No, I think based on the number and somewhat similar release dates we can assume these games are in direct competition, as they are exactly the same, and one must be better than the other.
I mean, sure, one is a squad-based military shooter with vehicles and 64 player population caps, as well as a class system, wherein 50% of classes have tools for destroying vehicles and the other is a more traditional lobby based FPS without vehicles, meaningful classes distinction, and kill streaks. They're basically exactly the same, and should be debated as such. Otherwise, why would they both have 3 in the name?

Assault 'mechs are usually regarded as the best, seeing as you can cram an obscene amount of medium lasers on them and just leg whatever you come across. But I find that heavy 'mechs have a greater range to upgrade their engine speed-

I prefer the heavier medium mechs myself. Greater speed and maneuverability combined with impressive firepower. I personally like to go with energy weapons so that I don't have to worry so much about the limitations of ammunition or explosions, but I can manage the delicate balance of firepower vs. heat sinks and, more importantly, manage my heat itself in combat quite well. For others, LRM/MRM/SRM's and high-powered ballistics like large AC's, Gauss rifles and such may be more their style.

Depends on your preferences really.
Stealthy:
Silenced weapon, akimbo FMG9s for close quarters quick kills if required, scavenger if you find yourself needing ammo often or sleight of hand for quick reloads, assassin and either sitrep, stalker or marksman depending on preference. Assault killstreak package (I often go Predator - AH-6 Overwatch - AC-130).
Myself I use:
AR/LMG with sights, akimbo FMG9, Sleight of Hand, Hardline, Stalker, Predator/AH-6/AC-130 killstreak package.
Sniper with either heartbeat sensor or thermal scope, MP9 with silencer (silent takedowns on enemy, better range and accuracy so good for close quarters where a sniper rifle might be meh), Sleight of Hand, Quickdraw for bolt-action sniper rifles and otherwise it depends, Stalker.
Oh and for the people raging about akimbo FMG9s: Rage at Activision. I'm not going to handicap myself by taking weaker weapons just because it is considered noob. War isn't fair, I'm not either.

stay out of akimbo range xD? thats a good one ;D so only use assault rifles/snipers over great distances :P?? Also I'm not really the 'Sprayer and Prayer' type :D I like my aim down sight ^^
but yeah .. you're right, normally it is Activ /IW and whatnot to blame for akimbo ... that was a pretty gamebreaking idea ;D

What exactly is wrong with you guys? He asked a question. If you can't think of anything better to say than "BF3" "any other game", then don't reply.
Modern Warfare 3 may not be this amazing game or anything, but it's still a game and people actually enjoy it. You know?
(And for the record, I don't play much CoD multiplayer, but I am a huge Battlefield fan. I play CoDs for the campaign and Spec Ops.)
Honestly, I can't really help much here, but the typical "class" I use is UMP-45 > Double perk > Red dot > increased fire rate
As for perks, Sleight of Hand, Quick Draw, Stalker.

Most shotguns in MW3 are just downright awful from what I've experienced. Every time your fire a shotgun shell in that game Newton shakes in his grave a little.
No, seriously. Pump action guns are not 1 hit kills in close range (I'm talking close range, not extreme melee range, and even then you can miss because the spread is huge) and the pellets vanish in mid-air if you go for medium. They're atrocious, unless you're using an automatic shotgun which fires a billion pellets a minute. Might as well just use a flamethrower or a tactical stiletto heel.

I use mp5 + silencer (kick) / p90 + rapid fire (kick)
sniper rifle as second primary
Frag/semtex - flashbangs
The "run some more than usual" perk
Overkill perk (carry 2 primary weapons)
Marksman (see red name on enemies from a longer distance)
You can switch the first one with the "2 attachments" perk if you like

I love this class. And using it in Seatown is absolute domination.
The killstreaks basically let you have a radar on constantly, while having the enemy's jammed constantly.
You really don't have to aim with the shotgun, so that's why the steady aim is useful. The P99 is there because, if you can fire fast enough, its super satisfying to get a kill with it. Flashes are fun regardless, and the throwing knifes are there to humiliate the snipers who camp.
I would say that this class is really only efficient in CQC levels, and its absolutely garbage in places like Village.
