While I wait for feedback in the discussion about polls, I'll setup a couple on the homepage as a trial to see if anyone votes or participates.

To start, the 90s were a great decade for FPS games. If you were gaming at that time, which classic FPS game/series did you enjoy the most?

Personally, I remember installing DOOM and Heretic from floppy disks. I was hooked on those two and I also spent a fair amount of time with Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold. After that I recall using HyperTerminal to connect with a friend to play Quake II co-op, although I don't think my family appreciated the phone constantly ringing late at night as our modems tried to establish a connection to game together. Do you have any memories from these early games?

I have to agree on it being by far the best multi-player experience from any FPS of the 90s

Goldeneye didn't age very well though, perfect dark completely dethroned it for me.

I remember playing quite a bit of Doom, maybe some Wolfenstein and Quake. But Half-Life was the best one for me by far. I would have added more options in the poll such as Blood, Turok, Heretic and Hexen.

Half-life changed my perception of what a first person shooter could be. A story with other characters and dialogue?? One big continuous world instead of a series of “find the elevator” levels? It was so cinematic. Completely blew my mind.

I had a lot of fun with Doom, Unreal Tournament, and Quake, but I think I enjoyed GoldenEye the most because I grew up with Nintendo from a much younger age. We probably didn't get our first computer until around 96 or 97, but I was already gaming on NES, SNES, and N64. Also, I feel like the Half Life games are very overrated.

I started with Wolfenstein 3D and Spear of Destiny. Till today i would be able to find all of the secrets on most of the maps. Loved Doom 1 and 2. For second one i had to upgrade my PC. Then it was of course houndreds of hours in Duke 3D and Quake (I and II). Unreal was mostly to show graphic and was used as a benchmark. Game itself was great as well with nice AI. But the most immersive experience was Half-life.

You updated the poll? You should troll everyone and change Half Life to something really bad. Please don't ever give us the ability to modify polls :)

I'm missing the "I didn't play any of these" or "I don't really play FPS" poll option here (FPS is actually one of my hidden tags on the steam store), so I couldn't accurately reflect a vote. But I'm posting a comment for letting you know that the poll certainly did catch my eye in terms of visibility, if that is also the sort of feedback you are looking for.

Wolfenstein was banned in Germany, but I'm fairly certain my brother would have enjoyed just about any of these. I do believe I've seen him play GoldenEye for sure. I guess Turok doesn't count? Or did that come sooner/later than the 90s? Time is a blur XD

Ay, high five! I occasionally played it on my brother's console. That alien brain-seeking canon was crazy. Or the multiplayer mode where you could play a velociraptor? Awesome. While I only had few experiences with the Turok series, I look back at them fondly, even as someone who isn't into FPS much, haha.

Yes, the first time I played an N64 game I was just blown away. And while the industry is now claiming ever higher to push graphics to limits the human eye can't even differentiate anymore, I still look at those chunky polygons fondly. For example, the Ocarina of Time remake for 3DS was great and I loved it and its quality of life improvements, but only the N64 version can fully hit that nostalgia itch sometimes. Some graphics age poorly in hindsight but N64 graphics just didn't, haha.

I just remembered, my bro was also playing Jet Force Gemini, I don't recall if it was FPS or TPS but I loved watching that too. Insectoid enemies and cute furballs to rescue, among other things. So while I don't play shooting games I can still very much enjoy watching people play them :D

While FPS isn't my typical cup of tea, I still take the time to play games within that genre...especially if it blends into one of my favorites, has an amazing story, or is considered a classic. But mostly single player, I'm not competitively enjoying any multiplayer FPS. I also rarely play anything horror related, so with it being both horror and FPS you might be surprised that I played (and enjoyed) having a very tense playthrough of Alien: Isolation.

Other FPSs I played and enjoyed were Bioshock Infinite for the story, Borderlands 2 & 3 with friends, Call of Juarez solo gunslinger, Portal & 2 are apparently considered FPS, Sanctum is an interesting tower defense-FPS hybrid, RAGE single-player, Red Faction campaigns, Shadow Warrior & 2 are hilarious, Sniper Elite 3 & 4 for the nutshots, WildStar MMO, annnnnd Thief (which is more of a Stealth game imo).

I plan on playing DEATHLOOP soon (it's installed right now as well as Cyberpunk 2077), as well as Dishonored franchise because I know they are good, I just put FPS at a lower priority than Strategy, 4X, Sim/builder, most RPGs other than JRPGs, Puzzle, Tactics, Hacking, Story, Deck-builder, and XCOM-style TBTactics games.

i had to say Goldeneye as that is the only one i have played for any length of time - but should it be on this list? it was only one game and not a series and i don't really remember any other (though maybe there were some) James Bond games in the 90s

Only was born in the 90s so hard to vote on what was the best one from 90s. Started gaming only in 2000s so games from that period where the ones that made me fall in love with gaming. But still the names are the same mostly. I remember playing Doom 3 and Unreal Tournament (cant remember which one though)

So even if a decade later still the same games drew me in the gaming. I don't doubt that if I'd be of age in 90s to play games it would have been one of these to grab me the most.

DOOM was the earliest FPS game I played
Unreal Tournament was the most fun I had in a FPS.

There's news of a GoldenEye 007 remaster. Even 007 website announced it.

Quake

(。・Θ・。)…I remember when I was playing with joy because Mankind had come out with a personal computer for home use.
( *・Θ・)σ💻🎶
I think back to the sound of the 56k modems used by the human race and the days of grappling hooks often seen in multiplayer games, firing grenade launchers and buzz kills.

Harf-life

It doesn't seem that old.
(I don't recall playing it on my computer at the time because the Steam client was overloaded and I didn't think it was practical)
Of course, if you have the right operating environment, it is a masterpiece.

I played and liked all of them except Unreal, but Goldeneye was my favorite by a country mile. Super fun multiplayer aside, the sorta bite-sized task-based mission structure (with more tasks on higher difficulties!) was something I hadn't seen before (or at least not presented in so sleek a way), and it was my go-to yay-I'm-home-from-school singleplayer game for the better part of a year.

Like someone else mentioned before, would love a 'I don't play FPS's' or some sort of choice, though can also understand why you didn't add that choice.

Also, could we please get a way to make the poll smaller? like folding it in so we don't see more than just the question? Now it's way to big and in your face every time.

I gotta go with Duke Nukem 3D, not the first FPS I played (I think that probably goes to Wolf 3D) but the first one that really blew me away, and also my first online multiplayer game. Laggy Duke matches over dialup FTW, a gaming experience I'll never forget!

Also remember Blake Stone, I played that more than DOOM though I think it was the same engine. Heretic was pretty cool too though it got really hard towards the end if I remember, never finished that one. Bringing in the 2000s, Return to Castle Wolfenstein was great. Still play that one on GOG from time to time.

I think Half Life still kinda holds up. The remake, Black Mesa is really good too, they basically remade the game with new assets and better graphics, but kept the design philosophy of the game.

Hard to choose. Goldeneye was my very first FPS and was awesome on so many point... But i have to say, Half Life set the standard for FPS at a so much heigh... I was completely surprised by how good the game was and unexpected to live such experience. It's still today one of my best gaming discoveries (back then it was harder to know how the game were if you didn't buy magazine).

Also special mention to Unreal series. It was an awesome multiplayer game, with so many fun weapons back then. Always liked it more than Quake.
