't get you anywhere. Tried out a few traditional parser commands from older games like Zork, also without any success.

Number 9 looks a bit like Gagarin. Or might be some other Soviet pilot.

Also, is it me or all the pilots on the list have not only a first name and a last name, but also some bits in between?

Not Gagarin. All of them are Americans. Names have multiple bits, yes.

Noticed it, too :)
Fame, Hall of Fame, prize isn't accepted. Could both ' A change of Pace' and ' A Chunk of Fancy ' hint that they were all somwhow better than others? (Being faster in pace, or betting a fancy prize.. I don't know, I'm starting to run out of ideas)
The middle name idea was quite good, but O'Hare is one name, the O can't be separated, as "O'Hare or O'Heare is the anglicised form of the Irish surname Ó hÍr. "

As Airport isn't an answer... : we need to go deeper? Looks like an absolutely possible answer (considering the propellers as well) , yet still the way of input needs to be found - what to type.
Definitely not the easiest puzzle I've participated in.

I have another idea of using FAA location identifiers for airports.
The list then would be:
ORD
PIA
STL
AUS
CWF
MSY
PQL
JKA
28J
AHN
LOU
HUF

Tried to order them into 6x2, 4x3, 3x4 and 2x6 tables. I hoped one of these will make out a word at first letters or something, but nothing there. :)
Also "go around, look around, bell, dress [ the form can look like ball gown :D ] " ideas were fruitless.
