I think it's shit and it needs to stop! I hate wanting a game that I can't get right now but I will miss out on a mini campaign as example (stronghold crusader 2). In the end I think it hurts the game because just for that reason I will never buy the game at full price.

Why the hell isn't my Valk getting any cosmetic gear?

Gauntlet currently the only pre order I care about.

I did too and speaking of, every store gives you different kind of pre-order bonuses that's really shitty too.

usually they eventually become available as DLC, though I don't know if it will be the same for stronghold crusader 2

I like when they include preorder-exclusive pants. Pants are important.

I completely agree with you. It not only hurts the game for the reason you mentioned, but many others. Pre-orders are so overrated these days...

Unless we're talking about useless cosmetic stuff like gold weapons or a shiny pimp hat: Complete deal breaker. Immediately puts a game on my buy-only-as-complete-edition-in-a-cheap-as-fuck-sale-or-bundle-if-at-all list.

I think a mini campaign is kinda important even if it's not long.

Pre-ordering digital games is stupid. So to get people to pre-order it, they have to make pre-ordering look slightly less stupid, so they offer exclusives.
I'm sure a lot of people still pre-order games because of this so I don't think It's hurting the game at all.

Never preorder a game. A preorder is the publisher asking you to take all the risk that the game doesn't live up to the hype, while giving you no reward. As a preorder bonus isn't a reward. It's to make you feel punished for waiting till release day to see if the advertising is accurate, an outright lie or somewhere in between.

If the preorder content is such a big deal that you won't play the game without it, don't buy it until you can get the bonus. Don't pirate it either, as whatever message you think you are sending by pirating it is unlikely to be the ones the publishers hear.

If the preorder content that is worth so much to you never becomes available at a reasonable price, then don't buy the game.

Deciding how loudly you complain about the preorder content is your choice.

I have already preordered some games.
And i will probably do it again.
It depends on the game/bonus/price/mood.

Related.

I think it's absolute shit that Batman Arkham Knight was announced to have Day One DLC, like 7 months in advance, and then it was delayed until next year, so it now has DAY ONE DLC, one year in advance. Seriously, what the fuck man. People don't even seem to mind anymore...

I'm one of the people who preordered Aliens: Colonial Marines Collector's Edition. I am living proof of why preorders can be a horrible thing.

I don't like it at all. It's fine to give a bonus and/or discount, but not if it's content exclusive to pre-orders. For instance Tomb Raider had pre-order DLC, but later they made it possible to buy it.

I also thing the Day One DLC is a load of bull. A base game should include everything before release, only after community feedback and suggestions should DLC be made to add features to the game the developers never thought about while in development.

Mortal Kombat X Has the stupidest pre-order bonus: You can play as Goro if you preorder it...

The point of pre-order bonuses is to get you to spend the full price as soon as possible regardless if the game is shit or not

it also boosts numbers that can be used later - e.g. "we sold X amount of copies opening week"

I don't care about such bonuses at all. Same with DLC's. The only additions I care about are single player campaigns/missions. But even then I'm not willing to pre-order a game just for a mission or two lol. Cheap tactics.

"Despite the fact that we have taken chunks out of this game--chunks that we will sell you, later, as part of a cash-grab--we are quite happy to take your money immediately in exchange for a game we haven't yet completed. The reason for the delay is that we are still in the process of adding in those superfluous parts of the game for which you are about to pay extra. Now, please excuse us while we laugh all the way to the bank with your money."

And the best part of this is that the bonuses wil be sold later anyway. Because exclusive means anyone can get it for a price, right?

I think Dying Light has something that should have never been a bonus for pre-ordering and that would be playing as a zombie in multiplayer.

The only ingame content you get for pre-ordering that I support is the TF2 items that come with some titles like the Total War games and the new Aliens game, It's not something you need for the game you've purchased and on top of that they tend to always have a couple of dollars in value making the purchase even cheaper.
