This imgur picture posted in the OP is safe. Don't click on png links in chat, though.

Why is .png risky?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it's not. if you have a server you can redirect any extension to cgi script. But this one is on imgur and is just a screenshot of steam chat with a scamer who used their own scamming server.

I don't think mentioning people is allowed, but nickname starts with "Yum" and has a girl on the picture.

If you're talking about me, I'm a real gamer and not a scammer. The girl on the picture is Selene, from Underworld, by the way...
And I've never asked you as friends on Steam to trade with you, that I know for sure...

"trick"
Unless you're really really lonely... that shouldn't be able to get past the average person's common sense... The whole "ASL" giving away is like #1 on the red flag scale on a bot.

Also beware of people who are offline sending random messages either asking to trade or offering an avatar, and like that link posted above, beware of urls that show docs.google and screenshot, png in the address. Another good idea is to make sure your browser is set in settings to ask your permission every time you want to download something (Firefox's default is to always ask permission, but Chrome's default ISN'T), because these links try to make your computer automatically download a file that I hear will also activate automatically, and when it does it will hack your Steam account (maybe even give your computer a virus too) so be warned.

"beware of people who are offline sending random messages either asking to trade"

Not that it isn't a good a advice in general, but there are legitimate reasons for that.
I started using the browser for trading for ease of use (the community front only and not the store front) and it shows me as 'offline'.

I never get these. Why? Because I don't accept random friend requests. Easy peasy.

That's a simple solution, but many of us have trades posted on steamtrades, which makes it harder to see who is scammer and who is not. And it looks like those link-sending accounts start to have pictures for their profile. This makes it even more confusing.

When I post on SteamTrades, I say "Please post here before adding me; I don't respond to random friend requests".

Works well enough.

I do this also, saying "Comment on my profile if you send a friend request to why you are friending me."
Most of the time, they ignore this, so I ignore them.

If random people trying to friend me can't follow 1 simple instruction, I guess it wasn't important.
I also don't have trades up so I know most of the time they are scammers/begging for free games/group invite spammers.

I do the same. It's the first line in the profile, for crying out loud. The only way to miss it is to not look.

I know right.

Those people probably click a profile, click "Add Friend" to dozens of people a day.
They most likely barely look at a profile for more than 2 seconds.

I did do that (had it in the 1st line of the profile), but then used a custom box I unlocked (after leveling up my profile) to go into more detail.
Since people love to spam invites (both friends and group, most of the time to other languages i don't speak), it gets annoying.

This.

So much.

If random adds are below level 5 or so, I block them too. My reasoning is simply because 90% of the time they're either scammers or bot accounts.

Put a must reply demand in your thread. Its the easiest way. I have it bolded at the top of my threads "Please comment or you will not be added".

I also used one of my level perks to include an info box on my profile that states "Do not add me randomly". I still get the level 0s and obvious scammer accounts adding me (probably 1-5 per day) but its gone down significantly otherwise. I was averaging 10+ random adds for a while b/c of reviews I've written.

If you post on other trading sites, on places like TF2 Outpost or even Reddit include prices you're willing to accept and state you're only willing to accept trade offers (include your link if necessary).
