I play Half life in 1999 and that was the best game that I've ever see at that time. Totally change the videogames, at that time. Graphics, enemies IA, movie-like story telling, ...
Half life 2 did the same in 2004, superb graphics, physics, awesome story.
Now, almost 14 years later since the 1st one and 9 from the second one, of course the age counts, but still. I played Black Mesa a few months ago and still awesome. I'm replaying HL2 right now and still awesome.
The 3rd it's impossible that will fill the hype, because they have to do the best game of this decade.

It was the greatest game at the time. Today the game is still excellent, although you may fail to see what is so "great" about that. One of the things that made it overwhelming was the narrative and the plot which was delivered without any cutscenes or talking of the protagonist.
Bishock came a few years later and, now when I think about it, tried the same thing too: barely no cutscenes, and the protagonist spook only once sentence at the beginning. of course it become a big success, also because of his great twist.

I enjoyed both games and the expansions / episodes.

Forced myself to play the first one, didn't enjoy it one bit. Played a bit of the second one, was pretty much the same garbage except that now it had a gravity gun. Never finished it, probably never will. The shooting is bad, the puzzles are meh at best. The story...I still don't know if the game has a story to begin with. It might have been a good game when it was released, but that time is long gone. People are expecting way too much from hl3 or hl2 ep 3 and I'm confident that they will be disappointed.

Hey! Anyway, Half-Life is called one of the coolest things ever, with the first game back in 1998. Half Life III (Half Life 2: Episode 3) has been hyped sense 2008, when Episode 2 came out. You now notice Valve has no idea 3 exists (Half Life 2: Episode 2, TEAM FORTRESS 2, Left 4 Dead 2) See what I mean?

It's not as great as it used to be. When it came out, it was revolutionary, and thoroughly awesome.
As a piece of gaming history, it's close to essential. Judged on its own merits though, gaming has moved on and Half Life is showing its age (as you would expect from a game made around 15 years ago).
You should be able to get it cheaply in the upcoming sales. Mow a lawn or two now and you'll be king of the world in a few days time...

They're still worth a playthrough - HL1 is decent and HL2 (plus episodes) is one of my favourite games of all time. Every so often I'll think about a certain section and smile to myself like a right plank.

Personally I didn't like it as a whole. The story was good but I played it long after it came out so it felt odd. I guess it was better when it came out in general.
