Your thoughts on GTFO?
I just said this in a group chat minutes ago:
5:37 PM - jbondguy007: I still can't believe that stupid fucking name you know
5:37 PM - jbondguy007: Game looks decent but the name looks like what some "hip" PR employee thought up

Whatโs in a name? Really, what does it matter? I canโt think of a time when a name solely turned me off from a product, no matter how goofy.
Perhaps this stems from my historical liguistic studies, but a name is just a temporary label.

I didn't say it turned me off, just that it's a stupid-ass name. Like I said "Game looks decent".

So, you're saying that Romeo would, were he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title.
Juliet, is that you? :)
(sorry, couldn't resist letting your opening sentence unnoticed)

Kidding aside, Shakespeare is actually a perfect example of the liquidity of language within our own common era.

Indeed. Language being tightly bound to culture, it has always been by nature ever-evolving, the meaning associated to a specific label often temporary (as you well stated). Now more than ever, as a result of communication being global and ubiquitous... thus forcing language to be in that state of fast evolution (or arguably, degradation, considering the distorting popularity of abbreviations and verbal memes). Alas, poor Language. I knew her, DoctorOfJournalism, a fellow of infinite expression, so full of meaning!
But focusing on the initial topic, I agree with you in that the name does not in any way reflect an actual body of content. Were it so, and a few popular games would not be so popular ^^ And GTFO does seem quite appealing, judging from the trailer, the name being a quirky yet fitting call to its overall theme.

I wonder how many people would remember the name of yet another horde based FPS, if it didnt had a name like that.

I second this. My reaction when telling my brother about this game: "Is it bad that I'm interested in a game with such a stupid name?"
The game looks gold, like Aliens meets Left for Dead. But the name, man, the name. If a friend asks what I'm playing, what am I going to say? GTFO? That's just... poor planning.

Made me laugh. :D

The same reaction people had when first told to โgoogle that online.โ That is, of course, until it became a part of common nomenclature. Language is liquid.

I give it 6 weeks tops before everyone leaves it.
Assuming it gets players in the first place.
Everyone and their mother are making "competitive and/or co-op" shooters now, because if Overwatch and PUBG did it, it means everyone can make a billion bucks with a random similar online game.
Or not. As the creators of Titanfall learnt. Or Battleborn. Or For Honor (anyone remembering this game's existence?). Or Division. Or that GitS game. Or any fucking co-op/competitive shooter in the past years. Heck, I do not even hear a single word about Quake Champions for weeks now, and it was made by id, the guys who fucking invented the thing.

This game doesn't compare to any of those really. Its closest comparisons are Payday and Left 4 Dead, and it looks like its trying to blend elements of those two together, along with some Aliens vibes to create a delicious hardcore FPS smoothie

It is a marginal point. Every online shooter sub-genre has its "definite" game now, and we have seen possible contenders fail and fail and fail over and over every time, because the user base is generally too comfortable to leave or invested too much time/money to start over with some other game.

Sorry, for a second I thought you said Titanfall was a "random online game" when the original was a refreshment in the MP FPS genre and the sequel had a superb campaign.
I also don't really understand how GTFO is in any way comparable to Overwatch (??) or PUBG. All they have in common is first-person view and guns. This game seems like it's going to be similar to Left 4 Dead (2) and Killing Floor (2) and those games still have active communities.

I'm personally interested and always looking for a decent co-op game(though having no friends I need to rely on pugs) but one thing that worries me atm is.. progression systems.. its so easy to get it wrong to the point of making me not worth bothering much(still wonder how I manage to stick with Vermintide to the point of beating base game missions on Cataclysm).

Looks interesting.
My first thought when I saw the title was "what a stupid name" but concerning the Aliens vibe it fits.

Seems pretty cool! But it I'm afraid it will soon become a DLC-fest, hopefully not a pay-to-win like some Payday 2 DLCs: the great shotguns, armor piercing ammos, the automatic sniper rifle, grenade launcher, rocket... etc.
So yeah, I will wait for a heavily discounted version in the distant future most likely.

Atmosphere / look of the game reminds me of the first F.E.A.R. somehow. That's a good thing. Could be fun, hope they launch with good working match-making or everyone will hate on it early, give it a negative first-impression for everyone else, and it will die a slow death. (Also, nice discovery of the premise! :))

I wasn't a fan of Payday 2 (crappy engine, terrible stealth, average at best shooter) so if this game has any elements from that then it's already looking bad. I ignore hype because we all know there's been too many disappointments. I hope the game is good because I love co-op shooters but I won't be surprised if it's not.

Well, I just hope the coop will actually play a role in the game. Too many fps coop games feel like single player campaigns with slightly more enemies. The coop aspect almost never really matters. I would love to see a game where having two players is actually necessary to finish a game or at least drastically changes how things play out.
Anything is fun with friends, it would be nice to have something meaningful now.

Seeing as we'll never get that third installment of Left 4 Dead, this is definitely on my radar, but expectations are low. Same goes for Hunt: Showdown and Strange Brigade (albeit 3rd person). Hopefully at least one of them will get it right.

It looks interesting and its made by the game designer who made Payday 1 and 2, so in a coop perspective they should know what they are doing. Lets just wait and see how it will work out, but i hope it will be good so i can play a new coop game with friends :D (well, need to find some new friends before tht, but still)

Gameplay Trailer
Steam Page
"GTFO is a hardcore 4 player cooperative game, with a focus on team play and atmosphere. It features procedural gameplay scenarios through its Expedition Director, edge-of-your-seat suspense, team based puzzle solving and high intensity combat."
This game looks like a blast imo. The cooperative heist elements from Payday mixed with Left 4 Dead in an actual co-op horror setting. I combed through the trailer frame by frame and uncovered something cool, you can see the results here. Got a Retweet out of one of the devs too.
