3DO demise meant loss of High Heat Baseball. Played it for another 10 yrs after that, because nothing ever matched it. M$ bought the rights at 3DO auction, but never did anything with it.

Wow... so many. Videogame developping is getting more expensive year by year I suppose.

Still I was shocked when they closed Irrational Games, THQ, 2K Australia (just 1 game I think)

now i'm sad. Westwood, NWC, 3DO, and many more.
this should be on the list, since it is not the old microprose! http://www.microprose.com/
they made this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Magic and hence are the best company ever existed!
(i know about WoM, waiting for the bugs to get sorted, and the price to drop)

i'm going to cry in the corner now.

Weren't Microprose the guys who made the original X-Com as well?

We should all cry over Westwood... old C & C games are probably among the best RTS games ever made.

Not sure about X-com. to lazy to check (can't read with all the tears).
but Westwood made Dune 2. which is before C&C. and much better in my opinion. can't play it now anymore, controls are too hard...
MoM i still play every few years

Published it at least.
Also, several good-for-their-time sims, and every Sid Meier game since he co-founded toe company, until he split off and reformed under Firaxis.

I'm not sure if that is less or more depressing.

Fun fact: A member of the previous government here in Sweden actually had a "degree" from one of those institutes.

The later would have made him really popular among German tourists, but sadly, he was just a human who held one of the most important positions in the Swedish government.

Surprised there aren't more.

Also : " Video game developers and publishers work in a volatile market with demanding customers and slim profit margins"
I dunno, there's a lot of crap that companies get away with in this industry that they would get absolutely slaughtered for in others.

Probably doesn't include the crappy single person indie 'companies' that release one game then give up though. :P

I was gonna say Black Isle studios is what pains me the most but apparently they got reopened it 2012.
Sadly Interplay doesn't have the Fallout licence anymore. :(

It's not the same key people working there though. Most of those seem to be either working for Obsidian or inExile.

If you want to take a slightly wonky Tangent Troika was founded by former Interplay employees. One ended up at InXile and later Turtle Rock and the other two at Obsidian - one via Carbine and one via Blizzard.

Given the close ties I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Black Isle/Interplay staff later ended up at Bioware either
