I don't want to call out names yet, but it's incredibly shady for people to either enter for games they already have, or leave comments like "IF I WIN CAN YOU SEND THIS TO MY FRIEND BLABLABLA PLS TNX". Knock it off, people, don't we want a positive environment? Don't ruin this.

Here's just an idea, steamgifts.com scans which games you have, and hides all the giveaways with those games included.

From what I understand, the creator doesn't want it mandatory for everyone to make their steam profiles public.

Your account needs to be public for the site to get that information, cg was not sure that forcing people to make their accounts public was the right thing to do.

Unfortunately, it seems there are a fair number of bad apples in here. I'd say it may be for the best to give people the choice of going public, or not being able to take part. These people who're just joining every giveaway are not doing themselves any favours, they're putting a bad taste into the mouths of everyone with some scruples.

Then how about this:
Bob enters a giveaway for Magicka, but he already has that, and has his profile set to private. He wins the giveaway, and Bill (the creator of the giveaway) asks him to make his profile public just for some time. When Bill sees that Bob already has the game, he asks cg to reroll the contest.

I can understand both sides of the issue, but my personal opinion is that making your profile public as a condition to be eligible to win free games is not unreasonable. I can already see this spiraling out of control as people collaborate to form groups to enter contests, then simply trade the winnings amongst themselves.

I like this idea too. I mean, it should be a fairly open community anyways right? Plus people don't have to have identifying info on their steam profile.

I like this idea more on the fact that I don't want to see giveaways for games I already have =)

-_- i already told this idea to CG 2 days ago so ...

Sounds good. Also should get rid of the email and only let the giver see your account. Email at most should be used for steam gift account recovery (even that would be dumb since it's used for steam recovery which is used to log in here..)

I'd like to be able to filter out what games I already have as well as being able to see a wishlish so if I had a game that only like 5 of the 2600 members really wanted I could make a private giveaway type thing.

I think those a great ideas! Filter results and be able to create giveaways for people that only has X game on their wishlist.

Having our accounts public looks like it has a lot of upsides to me. What are the downsides? Obviously there's the ethereal privacy issue, but I mean specific issues that people could have.

Indeed.

Also, in this case, if you don't want personal information to be public, don't put it on your profile. Simple as that.

agree with you OP. I have entered a few on this site and not one of them I own... I like to get new stuff, not get shit I already have, doesn't make sense why these people do that.

I agree, there should be a filter or something that only shows games we do not own

1 decade ago

More then a filter, it should just not let you enter for games you own.

That'd be nice,. but I don't think it can be made easily.

Is there any way to pick another winner? One of the two that won already owns the game I was giving away.

1 decade ago

I'd like to know this as well. I know the winner is chosen randomly, but I don't want to give the game to someone who already has it (especially when I specified NOT TO ENTER if they do), and I don't want a negative image for not giving the winner the game.

If not a suggestion, allow the giveaway creator to start a veto against a winner which could be verified by site admins. Or contact all the entrants and have a vote to uphold to veto or not.

I had sent out the gift, but revoked it (by sending it to myself) when I found out that they already had the game. As such, they have marked as if they received the game.

Just going to send a courteous email saying that that code doesn't work.

I admit that when I want to win a game I enter every giveaway that has it. What would be good is that if I win that game, it would withdraw my entries from the other giveaways. I'll do this manually anyway, but still, wouldn't be good to win something I already have if someone else who doesn't have the game could win it.

I concur; I entered all the portal giveaways after loosing on 4 giveaways. I check the site frequently to make sure that, in the off chance that I do win, I can withdraw from the others on time and give others a fair (and improved) chance of winning. However, some of the giveaways for the same game end at the same time or very close to one another. Maybe the times should be arranged so that there is a difference of at least 30 mins between giveaways for the same game? There is the possibility, however, that this was designed especially so that people choose one or the other (if giveaways for the same game end at the same time, I usually don't enter both which is the quickest solution to my moral problems).

The community itself should start by practising some self discipline by only joining contests for games they don't own.

This would be the case in an ideal world, but quite frankly it isn't.

Why do you think we're discussing this? Because the a bunch of the "community" hasn't shown any self discipline and has entered multiple giveaways for games they already have.

How about in cases of pack giveaways? There one open right now for the Half-Life Anthology, and I would've liked to enter for Opposing Force, Blue Shift and Team Fortress Classic. But I already have Half-Life! :s Oh well, might as well buy them and enter a different giveaway instead.

In that case you will get a extra copy and can set up a half life giveaway to give it back to people who want it :).

look at the guy FatalErrorVXD who won the Knoxx DLC for Borderlands :P he doesn't even have the game O_O lol...

I think if there would be a minimum Steam rating required to join a giveaway a ton of those multiple accounts would be blocked. Ofcourse it would also hit the ppl that rarely play games :P but ofcourse why enter a giveaway if u don't have time to play the games anyway ^^

Your Steam account has to be worth a minimum of $30 to even register. I think that's a bit better requirement than, say, encouraging people to spam to raise their rank.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Who said anything about spam?

Just saying in addition to having an account on Steam with some purchased games, also take a look at the Steam rating to filter out the accounts that ain't active.

I think Steam rating though is kind of a joke. What if I am currently playing a non-Steam game (which I am) but have multiple hundreds of dollars invested into Steam. Am I then not allowed to enter giveaways just because I bought a game not through Steam?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

i agree, that's a bad side-effect. But if somebody is a regular Steam user (the group the site is aimed towards) they ussually do have some hours putt into games. Even when I got 4 non-steam games I play there's always a bit of time I spend on a game like beat hazard, audiosurf, galcon fusion or w/e other game. If you are not active anyway on Steam how could we ever check on the account?
