What do you want to have this Christmas?
I don't believe in Santa nor do I celebrate Christmas and won't get any presents anyway.
Don't think I ever wrote a letter to Santa/Sinterklaas, not even when I was a kid
Only wishlist I have is on Steam, no clue what I would ask if I could ask for a present from some imaginary person to be honest...

I just never understood why people celebrate stuff they didn't do anything for, I mean celebrating because you graduated or because you did something else I can understand, but just because someone tells you it's a special day in which you did nothing? I just don't get it, they say Christmas should bring joy and such, but people just tend to get so overstressed about it, why not just... I don't know... just skip it then?
Well, I looked at my wishlist real quick and if I would choose a game I know I would actually play soon-ish I would say one of these I guess:

That's because you're an adult and probably don't have kids of your own. I was exactly the way you are until my niece was born, but for the last 7 years New Year and her birthday (and for the last 2,5 - also my nephew's birthday) actually started to make sense: it's contagious, this silliness actually becomes enjoyable when you see a happy little one. Also, for a mother her kid's birthday is actually a day when she's done something huge and super-important, so I've a habit to congratulate both a birthday boy/girl (because of tradition) and their mother.

I indeed have no kids, I also dislike kids and here Christmas isn't that big as in, we have Sinterklaas, not even sure if kids here actually believe in Santa? (Just asked my mom to confirm and she also says, it's not common here to believe in Santa).
Never really understood the whole lying to kids while we, at the same time, teach kids lying is bad m'kay!
Comment has been collapsed.
Kids believe in weird things. For instance, we in this family are not big on lying to kids as well, and my niece realized that Grandfather Frost was not real when she was like 3. On the other hand, she believes in leshys living in the forests and Cthulhu and some mysterious blup - in the oceans. She's a smart child, but looks like believing in various nonsense is normal for this age (apparently they've got their own myth culture).
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't agree with lying to your children either, but what makes things special for Christmas is the mystery of giving and receiving gifts from people you know and care about. Adding a fantasy story or tale around the whole event makes the whole purpose more meaningful.
Christmas at this point it's an advertisement time where people spend a lot of time decorating their homes and spending money on stuff they will eventually take down weeks if not months later. Christmas is never been the same for me since I've grown up and it only felt special when I was little and by the time I believed that Santa existed. Once that was gone, so was the jolly and the excitement.
This is why I believe it should be kept, but explained realistically what's the whole point of the celebration. People forget the actual symbolic meaning behind it and why it even started. Now it's more a pagan tradition mixed with religious broken beliefs.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, like I said, we don't believe in Santa here so Christmas has always been a typical decoration and present thing.
As a kid we have presents under the tree and could unpack them after we had a breakfast together, after that we had to visit both my grandmas and it would be done again.
The decorating and then removing it again took most of the time and never cared much about it.
I see it more as, if you want to see people you care about, do so, if you don't want to, then don't! But this whole Christmas thing is more about who has the best decoration and who spend the most money then anything else and it just makes everyone stressed and for what?

people just tend to get so overstressed about it
Totally agree with you on this one. I never understood why people get almost obsessive with stuff like this ... It's just a holiday.. just enjoy it ..
But apart from that - as I said - it's a holiday, with some kind of theme that gives another chance for you to spend time with loved ones. No one in my close group of friends have kids so a year or two ago we got together, got drunk, stuffed our faces with food, played games and enjoyed ourselves in the theme of Christmas (with making a deal that no one gets presents for each other)
You can totally make it your own deal
Comment has been collapsed.
Of course you don't need a specific holiday.. We have different traditions we keep to every year which involve randomly picked weekend or vacation and is solely based on our own planning.
But it's cool to have some specific holidays that have a theme. We have in my country summer solstice celebration where it's tradition to stay up whole night. I mean you can do that on any random night - but this tradition involves making and wearing wreath made from oak leaves, drinking bear, jumping over fire and listening to traditional music you wouldn't listen in your daily life. It offers that much more fun to the regular gettogether.. Same with christmas - prepare the 12 meal course, get out tangerines, put on some annoying christmas music..
Not saying you have to do these things - Completely normal for someone not to care for these things.. I for one don't celebrate anythingwith my family as we just don't do stuff like that (including birthdays even) .. But just giving an insight into why I think having a traditional holiday is cool

I get what you mean by it and it's quite strange if you think about it. As an adult, I no longer even bother decorating or caring so much about it as it's an event where most of my adult life I've spent working. I long for the days when it used to feel special because the whole concept of Christmas was there.
Do I think that Christmas celebration should end and everybody should stop doing this? No, I think people need some time of the year to make it important, especially a time like winter when it's all dark, rainy/snowy and cold in the Northern hemisphere. If we'd have no more holidays and no more celebrations, I'd think that the whole year would be just a day like the rest and whole life would be somewhat depressing as this whole discussion started to be. π

I am fine with people celebrating it, don't get me wrong, what I dislike is the whole crazy hype about it.
Like I said, stuff like the crazy amount of stress, the forced stuff, etc. it went from something like being with your loved ones to some sort of materialistic weird thing and that is just sad :(

That I can see and totally agree with, this is why I don't bother doing what most people do regarding decorating. I don't have the time to even enjoy it really and I feel it's just too much of a hassle putting everything up just to tear it back down.
I do enjoy the sales and the food and the fact that people are TRYING... just trying to be more kinder and happier. I wish people would be more cheerful and jolly the whole year and realize that the whole point of Christmas is that what we really need is a positive mindset.

In one word - commercialization
That is the thing that I totally agree with you and that is the one huge thing I really hate with christmas and similar holidays... I mean even easter and valantines day and whatever corporations can get their hands on get ruined just to earn more money...
It all has been turned into "it's normal to spend your whole bonus / wage on useless shit for others". Just slap the holidays name on it, call it something exclusive and sell it three times more expensive.. pathetic ... That's why my company in general agree not to gift anything or usually go with something practical, but at the same time cheap as possible.

Ahh, misspoke here (language barrier)
What I mean was "company of friends"
As for company I work at :D We wont even get a paid night out.. I work in a "state owned company" or whatever it's called. It's a university and the budget is granted by the government. Meaning nothing can be spent without huge beurocratical nonsense. Not like private companies that only have to abide declaring taxes correctly and whatever the management deems appropriate to spend on.
One of the reasons I mentioned having no pay raise in my other comment - Meaning my salary is set by regulations toward such government owned companies.. So I can't just ask 50% raise and argue with the boss if it's against regulation ....

I want a lot. I want a new PC (with Ryzen 5900X, RTX 3080 and a huge 4K monitor, yeah baby!). I desperately need a new sofa, a one I'd use both as a sofa and a bed (I mean, the one I sleep on is about than 35 years old). Actually, finally getting an apartment of my own would be nice. I wouldn't mind a cure for diabetes, hypertension and clinical depression as well. And a comfortable and well-paid job. Also, an intelligent and caring man (not a baby though, I'm so over the desire to become a mother). But most of all I'd like to have my dad back, I miss him so damn much.
Realistically though, I'm not really expecting to get anything this year. Except for dad's inheritance that's supposed to arrive mid-January (nothing even remotely impressive, but it will be a large sum for me). Then I'll probably go ahead and buy that sofa, it's obviously more important than upgrading my PC. And leave the rest of the sum on the bank account for now. As for New Year, I'll probably just buy a bunch of games on the winter sale.

Hell, I even have to buy myself a birthday gift on that day.

If you think about it, this is the best time historically speaking for GPU manufacturers to produce. The rate stuff sells is greater than they can produce it. We can only hope that company owners create more larger manufacturing sights and are able to produce more, but that being said, if crypto crashes, so will the profits and that may affect companies producing less, making less money and potentially investing less technology. It's a double blade. I want it to end, but I don't want crypto hunters to lose money either. I'm not a crypto farmer, and I'm constantly thinking if I should or not hop the wave, but hey, humans will always find a way to make money, one way or another.

There are quite a few things which may be good for companies but aren't good for consumers or the world, and crypto mining is one of them. In general I'd say that CPU companies would have had quite good demand even if without mining, and if these companies actually make mining a focus that will only detract from technology, as the needs of mining are different than the needs of gaming or scientific research.
Mining is bad. You can try to find a siver lining, but that will hardly make it good. Mining is designed to waste more processing power the more people participate in it, and most crypto coins' only reason for existence is to make money, so they bring zero actual value to the world.
humans will always find a way to make money, one way or another.
I'd rather that people make their money constructively rather than destructively. Normally people get money from helping create something or helping others in some way. "Money from nothing" is a clear indication that there's something wrong.

I am not a miner, but I don't see why this is a bad thing. If these people, or at least some of them are actually bringing value to their community or life, I don't see why that's a bad thing. I think having your PC generate money for you while you run it is a lot more profitable than just gaming on it and wasting your life on it. I am completely aware that I fall in the 2nd category and it sounds a little hypocritical, but I believe that there's a lot more than just gaming to it. I don't agree miners owning tens and thousands of graphic cards that mine, while the average gamer can't even purchase a bloody GPU because he can't afford it or can't find it anywhere available at MSRP price on the market.
That's the problem, not the miner. In fact, I think crypto mining has its benefits if you're willing to use your computer for a lot more than just gaming and surfing the web. They aren't doing anything harmful in that sense, so that's it. At this point, I think they also struggle to get new GPUs for upgrades for them and it's a costly and tedious process to get a whole crypto mining operational.
I'd rather that people make their money constructively rather than destructively. Normally people get money from helping create something or helping others in some way. "Money from nothing" is a clear indication that there's something wrong.
The concept of money is a manmade design and I could very easily create out of nowhere a piece of paper or coin and convince a lot of people that that's worth something that they will value it as real money. That's how crypto works in a nutshell and also money as itself. Just because you don't dig it, doesn't mean it's illegal or it's sketchy or it's evil. You probably dislike it because like anything else, too many people speak about it. It became like a religion and you've become an atheist hating on the concept.
If you'd give yourself time to look at it differently, you'd either favor it be neutral, like myself, about it.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's a naive point of view that a lot of people take. Let me try to address some of the points.
First is the matter of money from nothing. Yes, it exists, but when done on scale it always indicates a serious problem. If a country is printing lots of money, it's because its economy is in trouble. If a stock grows quickly, not in relation to the success of the company, that's a bubble, and it often indicates manipulation. (That's already been proven in several cases for crypto, and I assume happens a lot, because crypto has very little inherent value.)
Money has to come from somewhere. If it's just created, its value grows lower. So what crypto does is syphon it from fiat currency. In this respect it's a scam: it convinces people that something has value in order to get them to part with real money so that the owners of crypto coins will get it.
I might liken mining crypto to scalping, the practice of buying a product that's in demand and selling it much higher. Neither is illegal, but the people doing both are helping themselves at the expense of others.
You might not like people having mining farms, but that's inherent to anything that produces money for nothing. If there's a method to make money that doesn't require doing actual work, then the majority of its users will be the rich and unscrupulous. That's one reason ownership of crypto is even more skewed than money ownership in "the real world".
By the way, that is not to say that the idea of crypto is bad or that blockchain technology is worthless, but the idea of mining is bad. It's a terrible concept that was designed to appeal to the greed of people while being awfully wasteful. Mining was designed to waste more computing power the more computing power is put into it. That's a terrible concept which means that technological advancement is meaningless for it. In all other fields a better CPU or better GPU allows more complex things to be done. For mining, it only makes it more wasteful.
If you'd give yourself time to look at it differently, you'd either favor it be neutral, like myself, about it.
I don't think I'll look at it differently, because my opinion is products of a lot of thinking over a long period of time. I was mining when it was still possible to mine Bitcoin on a PC. It took me quite a few years to realise just how bad the idea is, and how people's greed is blinding them.

I don't like the direction the crypto is going. From minding as you've said from nothing and making money into buying these NFT's that is just a waste of precious time and goes to show how money, as we know it, has no value unless we give it.
That one dollar sitting in your pocket means nothing unless you give it value.
I've never mined any kind of crypto and didn't join the trend of NFT's because it's a concept that will eventually die off. The problem is that it made a lot of people wealthy that never did understand the concept of actually earning that money through traditional work or hard work.
We live in an era where smart work replaces the old, traditional way of making an earning. I remember the days when I used to talk to my friends about earning money while playing video games and we are currently living in that era right now, where you have YouTube and Twitch to thank for because it allows us to make a living off of that.
This is why I'm saying that despite you and I not adapting to the trend or liking minimizing at all won't change how the world spins and we're either going to sit and watch, complain how this whole thing is unfair, sketchy and unpractical, or join and make an earning.
The choice is ours to make. I've learned to NEVER SAY NEVER because you can never know how you'll adapt to a new concept and you'll be required to implement it once more in your life. This is why I say you should give it more thought.
Instead of hating on it, understand the value coming from it and if it's not affecting you directly, leaving you homeless or without food on your table, it shouldn't be a problem.
Yes, there's a constant shortage in GPU's and I hate that just as much, but at least mining brings the video cards to some use, while the scalpers only buy to resell and profit off of people. That's where I find it a problem.

It's the same saying money can't buy you happyness, but it sure can buy you things that can make you happy, to turn it around not having much only a few can still remain happy and positive in such a situation. (f.e a roof is also important and for my own place you also need money).
Thanks.

Without a doubt money is important, but ultimately it won't make you happy. Most people I know that make a lot of money do it not because they want to make it, because they have enough, but they do the work that pays them the bills and more than they can spend because they enjoy what you do. If you manage to do that, no matter how little or how much you make, what matters is that you enjoy your journey.

All I would want is to have good health and happiness. I'm just feeling a little fed up with everything that's happened to me and my family over the past couple of years. Bullshit giving us a break would be nice.

I can't wait for the Steam Deck to hit the decks and people having to buy them. Maybe then the whole rush to get a new GPU would slow down a bit. If people have so many options to pick from then there's a possibility that more stuff are going to be available.

A game: Crusader Kings 3 Royal Edition
Heck, I'd be happy if it was on sale for 80% off π€£

Be sure to check the Paradox store on their website, too! Sometimes it will go on sale there. Tbh I would pay full price for the base game and just wait until the DLC go on sale 80% off. It's going to be supported for many years, Crusader Kings 2 lasted 8 years of updates. It's my favorite game, consider shelling out a bit more ^.^
Also did you know it's on Microsoft Game Pass? It's $15 for month unless you can find a new customer coupon for $1.

That's a great suggestion, if you don't mind not having it on Steam, you'll definitely get your money's worth. When I first found out of Crusader Kings 3, I checked Crusader Kinds 2 and with all the DLC's and stuff was a bit of a turn-off because I thought I would not be able to afford it all in one go. So, over the course of 2-3 months, I got them all.

I'd like some boost of serotonin please for Christmas, thank you.
Been feeling down lately .. Work has gone to shit without any pay raise, car has been breaking down, having bad luck in dating, had to move quit far from friends so less meeting them, a lot of rejections for new job opportunities (two rejections just last week after getting through several interviews and tests for a position where it felt it went good), can't even manage to get in good mood to be able to go out without being a burden to others...
Realistically I'd be happy just for an opportunity to go to a party and hopefully get my mood out of a rut.
But enough of me being sorry for myself. Happy Holidays for everyone on SG and hope you all get what you wish for

I hope that 2022 treats you a lot better. Maybe all these wishes won't come true that easily and things do take a lot of time, but do know that they will happen eventually.
The best way to get them is getting to work on yourself. I believe finding a job during Christmas time or in this period is rather difficult, so it's all about being patient until the whole period ends. Afterwards, give it another shot. I am also looking for a job, but I feel that either the ones I want isn't as they are really described or I'm having no luck with the type of recruiters I encounter.

Thanks. I hope, too.
Yeah, it takes work, definitely. Totally understand that and agree. Of course I'm taking steps by trying to get everything together slowly, but sadly can't get ahead of stuff piling up. Hence my little self loathing rant.
As for work - yeah, I've pretty much given up on getting an answer until second week of January .. will send in some applications to places I have saved. Will just sit back and weather out holidays. At least I have my current work and I have some responsibilities in the project that I can't drop the ball on (as the previous manager did sadly and I had to jump in to save the day at the cost of my sanity)
I'm at a stupid situation where I'm basically looking for an entry level position, but every decent company that offers livable wages already have experienced people applying for these entry level positions. I've been looking for entry level positions in IT project management.... The things is - experienced regular project managers with 15+ years of experience are ready to settle for almost minimum wage just to get into IT project management as it promises higher gains over time ..... bad luck for me as there is no surprise who will the company choose... Can't get into engineering projects due to lacking technical experience ... can't get into media production as I'm only hobbyist movie maker (I applied to several places which revolved around filming / streaming events and whatever client wants) ... Been pondering moving abroad but that would be huge step and I doubt that as an immigrant I'd have any better luck in another country
Comment has been collapsed.
I moved to another country 3 years ago and I can tell you it is hard in the first years and you'll feel like it's better to just first start a job at the entry level because you don't know how things are running in the country.
You also don't have any connection and you need to pull yourself up if you like it or not because you don't have family or friends to look after you if you end up jobless. Just hang in there and you'll get something close if not what you want.

Quantity is not everything. I mean, you could buy tons of indie games and still spend not so much; on the other hand, you could buy, for example, Elden Ring, God of War, Mass Effect remaster, Days Gone and Stalker 2 and get broke :)
Comment has been collapsed.
You should. The first game has got a bit of quality of life improvements, but everything else is basically a retexture that you can easily get with the help of mods. It's unreasonably expensive, and I don't regret buying it with a much smaller discount only because I was grieving intensely at that moment, and games helped me remain sane (also got Days Gone back then; it's visually pleasing, perfectly optimized and features probably the best facial animations I've ever seen in games, but it's basically yet another generic zombie action game with yet another boring jock as a protagonist, I wasn't impressed).

Think about this being a letter to Santa. π π»
What would you want him to give you this end of the year as a Christmas gift?
I think I would go with the second option. An RTX 3070/3080 would be amazing so I can finally complete my dream gaming rig.
