So I have the Legacy of Kain Pack from Steam, which as far as I can tell contains every game in the series other than the original Blood Omen from the Playstation 1, and I have a quick question. I've never played any of these games but am looking forward to playing through them. My question is, should I get the original Blood Omen and play it first before the remainder of the titles on Steam? I can get it from the PSN store for $5.99, and I assume it plays as well as buying the game on actual disc. Thanks!

The LOK series are about Raziel and Kain, it's another story. BO are about Kain. If you can, just play both.
I'm a huge fan of the games, if you want to know more hit up the wiki, there's plot and a whole lot of stuff there too!

Yes, Blood Omen is the first game in the series and gets you acquainted with the LoK universe. However, gameplay is radically different from later games. The graphics of Blood Omen are merely acceptable to fans of old-school RPG's, so its saving grace is its powerful, emotional story...one of the best you'll encounter in all role playing.

It's not necessary, but I would recommend it. The Blood Omen series is about Kain, the Soul Reaver series is about Raziel, and the Legacy of Kain games (actually only one, Defiance) is about both of them.

LOK:BO is the first one chronologically, but I played it last. It's useful to know the backstory behind Kain, but most of it you get to know from the other games.

Should you buy the original Legacy of Kain on PSN? Hell yeah you should, it's a good game.
Should you buy it before you play Soul Reaver? I was going to originally say it's up to you. However, the more I think about it, the more I would suggest you play the original first. The first game really isn't THAT long if you're not trying to find all the secrets an whatnot.

As a huge fan of the series (they are indeed my favorite games) I can tell you that you don't miss anything story-wise. Most of the important events of Blood Omen 1 are told in Soul Reaver 2. The game is great thought, even if today it feels dated.

The complete series are called Legacy of Kain, and it goes like this:

  • In Blood Omen games you play as Kain, starting his "life" as a vampire.
  • In Soul Reaver games you play as Raziel. Kain does appear in these, but you never control him.
  • In Defiance (last game on the series) you play as both Raziel and Kain.

The good thing about the complete series is the great story (seriously, one of the best in videogame history). Maybe Blood Omen 2 is not that good in that regard, but is still better that what games call "story" today.

I hope you enjoy the collection as I did. I play all the games at least once per year, I really love them :D

^This.

With one exception...
"Most of the important events of Blood Omen 1 are told in Soul Reaver 2."
This is exactly the reason I WOULD recommend playing through Blood Omen.

Also, the entire series has some of the best voice acting of all time, IMO.

P.S. Dluk, I like your icon.

Well... yeah. If it were me I prefer to play the games in the order they came out. I'd go with Blood Omen first without doubt. But I feel that it was appropiate to inform TC about the events in Blood Omen beign told in Soul Reaver 2, just in case.

Thanks for the P.S.! That avatar was taken from the credits of Soul Reaver 1, I got a screenshot of the concept art and took Kain's face as avatar long time ago :D

Well, i cosider myself a fan of the series, Soul Reaver 2 is the best game ever created, but i must confess that i never finished the original, though i don't even know why, the gameplay is different, but not bad in any way, the world of Nosgoth is as awesome as ever, but i'm just getting bored. I'd say it's up to you, you'll know what happened there in Soul Reaver 2 anyway.
