By the looks of it, they released the game to get more funds. They are still probably working on the game, going to update it as time goes on (or apparently sell it in multiple installments). Still, selling an incomplete product is bad for future business. They should have released it as a preorder demo. sucks to be them.

That's the most bizarre thing. Steam is set up to be able to do exactly what they needed to do, but instead they just abandon it and toss it up half done. Disgraceful.

well reading some of the comments. I'm gonna go with the conspiracy lol.
They had a publisher so it is most likely true.
Devs might had been fired after kickstarter failure that's why they didn't even considered early access. Then selling it on steam was just about the publisher trying to get their money back.
Kinda sad actually about this, I saw this on kickstarter and just glanced over the video. Was willing to back but then I saw that there are few backers so I just disregarded it.

Which instead will be met with copious amounts of refund requests. Shame really, looked decent.

Because that would indicate continued work, which quite possibly won't happen from what I've read in the comments in the related forum.

I'll consider it when it gets bundled or completed, one or the other, but otherwise, it will never go further than my wishlist.

The sad thing is that it's apparently quite good up to that point. 'Tis a shame.

Sadly, I already have enough unfinished games in my backlog. Why add one that won't be finished? :P

Maybe they we're hoping people like us would only play 2 hours and get distracted by something else and never realize the game isn't done :P

It's a sad story, because if the rest of the game is decent, that means that someone really did put a lot of work into it, then got cut off for whatever reason.
But obviously somebody screwed up. There's appropriate ways to raise money to complete your game, and "pretend it's finished, hope nobody says anything" is not one of them.

It's just a matter of time before it gets bundled.

After reading through a lot of post here, on the Steam forum and on reddit, I have to say that it really sounds like a bad idea to release the game in the current state.
I wonder how the devs/publishers are planing to appease the buyers.

Appease the buyers? I think this is more of an "once you have their money, you never give it back" deal. If there's enough of an outcry Valve might refund, like they did with The War Z, although this doesn't look nearly as bad as that (where the game wasn't just terrible but the developers were actively being asshats).

There are different methods to appease someone, in this case they could also fix the game until it's actually finished.
But since the game is already done in the eyes of the devs, I'd say it's unlikely that a lot of content will be added (and they already said they will re-do the ending).
Well, let's grab some popcorn and see how the story evolves ;)

Both had failed Kickstarters but tried to make a full game anyways and failed.
Dark Matter simply didn't reach it's goal, ran out of funds and released the game as-is.
Day One: Garry wasn't going to reach the goal until the CEO put in his own money to force it to, but that's not real fundraising it's just paying an expense with a loan.

they don't know the game is incomplete... developer of course haven't announced it and since greenlight, there's a lot of new indie games on Steam every day and only few people, usually youtubers, are reviewing them so you don't expect to buy incomplete game because you trust the developer...

Can someone explain briefly ... Why did this game.. uncompleted .. with No money according to devs.. end up on Steam .. no early access and DID NOT have to go through greenlight? .. Im sure I'm missing something ...
..it even has steam trading cards..

The developers ran out of time and funds to finish the game, as the game was up as a kickstarter. Unfortunately, you aren't really missing anything. It's just that Valve didn't properly run through the game to see the end product, so one could say Valve's partially to blame. But really it all boils down to the developers. I sympathize them to a certain extent but they should have notified the players that due to shortage of funds and time, they couldn't "complete" the game, but could've left it for the players to decide if they still wanted to buy the game.

They were self publishing at first, hence the Kickstarter, but when that failed they packed up what they had and sold it to Iceberg Interactive. Since it had an established Steam publisher now, it was allowed to skip Greenlight and can go right to Steam.
I hope Iceberg is held responsible by Steam, as this is abuse of what Steam allows them to do.

It is pretty hard to know if a game is decent before you play it yourself. Opinions vary pretty strongly, and the only way to get a good feel for whether you'll enjoy it would be to watch a lets play. Reviews only give you a rough outline and can be pretty deceptive of the games actual feel and quality. Sure, they can catch the big game-killers like this "END!" thing, but that assumes the reviewer plays far enough in.
Why would somebody blindly buy a game? I dunno, maybe they're stupid enough to trust the gaming industry to provide full products?

So you expect valve to hire an army of play testers to go through ever game they release, even just under the green light program, thats and awfully lofty goal.
Hell, even studios like EA who make and publish the game end up releasing shitty cash grabs like Sim City. To expect a digital retailer to play test each game they add to their catalog is akin to having say Amazon test every item they sell, or for sake of equal comparison just the games they list on their store page. Its laughable.
Personally, I blame the idiots that voted for it to be green lit before Id blame steam for selling it.

Garry's Incident: Day one and it's already a Dark Matter waiting for Takedown. Red Sabre would be preferable.

So, as some of you may have heard, Dark Matter was released on Steam a few days ago despite not meeting their Kickstarter goals. It's important to note they have no indication of the game's current state nor is the game in a "Early Access" state.
This is what happens about 4 hours in: Clicky.
Now, it may look like an old NES "The End" type of kill screen, but this happens right after getting a new weapon in the middle of the plot. There are even unachievable achievements based on killing enemies that never appear!
The devs have tried to pass this off as a "smaller scale" game due to their failed Kickstarter, but it's pretty obvious they just pulled the plug once the funds dried up. There was also an "Episodic Content" excuse that makes little sense as the game is not marketed or sold in this way at all! Further Reading/Source
Needless to say, buyers we're not amused.
It's a shame as the game looks like it would be fun but I for one would never drop $15 on something like this. Thoughts?
Update! Looks like Steam has caught on and has removed the option to buy the game. There is a warning message on the store page that reads "Notice: Currently there is a known issue at the end of the game. The developer is aware of the issue and they are working on a patch as a solution."
It was a bug all along I guess! :D
