Every now and then, somebody asks why some of us "throw our money away" on total strangers. Here is yet another example of why some of us love gifting.

okay, they found 5 people willing to gift, but you can't see the 200 that said "screw this" in the video :P

on a serious note, I'd say it's a big difference if you gift because you really feel like it or because there's a camera rolling.

Call me cynical but I'm pretty sure those people didn't have to pay a dime. It was a PR stunt but it was still cute and somewhat moving. :3

Kind of like when Oprah gave away cars...

Read the small print... the manufacturer gave the cars away to Oprah to give, so really Oprah didn't spend any money, in fact, she MADE money giving away donated items.
It's a cool thought, and people got free stuff, but I'd bet my paycheck J.C. Pennys funded it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

On top of which, as it is a "gift", Oprah doesn't pay taxes on it. The person getting the car has to claim and pay taxes on it.

Clearly, there are people willing to give. If not, the BILLIONS of dollars given to charities would happen every year. Every holiday, birthday, and just because gift you and everyone you have ever come across in your life wouldnt have happened. People pay off strangers lay aways all the time. People give to random strangers on the streets all the time. As cynical and bitter about people as I am, even I can not deny that there are people out there that will give you the their last shirt and pair of pants if they think you need them.

I think the "billions of dollars" have more to do with tax deduction.
but all in all I agree. only recently there were pupils in the super market, offering to pack your groceries for a small fee (they were collecting money for a school trip).
I didn't want them to do the packing for me, because when I put my stuff in my baskets I have a "special system", but when I was done and paid the clerk, I turned around gave the pupils some money, too.

however, I wouldn't have bought them a couch or jewelery as shown in the youtube clip.

I considered that, but you'd get too many people wishlisting everything; even making another steam account to do so, if necessary.

The only real way to work that out would be to have an on-site wishlist that caps at a certain number of games, and gives bonus entries when you go after those games. Sure, you'll still have some people trying to work around the system, but at least a decent number of people'd get preference on the games they want.

If you start putting limits up based off my steam wishlist, which I use to keep games in mind, I'd be mighty irked. :X

Just have a, say, "Most Wished Games" list on SteamGifts, limited to, say, 10 games; and once you swap a game out, the list locks for future changes for 2 days [so you can't just keep swapping games out for individual giveaways].

Permalink

Or like "first 5-10 positions on wishlist".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I only enter the giveaways for games that are on my wishlist.
But I don't agree they should limit the wishlist games to a specific number. All the games and DLC's on my wishlist are there because I want them (all 787 of them).
And I don't know why people would want that. The number of games on my wishlist makes no difference to my chances of winning a giveaway. It helps me enter only the giveaways for games I really want, instead any giveaway that will end soon.
The reason I don't enter giveaways for games I don't want is exactly because I don't want them, so I prefer spending my points and try to win a game I really want and that I'll play and enjoy. I may not want it but I'm sure someone else does and that person will be very happy when they win a game they want, just like me.
To be honest, I don't care why some people enter GA's or not. If it's for cards or because they want the game. The purpose of this website is to giveaway and try to win games. Those people aren't doing anything wrong. That's more of a moral thing you know.

That is one of the flaws living beigns have developed. Most of the times you expect to get something back sometime later, also some people feel good by saying to themselves that they are not expecting anything in return, but the fact of feeling good it's a reward, so you're getting that. I personally like to give because most of the time you don't know the people stories also I like to know what people like.

I can understand people giving games or even clothes, but a wedding ring ? i wouldnt give that to anyone beside the girl i want to get marry, even less a stranger... that video cant be real

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Video is probably fake, more PR vids are. HOWEVER, there are people that donate/give thousands of dollars away either directly or indirectly. Every year, there are stories of people paying off strangers layaways, loans/debt, and so on. Is paying for a wedding ring much different than someone buying expensive crystal and china youll never use for a wedding?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It is because they pick a random person out of the store, i get that people donate lots of money the first example i get right now is the creator of five night at freddy's but this is totally diferent, anyway it is probably fake so it doesnt matter

Kinda easy to give to a stranger when the store actually pays for it..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

True, but if you'd ever been in that situation, you would know that, at a certain point, it doesn't matter. The camera and the store fade into the background and all that matters is you and the person to whom you are giving.

Love the video. I got a lil choked up there at the one woman crying.

I do love to give. I give away games here when I can afford to, and I give away my stuff in real life, too, like whenever I upgrade an old 4 year old laptop or mobile phone, I don't sell the old ones, I give them to people who wouldn't otherwise have something.
