Read reviews. Both have their good points and lesser points.
In that range I would say an AMD 7870XT or Nvidia GTX660(Ti).

I always find their reviews quite well.

Either way you'll be happy, and wondering if the other wasn't a better choice. :)
With AMD making the video stuff for the new console generation, maybe the new generation of lazy console ports will perform better on AMD hardware. But I don't have a crystal ball. Flip a coin, see who's got a good deal, the best bonus games, etc. Good luck! :)

That's like saying Nvidia uses Forceware and AMD uses OpenCL :/

Catalyst is just the control center of Radeon Video cards, nvidia have thenr own control center. PhysX is a different thing. (PhysX is a proprietary realtime physics engine middleware SDK. It was developed by Ageia with the purchase of ETH Zurich spin-off NovodeX in 2004. Ageia was acquired by Nvidia in February 2008)

Technically no, but there is a version that is CPU independent and doesn't use the GPU at all.
In general though, not many games actually show an advantage of having it built into the video card.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_with_hardware-accelerated_PhysX_support
I have some of those games and they are all perfectly playable on my AMD HD5770. I also don't have everything turned up cause I don't have the most powerful of computers.
There are no games now that I know of that are Nvidia or AMD only. Most games that I know of include physics in the game and they play with very little difference between the 2 card types.
Basically just get what ever you can afford. I'm not fond of Nvidia myself, in the past they have released drivers that have actually killed cards and in some cases whole computers but that was years ago. While AMD has not done anything like that, they have had issues with their drivers too (drops in frame rates) and don't release updates as often as Nvidia.

I prefer cards with 2 or 3 fans. The cooling is better and generally quieter.
Personally I am looking at going for an HD7870 or HD7970 in the future. Or if they are out something in the HD8000 series. I am targeting around the 300 to 400 dollar mark.

I remember being really proud of my 5970, a double GPU card that was for a while the best graphics card out there.
I then watched comparisions to nvidias monsters and mine was still beter, running cooler and more silent, where the nvidia card was at 90+ °C and was EXTREMELY loud.
But I have an Nvidia on my notebook and I must say I really enjoy PhysX.
The question here really is.
PhysX or Eyefinity?
Plus ATI/AMD give you better hardware for the same price, there are differences in hardware usage though. ATI sort of lags a little bit when loading ressources while playing, coniniously so to say. Nvidia has bigger lags (I am not talking about seconds here, I am talking about microstuttering) but big intervals inbetween those. Plus Nvidia gets better results with worse hardware.
This is all I can say regarding this.

That question should have been posted on PC enthusiasts forum rather than SG especially considering current forum engine(no cattegories etc.) . Nonetheless it's natural that some individuals seeks computer help on gamey related forum and because we are a great community we provide for those individuals.

In that price range I usually recommend Radeons because they have usually better performance/power consumption/price ratio than their Nvidia counter-parts. For bigger budget 300-400+$ I would lean towards GeForce though. It always boils to comparison between 2 similar models and extensive price research on ebay/online stores. In that price range you have 3 options (in order of overall performance). Radeon 7850 around 150$ ,GeForce 660 GTX and Radeon 7870 around 200$. If possible aim for overcloacked version especially in case of 7850.

I used to be an Nvidia guy but for the last 4 generations (HD4xxx-HD7xxx) I've been all AMD except for my low-power applications (Tegra, ION, Geforce Mobile.)
I'd say either one is fine but right now I'd lean toward AMD. Physx in it's current implementation is a joke and is best left off even if you have Nvidia hardware. You'll get lots of good free games right now with AMD too. I've also never had an AMD/ATI card die whereas I can count the number of fried Nvidia cards I've had with the fingers on both hands, but that could have just been luck.

Nvidia's mid-end cards are too expensive for what they offer, especially the 660 and 660Ti.
I'm not from the US, but check this offer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202025

Disregarding the whole fanboyism in this thread, I'd say you'll have to find the answer for yourself. Both cards offer advantages and disadvantages that should cater to most people's needs.
Right now, Nvidia cards do have the more extended set of features with downsampling and stuff like TXAA for instance, as well as smoother Anisotropic Filtering. They might be also a bit easier on power consumption, though that depends greatly on the card.
However, AMD have caught up greatly with the 7xxx series, with a much improved AF that does not flicker nearly as much as it used to do, as well as an overall good pricing that will get a lot of bang for your buck. Add on top of that a couple of free Steam games (Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider) and Crysis 3, should be a good incentive.
Personally, I'd go for the latter, but it's up to you.

As of now, the biggest bang for the buck are the 7850/7870, the 7870 being my preference, in comparison to the NVIDIA counterpart, the mid range like those GPUS are a bit heavier on the wallet.

Go with an Radeon. They have been outperforming the nVidia cards with similar prices, and the Never Settle deals or whatever they're called also get you a ton of games, which saves you money buying games.
However, a single brand is never the best option. Although AMD has been outperforming nVidia big time in the mid range, there are still exceptions to the rule. Read reviews and don't just go with nVidia because it has PhysX. AMD has TressFX, which completely bombs on nVidia cards (while the AMD card gets 60fps, the nVidia counterpart gets 8fps)

I went with Nvidia for several generations until I got my recent Radeon's. I'd say to go with Nvidia. In my experience ATI has buggier drivers, more inter-frame latency (stuttering) even with a high frame rate.
At the time I bought into the benchmarks and reviews that said that AMD was better in the midrange etc... Unfortunately pure FPS is a poor measure of actual performance. I'll admit that I'm a bit of a power user though so my experiences and pickiness might not reflect the general population.

My EVGA GTX 285 fried 2 weeks ago.
Been using nvidia for the past few years.
I was told that Radeon is better and costs less
However, searching through google gives mixed results.
What would be the best option for a 100$-200$ gaming GPU?
And whats a better bang for the buck? nvidia or radeon?
Is there even any major difference between the two?
EDIT:
I would like to thank everyone for helping with opinions and tips.
Especially darko55 for dedicating alot of time explaining and researching things
I think I will go with NVIDIA after all. Especially since it has Physx.
Probably GTX 560 or 650.
EDIT2:
Damn, with the flow of new comments about Radeons being superior and cheaper I'm tempted to try radeon since I've always been with nvidia.
And I'm almost tempted to try to cook the card back to life like MerkabahPT suggested, sounds crazy though.
