If you add funds to your wallet with a new CC, you will be locked out of the market for a week. Been locked out since day 1. Other people are having the same issue. Just read the Steam forums & see for yourself.

sunshoes (9 months ago)

Weird. I've added wallet funds from my credit card probably a dozen times since the summer sale started alone and have yet to have an issue.

It only happens if it's a new payment method, so if you used that card before then nothing happens. I'm locked out until the 19th too because I used my sister's Paypal to add some money to my wallet.

DackXYZ (9 months ago)

Yep, if you'd read these forums you would've seen plenty of people who've already had that problem.

Zomby2D (9 months ago*)

I've added funds to my Steam wallet twice since the beginning of the sale and I've been able to use the market just fine. I think the problem arise from the fact of using a new card, if you're using one that's already on file you shouldn't have any issue.

after every wallet add or purchase i delete my CC so it doesn't stay in steam database

i added funds yesterday again by adding my CC as new one and don't have this problem

Nixanikaas

When you say "on file" do you mean a CC I've used before or a CC that I have information saved on Steam. Don't know if that made sense... lol But hopefully you can answer my question, because I never save my CC information.

Jamoke

I have my CC information saved with Steam (they ask for CCV with every purchase so I feel ok leaving the info there. (They don't show the whole number anyway so if ever my account was hacked, no one would get my actual number)

However, Nixanikaas said that he doesn't keep the umber on file with them but enters it every time. So I'm guessing as long as you use a card that you've previously used with them you're ok.

Zomby2D

Alright, thanks for the info.

we only get blocked for the first time we use each credit card. If you use different ones, like me, you'll get blocked everytime. Or use paypal and pay the fee to avoid waiting :) (the first time you use paypal, you'll get blocked too :P)

AJValentine (9 months ago)

Might be worth adding that the exact same thing happens for "new" paypal payments. It's a safety precaution. You have to register it sooner or later though.

frozened (9 months ago)

I fund my wallet with trading cards sold on steam market

Nixxi (9 months ago)

Same thing happened to me, but oh well i have an alt, no worries.

cfriend (9 months ago)

Why are you loading a wallet anyway? Why not just make the purchases on the card? Never understood this.

You can only access the market from your Steam Wallet.

sunshoes

You need to add wallet funds to make community market purchases. You can't buy from the market direct with a credit card.

Edit: And I think you need wallet funds for in game purchases like TF2 and Dota 2, too.

dovecoon

Oh I see. Thanks.

cfriend

So that you don't save your card but can easily buy games.

pielord17

Community market and in-game purchases use your wallet. I loaded some money on there at the beginning of the sale to give myself an easy to follow spending limit and to not have a bunch of small purchases on my credit card from buying multiple games.

Zomby2D

Nepherius (9 months ago)

No idea why ppl add fund to steam wallet, especially with that 5$ limit, why not use paypal ?

some may want to trade items on market

some kids probably prefer to not bother their parents for every purchase, so it look like they shop less often

Nixanikaas

I use the wallet so I don't have a crap ton of small charges on my bank account to keep track of. Just one big charge to fill up the wallet and that's it.

JoeyBeanz

HiddenSnakes (9 months ago)

I am blocked till the 18th :/

GetKraven (9 months ago)

Why not just add your new credit card to your paypal account?

Not everyone has paypal.

BlazinPhoenix666

why give paypal (additional) cut?

Nixanikaas

Using my credit card through my paypal doesnt incur any additional fees, and when buying from steam i dnt have to pay any currency conversion fee like i would do at my bank and when i do else where its less than what my bank charges.

Destrado

Paypal can have their cut if they want, all zero cents of it.

Lrdx

What cut? Any time I use it I pay exactly what was supposed to go to the merchant and nothing more. If paypal takes a cut of anything, it's out of what they pay to the merchant. Which doesn't bother me any.

JoeyBeanz

Don't most big companies have deals with PayPal where they pay hardly any fees in exchange for the money idling on the PayPal bank acc for a while so PayPal can farm interest?

TimL

I dunno, it's possible. But it doesn't effect us in any way, we're still paying the same amount. I couldn't care less about how much money or how long they wait to pay the vendors/merchants.

JoeyBeanz

Any time you use a credit or debit card the payment has to be processed via a payment processor, whether that is Paypal or another company that does it. All of those will charge a percentage of the purchase and sometimes a fee on top of that to purchase it. The customer doesn't see it, but Paypal definitely takes a cut and it's not unlike Valve's cut for when you buy something in the community market.

That's why a lot of small businesses won't take credit cards, only cash or checks and some require a minimum purchase if they do take credit cards or may charge extra to use one. The minimum purchase is to ensure they actually make a profit from the sale, if you buy a pack of gum and pay with a credit card, the store isn't likely to keep much, if any of the transaction. Of course in this day and age where most people hate to carry cash and prefer to carry only a debit or credit card, it can mean a lot of lost sales to not accept a card, so it is a fine line stores have to balance when they consider what payment options to accept.

I actually used to sell payment processing services to small businesses, so I know pretty well what the costs were for it, and while the equipment itself was indeed costly, it was also an ongoing cost to the business. And as things change with cards, they also have to upgrade the equipment as well, plus it has an additional cost of needing some sort of internet connection (some stores even still use dial up for processing payments believe it or not, it may be slower, but it's cheap, but many stores use DSL for this) because it requires an internet connection to get that immediate acceptance or decline of the card.

ladynadiad

I know how it works, I worked retail for 8+ years. My point was that it's stupid to say that your reason for not using paypal is because they are getting "an additional cut". That just makes no sense what so ever. You're paying the same amount whether you pay with a credit card or paypal so why does it matter. All the fees that happen behind the scenes are between the vendor and paypal (or credit card company) and do not impact you in any way.

JoeyBeanz

^agreed to this, when I top up wallet directly from my CC, steam takes MYR17.76 for each USD5, then when I try using Paypal it only deduct MYR16.5 for each USD5 for me.

Bump for help.

CrysisX (9 months ago)

I got locked out once, never again :p

CT3LA (9 months ago)

Well if you live in the US or Canada, you could go to a game store and buy a steam card. You won't get locked out, and the funds go directly to your wallet with no fee to pay.

quasarballz (9 months ago)

same for paypal if its a new account

InvasorKazz (9 months ago)

Bump, canĀ“t use the market till the 23rd, thanks Steam, not like i planed to use it in the sale.

Foaman (9 months ago)

I'm confused, I have never used steam wallet before, if I add funds to it using the same CC I have been using for regular purchases, is it going to get locked out for a week?

No. It only happens if you use a money source that you haven't used on steam before.

JoeyBeanz

I see, so on steam as a whole not just on steam wallet. Thank you for clarifying.

Foaman

Right. It's if you purchase anything on steam (be that games OR wallet funds), if it's a new payment method you haven't used before on steam, you get locked out of the market for a week.

JoeyBeanz

Is this a recent issue? For the Summer Sale, I switched out the CC I normally use for a prepaid. No problems here.

NODAK

I don't know how recently they started doing it (hell they might have ALWAYS done this) but it happened to me about a month ago or so. But prepaids aren't really included because it being a prepaid card they know for certain they can get their money. It only happens when using a credit card or paypal as a new payment method, as you can open one of those fraudulently and add funds to your wallet, buy a shitload of stuff from the market. Something to do with valve not wanting to have to pay people for items they sold on the market if the people who bought them did so with fraudulently purchased wallet funds or some crap like that.

JoeyBeanz

Ah, I see. Thank you for the explanation. As much fraudulent activity (e.g. disappearing gifts) as I read about in SG's forums alone, I can't say I blame them. Hopefully I'm not affected when I switch back to my CC seeing that technically it's not a "new" payment method.

NODAK

If you have already used it on steam in the past you're fine.

JoeyBeanz

MattyMatt (9 months ago)

If you use a new payment method, you are locked out of the market for a week. You can still use the store, but not the market. I learnt that the hard way. I had a prepaid CC from work rewards used it on steam and got locked. Now I pretty much buy wallet codes :/

thecreed123 (9 months ago)

I got locked out made me so angry i can get back in on the 21st but come on!!!

Why are you so desperate to use the market?

Zrr00

so i can sell cards to get more games?

wongheungwing (9 months ago)

what is important is to open another account and buy games as gifts before the last day.

orpi (9 months ago)

better say DO NOT steal ur mothers credit card for buy games on steam.

Devil231 (9 months ago)

how so? and what you mean by new? i added my CC on Steam and i wasn't "locked" from the market

What I mean by new is when you buy a pre-paid credit card and use it to add funds to your wallet.

BlazinPhoenix666

Why not just use paypal to process all the cards?

PPG113

you've said a credit card..not a pre-paid card. those are totally different cards

bghjkl (9 months ago*)

this happened to one of my friends. It only locks you out of the community market, not the steam storefront or the mann co. store.

He posted in the thread here http://steamcommunity.com/groups/community_market/discussions/0/828935672933480371 and his funds were unlocked the next morning. It seems there is at least one valve employee looking at that thread and unlocking funds for market use.

But yeah, don't add funds to your wallet for the first time -- buy a physical steam gift card instead.

Quemical (9 months ago)

Started to use paypal and won't be able to use the market until Sunday

geekskirt (9 months ago)

wish i have heard that earlier ^^

Requisite (8 months ago)

Yup, I've been waiting for 2 weeks cause I decided I'd need more money for the sale but then the ban time got extended for another week...

doctorofjournalism (8 months ago)

I actually just did this intentionally, sold off my forgotten FIFA coins via PayPal and used that to fund my Steam wallet. Burnt myself out on trading cards during the Beta and this is the perfect excuse to stop giving a ****.

barc0de1989 (8 months ago)

Has nothing to do with CC. It's a normal protection service which happens with PayPal too.

It's either-or, simply if you use a different method of payment than you have previously

doctorofjournalism

Wrong. I always used PayPal.

barc0de1989

You aren't comprehending, we mean when you use a funding method that is different than one you have always used before. So if you've always used PayPal you won't be affected. For example, if you suddenly funded your account with your CC as opposed to your PayPal account, you too would be have your market privileges suspended.

doctorofjournalism

I've always used PayPal and I was indeed affected by it.

barc0de1989

Please be more vague

doctorofjournalism

Didn't I already say everything? I used PayPal before. Then I wanted to use PayPal again and I got the time off from the market. I never changed my payment method, yet was affected. This is why I said it doesn't matter. By my experience, if you add money to your walllet you have this week to wait. And I doubt that this was only done in my case.

barc0de1989

Toca1FTW (8 months ago*)

Hi, I'm wondering if someone has experienced my situation. I went to go buy Mark of the Ninja, but decided to use up some money in my PayPal account rather than wallet. Problem was, my billing address was blank.

It's the same paypal account I've used in the past so I don't know if re-entering my address will be fine as far as market access is concerned.

I think I last used PayPal on 16 Jul 2012, so just past a year, maybe that's why it cleared. I had thought you lost market access if you hadn't bought with external payment in a year, but thankfully it looks like I imagined that.

Tetony (8 months ago)

Thank you for the head's-up.
