Malwarebytes anti-ransomware module is causing this kind of problems on newest windows patch, try to disable it and check if it gets better.
If that doesn't help, try running sfc and dism to check if something is wrong with windows core files:
- sfc /scannow
- DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

I think from last update not fully functionable or stable windows version but system working correctly, in time when go to start menu about 10 min loop windows explorer process like relaunch but when go to desktop working correctly i don't know but think requires wait another stable windows version

Check the task manager if your disc usage is going at 98-100% and then you go to services.msc and disable windows update. I had the problem with win 8 back in the day so it might not be the same issue in win10. Also this is temporaly at best because even if you disable it windows stealthily re-enable it without you being able to do anything about it, but it fixed my pc for 2 months

Did you get the "2004" update? That is supposed to be broke as hell. I stopped updates for mine, I'm still in 19xx

Make sure your windows is installed on the SSD or a 7200 RPM HDD. Also disable all background apps you don't use, especially the telemetries ones.
First time i got my gaming laptop it would take a full minute to open any program until i disabled everything running in the background(radio, calandar, windows notifications, etc)
Also if you have any antivirus, uninstall it, windows defender is good enough and it won't conflict with it.

Did a fresh restore of Windows 10 on two of my computers... kept all personal documents...
Work beautifully now. I think a few years of use put too much running in ram behind the scenes...

Disable Windows Search service. It'll dramatically decrease your disk usage. Also it's always a good idea to install a fresh new Windows with final updates(not 20xx version, at least not yet).
Other than that, I'm still using 1909 version. I'll wait a bit longer to install 20xx versions. It is not so stable so far.
Windows 10 has issues with HDD and if you don't have an SSD, I'm sorry but you'll never have great performance.

Having same issues, recently update after update PC started to get slower and slower, I disabled prefetch / superfetch, it helped a bit, but it's still not as fast as in the past, sadly I don't remember when it started.

im not using win 10 but those who ask me about problems i normally notice thedisk usage is @100%
and they didnt have SSD

The only time I had unexplained slowdown issues was when I used to have a mechanical drive and Windows would sneakily run defragmentation or indexing crap without asking me first (stupid default settings).
Apart from that, it all boils down to: are you sure you're not installing any junkware? For instance, more and more software that you install will configure themselves to automatically start at Windows startup. Notably, as far as I remember, game-related stuff such as Steam, Epic, GeForce Experience, etc. I'm always impressed, whenever I go help a "friend" with their computer, by the amount of crap that runs at startup (and the consequent amount of icons they'll tolerate in the notification area of the task bar)

The new may 2020 update seem to have created issues and microsoft acknowledged it. Your current issue could be related to that. Can you check what's your OS version ?

Yesterday when i created this discussion and seeing (many) more had the same issues with windows, i went manually (with windows upgrade assistant) to 1909 since the normal update thing just kept failing, There is 1 cumulative update KB4560960 for 1909 pending, not sure if it's safe to download.
What version i had before i don't know, maybe 1903?
In windows updates it also shows 2004 for weeks now but it says it's not ready for my pc to download.
Through the windows insiders program though about 2 months ago i tried that 2004 but it also felt it made my pc slow, so why i restored my backup and i am afraid we are eventually forced to install that, you can only delay an update for 30 days.
But probably they are holding back because they know there are many problems with their updates.
After the 1909 upgrade it looked to start okay although it did showed some video stuttering later on, but today on a fresh boot (knock on wood) so far it's going good watching a tv show, unpacking 2 downloads, and running 1 download.
Although not played a game yet with it too (which i did yesterday, and most of the time simple not really demanding indie games).
Well seems some things still tend to hang and almost impossible to close through task manager, icons disappear on the bottom bar.

1903 is safe as well as 1909, 2004 is troublesome and microsoft blocked it already from auto updating on any pc till they fix issues with it.
Have you tried a different media player other than windows default one to play movies? Maybe it's something to do with the codec?
Also play some youtube, and games, see if you experience any issue. Do check windows event management log and check if you see any unusual activities or failures there when you launch media player to watch a movie

Codec packs are a known source for problems and especially K-lite. Any modern player like MPC-HC, VLC etc doesn't have any need for them.

You should install the media player codec pack for the movies and tv app built in on windows 10.
Also do this -
open run command prompt with administrator privilege, and type this command '' sfc /scannow ''
If you see no files are replaced or no errors, then it's not an issue with any system files being corrupted/missing/deleted etc
If you see some are fixed/ replaced, then restart your pc and you are good to go

ah, then it's tricky. Try uninstalling the codec pack, and use windows default media player to play videos, see if that helps in any way.

It's not happening in windows media players alone (haven't been watching much with those lately), it's also youtube in a browser (i watch a new soap like 5 times a week) but in the other hours a very old one..
Which might be also think nvidia player driver.
I just atleast switched in nvidia to go for permance over quality, i used to do that for a long time, dunno why it is switched back.

okay, you should check if there are any known issue on the nvidia forum of the latest driver thread, there are always a hotfix dropped there for any issues after an update occur, till they combine it with their upcoming driver update.

No, i make a clean backup first and then make one with all the programs i use and tweak everything to how i want it, and then make another backup, but that will take pretty much take the whole sunday (did 4 hours now) then i can see results.

Well saturday unexpectedly i was kinda busy reinstalling till 5:00... i thought well less work to do sunday, turned out to be more then i thought, but around 14:00 because of a few minor annoyances that happened (which i could haved lived with it), but i chosen to restart all over again, before the 1909 update would keep failing, now it installed without a hitch and monday i was done.
I am suprised actually how much programs i got installed (44 and that's not even the game clients), but offcourse i turned off as much as possible at startup, there are 11 (but it includes some windows stuff like bluetooth, the usb thingie and windows defender) so really its even less..
This time I also skipped some asus/intel driver things like chipset stuff and wan (since i am using ethernet anyway), some things i even barely knew what it really did, and no HD audio from Geforce, maybe some things just got in the way with eachother.
And i found out there was a new bios update from february this year that also apparently makes improvement in system speeds.
Only thing is i bought one of those lifetime malwarebytes licenses and they tell you to deactivate it which i did, but it still says it's been used too much and since the sellers don't give you the password to the account, you can't deactivate things plus the seller is just ignoring me offcourse. I got a legal version of kaspersky and it's the same thing sometimes you still just have to manually deactive computers.
But while normally it wouldn't work anymore since they are on it like sharks, unlike a microsoft with their products, for now i found a version that did work cracked, so far..
So far it's going great. Now just fearing that 2004 update a bit, but we will see.

Mine's slow as molasses in Antartica in the middle of winter, but typically when doing something that involves windows explorer (ie, opening a folder, doing a 'save as' or 'open') - like 30 minutes of frozen explorer windows. I have an NVidea card too, btw. Everything's up to date and virus-free. Hard drive is like 2% fragmented. I did a disk scan (through windows) and that said everything was ok, BUT when I did a drive scan at startup (before windows even starts, somewhere around when you have the option to enter the bios screen) it located a number of issues along the lines of my hard drive is physically starting to cr@p out. I haven't yet replaced the physical drive, but that's my plan moving forward.
I mention the nvidea card because on my laptop i just happened to have the one single card out of all the cards offered by all the manufacurers that has this one bug that prevents it from effectively running a whole host of programs that came out afterward that I would have used for work. :(

I had so many BSoD (Black screens of death, not blue. But just as deadly - Windows completely goes down and all you can do is hard shut down and restart) when I was keeping Windows 10 up to date. It was so bad that sometimes, just having the pc on for 20 minutes, loading no programs at all except what loads at startup, would result in a BSoD. Using a browser? Could BSoD within 5 minutes of loading the browser. It was my worst experience with a pc in my life. It was true pc hell.
Then I started doing the exact opposite. I now keep Windows 10 updated to the oldest version that's still "supported." Since doing that, I have had NO problems like this. The only time I get a crash is if I end up not restarting the pc for much longer than I really should. (You can delay updates indefinitely by setting your internet connection to metered. From my experience I have to say I highly recommend doing that).
With how Microsoft treats Windows 10 updates--not doing the kind of quality checking that they used to on older versions of Windows--if you keep Windows 10 up to date you are a lab rat testing their updates for them. Their beta testing does not catch enough problems for keeping Windows 10 up to date to be reliable is what I have seen.

Some might say it's dumb but i got UAC completely down, and classic shell to make the start menu atleast look like windows 7 again.

doxbox emulates the whole dos environment (like for running games that needs a system unoccupied by Win), whereas I needed just some extra functionality (i wanted to copy files but only keep the file with the larger filesize when they have the same filename)

Y'all doing some weird shit on your PC's wtf. Okay so first off - GTX 1080, R5 1600(waiting for 4th gen to come out to upgrade), 16GB RAM, 500GB Samsung 970 NVMe(for games that require faster reading speeds in order to reduce loading times), 250 GB 850 EVO SSD(For windows), 1TB HDD WD Blue. That's about it for PC specs. Then I have only the free version of malware bytes installed and I just keep it in the background, only occasionally do some scans. I have disabled quite a few of the windows effects and other such " fancy " stupid stuff and animations. And I seriously don't have any issue with slow downs or anything else usually, I can literally fire up anything without any issues, no weird lags or low fps for unknown reasons. However when I start up games I do turn off a lot of unnecessary programs on my PC, just to make sure I'm getting everything out of it, like I even turn off malware bytes so that weirdo ain't gonna bother me during my sessions. Nor do I get any blue screens or crashes either. Like AT ALL. I'm running the latest version of Windows 10 Pro fully licensed. You should indeed do some checks on your PC, or make a clean new windows installation, that might fix your issues. However I would seriously advise you to test your CPU, GPU and RAM, as there might be some issue there, also try paying attention to your task manager, if you have more than one screen put it on the side and when you notice something weird, do check it out. An year ago I had an issue with weird slowdowns and freezes, then I just pulled it out and set in on the side, saw that HDD usage was going crazy. Then turned the thing causing that off through the Registry, it was something about some update checking or whatever exactly it was, nothing too crucial. Like look up some windows set up guides on Youtube - For example TechYesCity is the person I check out when having to turn off useless W10 stuff, since there is A LOT OF IT.

Try MWB free version. Hopefully it will fix things for you. And if you have paid version, don't use real time security. It does tend to make things messy.

My pc is 2 years old and all was manageable but now starting to get ridiculous, are there more here? It makes videos stutter, steam crashing, waiting minutes on stuff (with a i7-8700k processor, 2080TI card and 16gb ram).
If you google there actually have been updates going on for months, that confirmed it (and later updates that "should fix" it,)
Seems the poll does show if correct that 1/3th does have problems too.

I am guessing for some different updates work better then for others, like for some 1909 might work, and others 2004, but that this is definitely a structural windows update problem rather then some hardware thing. Was also hoping especially to see more people would experience the same.
I did go to 1909 and it seemed to work for a little while, but then the video stutter came again (although less), which gets me to another point, maybe couldn't it (also) be latest nvidia drivers too? Anyone feel free to pitch on that.
Tell us if you got problems (or not) what update you are using, maybe we can sort it out together, come to a solution.
