So I got a Copyright Infringement notice this morning. It says, "I engaged in copying, reproducing, distributing, and/or adapting copyrighted material." The thing is, I'm not entirely sure what I've done, and I'm REALLY not sure what to do about it. My friends are telling me to keep my head down and stay quiet because normal citizens aren't usually prosecuted, but then again, you never know.

Any thoughts/advice for this big bad criminal genius?

What's your country?

What medium was the notice sent through? Email? Mail? Registered mail?

Who sent the notice? Provider? Law firm? Some guy?

Are they naming a particular work that you supposedly infringed upon?

Does it list a specific IP address? Is the IP address tied to you?

I've received emails from AT&T (ISP) and just a few minutes ago, CBS . They're rattling off a giant list of things I haven't even heard of. They have listed a specific IP address and it is tied to me.
Oh, and I live in the US.

You might want to scan your system. There is such a thing as malware using your system as a torrent host without your knowing.

If it's a letter from rightscorp (allegedly on behalf of another company) you should be ok ignoring it. They're currently facing a class action lawsuit over this kinda thing...

Wrong, the law changed in April and you CAN be prosecuted for downloading.

I got letter from my provider in which they accused me of downloading illegal content.
It had a list of some movies I downloaded. I believe one of them was for Into the Wild.
This was years ago. Downloading is still not forbidden in my country but the provider had the task to notify me.

Who sent the letter? Your question is missing some vital info.

In france I think it was :

  • first time, you receive an email,
  • second time, you received a real letter,
  • third time, they - allegedly - cut your connection, which they actually never did because it would go against the law (that sanction would prevent you from getting your mail - and as there's no technical applicable way of cutting your connection while letting you get your emails, it would never be done)

As far as I know it never worked and barely deterred people.

It could be a spoof e-mail that looks real, but is actually fake. If you have not actually downloaded any of the stuff they said and no one in your house has either, contact your ISP, though not with any numbers that would be on the e-mail. Find out from them whats going on and if its a spoof e-mail or not. If its not, you might have someone accessing your internet connection some how.

ISPs will not email. They will send it via physical mail to establish a paper trail should a suit ever arise. In addition, they will explicitly name the item(s) you have supposedly acquired illicitly. If this has come via email, it is a fake.

Oh...

if its not on paper it is most likely fake. it is pretty easy to send an email with any sender address you want.

this was funny for pranks in school 15 years ago ;) - but nowadays its just annoying because of spam and scams.

  • check if you actually did something they claim

  • check computer for viruses and malware (perhaps it was/is part of a botnet)

  • if they want money, check who/how they want it -> if it smells (paysafecard etc): fake
