I only have Napoleon, but I played most of them when they were free for a weekend a while back, and I really enjoyed Empire. I also spent a lot of time on Medieval II. I think they are all pretty good.

I played the first Medieval Total War a lot before it comes to Steam, but out of all , my vote goes to Shogun 2 Total War and its expansion.

Hands down original Shogun. It's short enough for repetition to not really set in, and the AI seem to at least be able to fight back (don't know how much it cheats though). Rome 1 would probably be near the top, if it was not for the AI. I should not be able to easily beat far far larger armies of better quality troops, but I am, and it's not because I'm a tactical genius, it's because the AI believes in the "Bang your head against a brick wall repeatedly because last time it did not work, but this time it might break" strategy (basically, it does more or less the same thing every time, making it very predictable and easy to beat).

First Rome has a special place in my heart, loved the heck out of that game. Later on I have played Medieval 2 and greatly enjoyed it as well, Medieval is a bit better in my opinion (I do love medieval times). Never really got into newer titles, did not like Empire due to the settings and Shogun 2 had too many new mechanics for me to really get into the game again. I want to give it a try in the future; however TW games are really time demanding. Have yet to buy R2.

E: Alright, I have begun downloading S2 again, really feel like giving it another try!

The first Rome is the best, closely followed by both Medievals and the first Shogun. Empire was meh and Shogun 2 was pure crap. Haven't tried the latest games but apparently the series is steadily going downhill.

I think I'd have to vote Shogun 2 or Shogun. I think the games after Shogun 2 (haven't tried Attila yet) try to juggle too much, and the games before Shogun 2 are either too simple or simply jumbled. That said, I have nostalgia for the original Shogun, and that's a powerful powerful thing. I hear high praise for the first Rome, but never got into it myself.

Definitely Medieval 2 (though Shogun 2 is really great), it just has great authentic medieval atmosphere like no other game in series.

My opinion:
(Only played Rome2, Rome/BI, Shogun 2, Medieval 2/Kingdom, Empire/Napoleon
Land battles: Rome 2 > Rome/BI > Shogun 2 > Medieval 2/Kingdom > Empire/Napoleon
Sea battles: Rome 2 > Shogun 2 > Empire/Napoleon > Rome/BI/Medieval 2/Kingdom <--Totally the best sea battles ever. Totally
Campaign Overview: Rome 2 > Shogun 2 > Rome/BI > Empire/Napoleon > Medieval 2/Kingdom
Multiplayer: No idea.
Cut-scenes/Speech before battle: Rome/BI > Everything else.
Agent cut-scenes: Shogun 2 > Everything else
Diplomacy: Not sure but last would be Rome/Medieval 2/Kingdom.
Horse charges: Rome/BI - Them wrecking balls.
Cheap tactics: Rome - Them pikes in front of gates.
Frustrating moments besides bugs: Medieval 2 - Them inquisition and my dreadful generals.
AI Difficulty: Not sure.

Shogun was my first Total War Love, but Rome become my favorite. The game is amazing, and the learning curve is smooth, also have a lots of "new" cool features compared with Medieval.

Been playing them since Medieval TW, played them all except Attila. The best is kinda of a tie between Medieval 2, which, beyond being well made in most regards(and still holding up graphics wise) is also modable as hell and has a ton of total conversions that will give anyone hundreds of hours of fun beyond what the base game will and Shogun 2 which is gorgeous, added new mechanics and a lot of depth to the shallow stuff added in Empire/Napoleon(like research), has awesome naval combat, great land battles and cool character development trees.

As a side note tho, if we're going by nostalgia Rome TW definitely takes the cake, and i think it's the same for most long time fans of the series. It also, at least when playing a roman faction, had the best done learning curve yet, easing you into how the faction and the game works and then giving you access to the advanced units via a historical event.
