For me Episode 2 are the weakest link. Even though there are major plot going on there (Anakin and Padme).
I have a soft spot for Episode 1 since that was the 1st movie I'd ever watch in a cinema (I was a wee lad) and my first exposure to Star Wars movie (Star Wars is not as big here as it is in the West). But after Episode III, I started to go online and research more about it, and I got to know more about the series as a whole. That's why I love the whole episodes, rather than the original trilogy only.

One thing I have noticed with some movies that feature 5.1 or better audio is that the center channel (voice) is often extremely low. Most sound systems remix the center channel into the two front channels if there is no dedicated center channel available. In that case the foreground noise will drown out speech. There's not a lot you can do about that without a proper sound system unless the movie comes with another separate 2-channel track that you can switch to.
On that note, I am really hoping that Isolation gives me my Alien fix considering the disaster that was Colonial Marines.
edit: The game is awesome.

Agreed.
Also, if you don't mind emulation and slow loading times, the old C64 Aliens game (the Activision one) fits the movie well and is a lot of fun... It's a series of smaller games from various points of the movie, the best being returning 4 marines to the armored vehicle, you have to switch between them quick as they're not safe unless at the vehicle or with another marine. They even got the motion sensor right! :)
Oh, and there's some great dialogue they added back into Aliens 3 in the directors cut, but you can barely hear it over the SFX, make sure you have subtitles on. I really feel sorry for the A3 crew - they were doomed from the start, how could they possibly do well with a budget film after Aliens? O.o
Comment has been collapsed.
The reason Alien 3 was so troubled wasn't because it was made for a smaller budget, it was because Fox horribly mishandled it. They started filming the movie before the script was even done. They took the first cut away from David Fincher and edited it into the theatrical mess it was. It got so bad on set that David didn't even want his name on the film.

ive never had any issues with understanding what they were saying in the Aliens series. i have the collection & have never had any trouble with having to adjust volume or change to subtitles. it might be that the words are a bit advanced for where you are at in understanding English, due to it being a Sci-Fi movie. so some of the words wont be used a lot in standard dialog, or made up due to it being a Sci-Fi film. such as the word "Xenomorph," it never existed before until the movies happened.

i find subtitles attract eye attention out of the whole screen and prefer to concentrate on understanding the native english speech no matter what, sacrificing some nuance of the speech to the photography and action (ok, i definitely activate subtitles on indian or japanese movies)

I guess there´s no localization in your language? I think it´s some kind of difficult to watch a movie, when it´s not your motherlanguage. I understand most, but it´s hard to follow the storyline when you have to translate it for yourself/ or read the subtitles, so I´m happy here in Germany all movies are localized and mostly very well.
Comment has been collapsed.
There is localization, but it's shit. Actors usually don't live themeselves into the original actor's position, so it's pretty emotionless. This is the main problem. But I want to improve my english, and make the high level exam :)
Understanding the story is not so hard, if you can understand, what people are trying to say. If you practice a lot, by watching films in english, you will understand it pretty well. Like I said my problem is that they are either speaking too fast or too silent :)
Comment has been collapsed.
So you pirated the movies and now you're complaining about the quality? >_>
Comment has been collapsed.
i guess it was a test to see if it made sense to actually buy them (typical gaming pirate excuse)
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, it's a valid excuse, because there's nothing like a movie review that people could watch... :(
If only there was a way for people to get other people's opinions on things before they buy them! >_< When, when will someone create a way to share opinions quickly with the rest of the world?!?
Comment has been collapsed.
It's not a valid excuse anyway.
Although it's understandable that one would want to test a game before buying, that doesn't give users the right to make up their own rules under which the game is distributed.

My first Alien movie was Aliens, and it is fantastic, I adore it, rarely I would rewatch a movie within the same month, but for that I could not resist.

I just did the same last Sunday. Watched Alien 1,2,3 & 4 on Popcorn Time. And you're right, speeches were bad, but movies were pretty good especially the first and the second.
The third one is more psychological, the fourth I think was just made for commercial purpose and was not that good (CGI nice but storyline was a mess).
Comment has been collapsed.
Just watched the whole Alien movies line as well, OP (except AVP, since I never watched anything about Predator).
English isn't my native language, but I guess it's the problem either with your language knowledge or with the quality of the films you downloaded. I understood all pretty easy without any problem, but I also used subtitles just in case. There is also a localisation for my language, but it sucks balls as usual.
P.S. Alien 7.5/10, Aliens 6.5/10, Alien 3 7/10, Alien: Resurrection 3/10

If you use subtitles you recognize the speech as well. My problem is that WITHOUT subtitles, I couldn't understand Clemens' and the principal's speech. It was either too silent or too fast. I could however understand Ripley, Bishop and Dillon's speech. Except the christian things, as I'm not a believer. If you turn on the subtitles, you will see that understanding is a lot more easier. :)

If I'm watching a film on TV, things are generally ok, but if I'm watching a DVD, I always put on [decent] headphones now. Otherwise, it's a case of turning the volume way up in order to hear the dialogue and inflicting muffled explosions/music/whatever on everyone else in the house. Conversely, listening through headphones, not only do I not have to turn the volume up as high but the overall sound mix is significantly better and dialogue is much easier to hear properly.
tl;dr get headphones

Unrelated to OP's post:
As a huge Aliens fan, I'd say the first two are the only ones that I'd say are a "must watch". Aliens 3, Aliens: Resurrection, AvP, and AvP2 are just too cheesy for me. I also watched the Predator movies, but yeah, 2cheesy4me.
Comment has been collapsed.
Resurrection had Brad Dourif, Ron Perlman, Wynona Ryder, and that awesome French dude from City of Lost Children and it was written by Joss Whedon so my threshold for what I'm willing to put up with is larger than some people's, perhaps.Agreed that it's hardly necessary viewing though, Alien and Aliens are really the only two I consider must-see.

As an Alien fan myself, it sucks that they can't land a GOOD videogame on the subject. It's perfect subject matter, and yet it keeps being repeatedly screwed up. In an age where "throwing money at it" actually makes fairly enjoyable (if unremarkable) FPS games, they can't even seem to get a single Alien game right.
Giger really got his design right with the xenomorphs, and the drone remains one of the most iconic and naturally freaky creatures in cinema. Facehuggers especially have a natural spook/squick factor that got totally overlooked with more recent titles. They were eerie and ominous simply because the crews never understood what they were / intending / doing until it was too late. In later movies all they did was focus on how gross and squelchy they could make the facehuggers, deliberately trying to show the ovipositor and make a show of nasty, conscious gagging noises on victims. Bah.
Then again, this is also an age of games where "real" horror is rare, and instead we get stuck with a jump-scare genre instead. I don't even mind jumpscares that much provided they aren't too cheap and don't masquerade as something they're not. I enjoyed Five Nights at Freddy's for this reason : It's self-aware, and doesn't pretend to be something it's not, and is better for it.

Read Sterling's Isolation review on The Escapist. Sounds like the game might be exactly what you're looking for.

I have the first one on DVD and its very clear, but I think it was "digitally remastered". Also don't forget to watch Prometheus! I don't know if its been confirmed but this new series sure seemed like the "prequel" to Alien. Its by the same director and everything.

Aliens > Alien. The others I pretend they don't exist.

Sigourney was frakking gorgeous in 4, besides that I think 2 cant stand in the shadow of the original, they are not even the same genre of movie

i disagree, i like that cameron went right im never gonna make a better horror movie than alien lets go with what i know and thats guys/girls with guns, i think my first nightmare from a movie was falling asleep watching aliens special edition vhs when i was about 10 years old though so i wasnt without scares:)

What is wrong with Prometheus? I saw Alien, Aliens as a kid and have been a fan ever since. Prometheus was a great reboot of the series in my opinion. Can't wait for the second movie.
Only part that was lacking was making us care for most of the team. Character development was a little too cut out to the bare necessity.
Comment has been collapsed.
Fairly certain that Prometheus was NOT a reboot though. It takes place in the same universe as the Alien movies, but is quite distant in terms of time, space, and theme. So, it was sort of a prequel, but not in any way that is incredibly obvious to viewers.
As for the quality, I agree with you that it is worth watching, and I personally would say it's my third favourite Alien film after Alien and Aliens. Alien 3 and Resurrection were interesting in some ways and had good ideas, but were poorly executed.
Comment has been collapsed.
Maybe we define the term differently. It has been like 20 years or so since the last Alien movie (Not counting AvP as they are non canon). It takes place in the same universe as you said but in an earlier time so sort of a prequel (it should have 3 movies and lead up to the events of Alien, it isn't known how closely in terms of time though).
So I consider it a reboot, they took the franchise, instead of trying to continue a failed canon [minor spoiler of the 4th or was it the 3rd movie?] of Ripley being some sort of Alien infested clone, they went to tell the origin story with the same general idea of a team learning about Aliens and a strong female lead.
Comment has been collapsed.
As much as I'd like to think the opposite, Ridley Scott stated that Prometheus wasn't a prequel to Alien.
You can consider it a prequel if you want - I do - but it's not canon.
Comment has been collapsed.
I remember that interview, but there have been a lot of conflicting statements made by both Scott and other people involved in the making of Prometheus, like the chief writer.
Scott for example has said...
"while Alien was indeed the jumping-off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place. The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative."
"by the end of the third act you start to realize there's a DNA of the very first Alien, but none of the subsequent [films]."
"Yeah, it's not the same planet at all. No. If there was a sequel to this, which there might be if the film is successful, there'll be two more of these before you even get to Alien 1."
Everyone seems to agree that at the very least, Prometheus takes place in the same universe as Alien. That would seem to make it at least A prequel, if not THE prequel. That is to say, it must exist as one possible "dimension" in a parallel universe situation.
Comment has been collapsed.
In the end, it's up to the viewers & the fans to decide.
As far as I'm concerned, I consider it a prequel. Of course, the planet is not the same, the derelict ship isn't the same, the events that lead them to crash on LV-426 (not LV-223) occured long ago and have nothing to do with Prometheus.
Same engineers, same "cargo", different events, different place. If anything, I take Prometheus as the big answer to the mysterious Space Jokey and its cargo.
Comment has been collapsed.
I only can say that Prometheus have a weak script, the most of characters don't do anything, Charlize Theron's character is only a ornament, the idea of engineers is good but is not well development, and lost all the terror and suspense that have the first alien film with "spectacular fancy" scenes like the Fifield "zombie" attack... I must say that I had high expectations but I finished disappointed for the film...

Overview of the Aliens V Predator games includes Alien Colonel Marines by a Youtuber, Its interesting and you may watch it as you took the time to watch the movies
Comment has been collapsed.
You might want to play Alien Colonial Marines while you're at it. JK.
I always use subtitles, mostly because I don't turn my volume all the way up and I hate missing out on the dialogue, especially for movies. The volume levels for Sitcoms and dramas are usually more predictable.

and found understanding pretty hard. I mean english may not be my native language, but the sound volume was terrible. Sometimes the beeping and screeching was louder than the actual speech. I found out that I could easily understand Ripley and Ash's voice, but when they
started talking about made up scientific things, I lost the line (you know when they are landing on the planet). After that it was fine. I could easily understand the first two movies characters's speak, even Newt's. They were articulating and acting pretty good, but yesterday I watched Alien3. Thank god, that I had subtitles. The principal's speech was terrible. I mean he started out his line silent, and tried to play that he is angry. Sometimes his speech was too fast to understand. Still when Ripley talked with Bishop, I could easily understand
their conversation. Is it only me, or the others's speech was really hard to understand?
P.S.: Yes I know that Alien Isolation is based on the first movie, but I wanted to see the full story.
