Congrats! It can be pretty tough so don't feel too bad. I had an old thread now closed, but you can still read it, that had a lot of strategies and advice from others. If you want to get some tips to make the game a little easier next time, it might be a good place to go.

I'll have a look.
I made some serious errors in certain games, such as destroying enemy ships while my elite mantis fighters were onboard, or not having enough missiles for the boss...
It's really very random. This time I got to the end boss again with the starting three-shot laser, but thankfully also with enough missiles and a fire bomb weapon.

I won on my first run. And then my second run.
Do I really pwn that much, or is the game really that nice and easy?

Nope. Just got lucky, I guess. And watched some YouTube let's plays before starting =P
Try 1: Kestrel A (obviously), Shields, Stealth as soon as possible and tons of cheap lasers.
Try 2: Osprey A, Shields + Defense Drone II and the final boss is a piece of cake.

"Tons of cheap lasers" just won't happen if the game doesn't give them to you. I've had lots of playthroughs where I haven't been offered ANY weapons - no loot, nothing sold in stores. So good luck beating the boss with the standard laser and missile ;)

There are usually 2-3 stores in each sector. What are the chances none of them sell you a nice weapon.

Finding them can be a problem. Sometimes the stores are in awkward locations. Silly me though, I didnt even realise I could sell stuff until playthrough #5 (which meant all early playthroughs I'd been quite hard-up on cash!).
As soon as I got the Engi ship I beat the game though. That ion gun makes the first few sectors a breeze.

I got almost to the end sector on my first playthrough but it deleted my savegame before I had a chance to finish it. I really like the game though so next time I play I am going to see if I can finish it in one gaming session, which shouldn't be too hard.

Congrats ! I bought the game very recently (when I was $2,50 on the Humble Store) not knowing if I was going to like it, and it's one of the best purchases I made in the last months.
I've played roughly 5 hours so far and stupidly died on sector 7 on my last playthrough. It's kinda hard, but not frustrating in my opinion, even if you clearly have to count on luck. Well, I'm playing on normal anyway, maybe I should try easy mode ?

It is pretty tricky, you need a bit of time to figure out what does and does not work for you and your ship and then there's the luck element. Took me about 8 hours to beat it on easy.
I've learned that I'm terrible at dealing with boarding parties, not enough mantis crew. :D

i do both :-). first i close the attacking crew in a room without air. then i see wich door they attack for escape. I move my crew in the next room waiting for them. You should have a snail in your crew for view the movement of the enemy crew in a nebula and a mantis for beat them up

Well Rogue likes are generally hard. It took me like 10 hours to beat FTL, 20 for BoI and 35 for DoD. They're all supposed to be hard.

Yeah, the game is pretty hard at first but it gets easier the more you play because you get better at it. I'm playing on Normal now and it's not any harder for me than when I just started playing on easy. Whenever I play on easy now it's just cakewalk and I barely ever fail anymore.
Also, a big factor for me was to learn how to defeat the final boss. I had no trouble getting to him in the beginning but he always owned me :P

it took me 9 hours, with Engi A. It was actually really easy, because I made it really hard in the previous sectors, taking a lot of risks, and refusing some tempting situations. I also unlocked 2 ships in that run (and almost a 3rd, but that rock ship was really unlucky xD)

2 hours and a half with the Zoltan ship I believe.

My first win was somewhere around 10 hours, now beaten it about 4 times (twice with Torus, once with Fed A and once with Kestrel, in that order.)

There's always SOMETHING. Last night I was doing well in Fed A, but I had no missiles or bombs. Relying on the artillery beam meant that I never managed to get enough power for shields 4, and I died at the second boss phase - there was nothing I could do to stop his drones.

Hit stealth when they come over. They only appear for a little while.

After 20 hours and 22 games - I finally managed to beat FTL on easy! What an incredible achievement!
Do I really suck that much, or is the game really that evil and hard?
