So basically when trying to open the WGN group, I got "greeted" with this "lovely" page

I have literally no idea whats going on, apparently Carl didnt got informed by Valve in any way about the reasons or such.

I hope they will find some way to continue the group activity, as right now it doesnt look all bright there..

Edit: There is a temporary other group meanwhile for people to use : http://steamcommunity.com/groups/wgnchat

As what comes about GL promo keys: since these were done on a third party site other than the currently closed group, technically speaking they were not affected in all. Now what comes about possible promos in the upcomiong futur, its really up for the admins to see. Right now, they should be really really careful though so that Valve doesnt close their second group

UPDATE 3: Its becoming pretty clear that the group in all will move to http://whosgamingnow.com/ . At least Valve cannot do anything there, since its not part of their service. There might be a slight hope for the community after all...

If there is anything new, I will of course update the post

EDIT 4: Since the other thread got closed, I think it would be easier to merge all these subjects in this topic as one standalone. Please try and keep things civilised as much as possible, thank you. Instead of jumping on the old thread, maybe try to come up with some constructive comments. Its not a flame war that we want to achieve as it would make certainly more harm than good. If you want to help us out, please do join WGN website and wgnchat if you want to support CarlMundo and all the other ones working hard to keep this community alive as much as its makable, but please, DO NOT make your own "vendetta" against whoever you consider the culprit. If we want to get our voice taken seriously, we need to act like such and think cool-headed

UPDATE 5: So it seems we have more info about the details of the group closing. To quote from Carl: "Today I finally found out from Steam support why the group was disabled. It's because we were running contests on the forum (contests hosted elsewhere were fine). It wasn't because of our greenlight promotions or certain individuals. "

Im pretty sure that all those GL promo haters are now biting their nails hard

UPDATE 6: WGN is back on the website!! Goood news everybofy

I guess Valve did not like them promoting "vote this greenlight game and get it for free if it reachs Steam"?

with this logic they could have closed the Paranormal Research Group, the one for the Undead Nightmares: Terror From the Deep one and so on..

I would assume scale is a factor in drawing that sort of attention. paranormal research only bribed keys for paranormal research. thats like getting pulled over for speeding and complaining that some other speeder who you decided to pass didn't.

Well, they have a website. They could just roll their own thing instead of using the Steam community.

Although if this is an actual crackdown on the "vote yes, get key" scheme, Valve might not take kindly to that.

1 decade ago

Because everyone has the same tastes in games as you do, right? Right? Did you ever stop & think that maybe, just maybe people voted for the game because they actually liked the look of the game, & getting a free key was just a bonus?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Of course not everyone has the same tastes, but the fact of the matter remains that with a group the size that WGN is/was (I think about 60,000+ last I saw??) there were many people voting for Greenlight projects for no other reason that being promised something free in return, and wouldn't have done so otherwise.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope.
It's other way around, people want to boost game count (game collectors) and if the game is good it's just a bonus.
It's mostly this than what you said. xD

Or actually beta testing, even for 30 minutes, the games they're going to release. Not like they release tens of games everyday anyways. Just one person could spend 30 minutes a game and it would be sufficient to tell how release-worthy it is.

I'm sorry but that is a cop out and not an acceptable answer or solution. We don't need Steam full of that kind of stuff. That's what Desura is for, or other sites like Big Fish games, etc.

so what if a good game gets on steam with bribery?

should we shun games that are good because they use a art style that is not "in" or because it is using a gameplay mechanic that has been shunned by most of the gaming community? In reality the greenlight system is shit and will most likely always be shit no matter what steam does.

the best solution i have heard was from someone on this forum. Make a opt in greenlight version of steam to satisfy those of us that want to see all those games that people say are shit without even trying them. and have a opt out version of steam (sort of like the beta version). for the opt in, allow everything on to steam, and require purchases immediately. once there are a certain number of Purchases let it go on to premium steam or whatever you want to call it where people bitch and moan about having too many choices. that way it is win//win. people that bitch and moan can be shown actual sales numbers and people that want to try out any ole game on steam can.

EDIT: BTW, Battlepillars is one of those games that is quite fun, but since it looks like a phone game, it would have never been greenlit without that bribery I'm sure.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You don't have to play them to see or know the truth of the matter. Not that there weren't some junk games before, but a lot more are finding their way onto Steam now due to Valve seemingly inept ability to properly curate anything whatsoever.

voting greenlight to get a free key if that game got greenlighted.
but, some of the games advertised on that group were actually nice, and they developed a reserve system for the keys, with steam open ID and everything.

1 decade ago

True that his interests are irrelevant to this thread. I'm merely saying that just because this is a thread about the group, doesn't make it "wrong" not to care about it. I guess I assumed you thought there is something "wrong" in not caring. Personally I would be happy if it stopped so I wouldn't have to try to find all these free games anymore. Same thing with Steamgifts. If Steamgifts was ended, I would have more time to do more important things.
