Does anybody know that Witcher 3 have region lock? I ask, because the RU/CIS version (PurchaseRestrictedCountries) was created on SteamDB and i don't know. If i buy W3 today and after that they lock (can they?) it can i play or not? If not, is game lost or steam support can make smth with that?

There've been cases when games were retroactively locked, so even if it is not there now, it may appear later.

Ok, so volvo (xD) makes decision about region locks without opinion CDP-Red? They told "NO DRM".
And if it retroactively locked what with activated games (from region that not included my country) in account?

no drm = no steam... right?

so why w3 is on steam? :p Cause for they steam = online distribute like gog etc. But who can make decision about region locks? CDP-R or Steam?

steam is a drm plattform. steamworks title's are steam exclusive.

you can activate witcher 3 already, just redeem it while its not region locked yet.

So if they retroactively lock it i have 100% running version or they block it for me too?

If you redeem it before they lock it it won't affect you. If they lock it while you still have the game in your inventory you won't be able to activate it.

yes thats right i can confirm this, since i got Valiant Hearts gift and the next day they region locked it, luckily i activated it before that

Comment has been collapsed.

Not exactly true. It depends if it's play or activation lock. Seeing how previous games have playing lock, pretty sure W3 will get play lock too.

I just wonder how it will affect those copies that had RU+US regions...

Comment has been collapsed.

Having a play lock is pretty redundant right now, so chances are that they will not put it in.

Comment has been collapsed.

Why forcing people to ask Valve to delete game so they can buy it again so CDRed would get more money is redundant?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

MANY people including me have gotten the RU version of the game. Putting a play lock would certainly anger a lot of their fans. I'm sure CD projeckt won't do that to their fans.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, it's your fault for trying to play the system, so you can be angry at yourself.

Unless you're from US, they are pretty safe with those early copies as both RU and US used same subID.

Steam is a Store. Steam CEG is a DRM. Not every game uses it and there's many drm-free games on Steam, and it's a decision entirely on the devs/publishers.

You can always redeem no-drm version of witcher from gog using same cd-key that you use on steam.
AFAIK there are no region restricted games on gog.

Steam is NOT a DRM by itself, devs choose if they want to implement Steam's DRM. There are some games that after being downloaded, can be launched from main .exe even if you delete Steam.

This is an older list of drm free games on Steam: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_drmfree_games_on_steam/page1

It's completely up to CDPR. Steam doesn't decide what games to lock.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's only DRM-free on GOG.com. On Steam, CDP-Red enables DRM (like in Witcher 1 and 2.) That's their way of telling you "if you don't want DRM, buy from our GOG store."

They could have opted to not use DRM even in the Steam version (there are Steam games that don't have any DRM; you can copy them around and they run without Steam installed after the initial download in Steam), but CDP-Red opted not do that, so more people will buy from their own store instead.

if you have already activated the game it will stay forver.

If you bought a version of the game from outside your region, there is always a risk it will lock without warning. Don't expect Steam to give you any favours.

where in the OP does he say, that he buys in steam store? "If i buy W3 today..." doesn't say anything about where he intends to buy the game. besides, it is just completely obvious what he means. it really is.

wtf are you talking about? i won't buy anywhere. it was Milan99 who was talking about buying the game. you just don't seem to understand anything that is going on here, lol.

it's simple: everybody was talking about buying (indirectly) from RU store. everybody understood that. you didn't. that's the whole story. no need to go any further with this. whatever argument comes to your mind next - just keep it. ^^

when South Park was locked retroactively, people who already activated the game could play.

when Thief was retro-locked, people who activated could not play, i believe.

i took the chance and bought the cheap RU version while i could and activated it, seems it will work.

The RU version can't be activated right now. The copies that were bought before the RU version was introduced though are still completely region free.

yep, but we are talking about copies from russian steam store here, and a russian copy was like 20$ (even less; it was 9 keys, if i remember correctly, so 18$). won't get cheaper than that. ;)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

AFAIK gog-RU has it for around €15/$20.

And unlike Steam version (which will be play-locked for 99%, seeing how previous are - kinda wonder how it will go, since first RU version had same subID as US version) that one will be totally safe :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The steam version before the lock had the same subID, so i really don't see why you think it will be play locked. the current RU version will probably be, yes. but not the ones bought before that.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, even before lock it had different subID than EU version, while same as US version - so play lock can make tons of Europeans happy (not sure about other regions, checked only three).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually, at first everyone got the exact same subID. That subID is the same used by the US version now. That sub will never ever get a play lock, I can bet on it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

When I saw first "W3 pre-purchase RU cheap" thread I checked subIDs - EU had totally different than RU, while US and RU had the same. No idea about BR, AU and other regions, I only checked those 3.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Must have been after they finally put the separate subs then. Initially there were three subs only. A universal one, and two cd-key ones.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Pretty sure it was in first days. But then, maybe that thread was made few days later.

Still, it was funny to see EU version using different subID, while US and RU using same one :P

Also, I wouldn't bet on US not getting region lock. There's already Civilization 5, Dead Island or Saints Row 4...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Civilization doesn't have US region lock. Dead Island and Saints Row 4 are published by Deep Silver which have some weird region locking policies.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Also, besides: all those were locked since the beginning. If this happened, being retroactively region-locking, it wouldn't be no doubt reversed as it was in every occasion something like this happened.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Civilization for sure had at-least activation US lock, maybe they took it down.

As for others - would need to confirm, but I'm pretty sure there's few retroactively play-region-locked RU-games that might not be unlocked like week later - Aliens, Thief?

i'll wait the enanched edition...i dont do the same mistake 2 times..Bought the wiotcher 1 retail when it was released (a bit later..1 mounth i guess) and myy old salves wont working with the patch...but i loved the game. Preordered retail version of The witcher 2 and barely i can play it..due to the high numbwers of patch and issues at launch...played half the game and never finished it..upgraded days ago to Enajnched and activated on GOG..i will play it form beginning...but now i never preorder a game at full price, the region lock is one more reason to not buy it at launch.i will buy it cheaper and patched later. problem solved

well, i bought as cheap as possible (from RU store without lock). i doubt i will get another chance of getting this game for 18$ until 2016. so yeah, even if i intended to wait a few months after release, i would still have saved some money.

Unfortunately I am not an expert on these things, but when I got The Witcher 3 Gift from my Russian friend that I had done it for a birthday gift, I went into my inventory and there was The Witcher 3 without the red "This game you can activate / play with these countries, "and this writing was not there and so I turned quietly, but when I went to see details of account was" the Witcher 3 RU, "that does not seem fair that put blocking, because many others here, have had the same "trick" and there was no notice of Steam, so in theory for those who have it activated before a future Region-Lock can play safely and change the language of his country? In the end it is the fault of Steam if you have not notified of these "restrictions".
