Just feeling a bit overworked after 2 moths back from 6 years of odd jobs and mild suffering as a poor. I've been lucky enough to start turning things around again and have indulged some wants in the realm of video game peripherals but haven't had much time for them as of late working full time. Maybe I just need to try and sleep more to eventually be able to shove more gaming in somewhere... In any case, I've got a treat for you this All Hallows' Eve: F A S T

Edit: Work(Study.)

Have you looked into your ergonomics? Making sure your arms are properly supported, nice right angles, straight wrists and such?

Well, my work isn't a desk job but all manual labor so that's unfortunately not something I can achieve, even if I tried. So like, while that would work for gaming perhaps, it won't work at work.

Yeah, it may help to have proper ergonomics at home, but clearly wouldn't solve your issue.

You need to give your arm more room. The easy fix for me was an enormous mouse pad and matching desk. The Steelseries QCK+ is what I'm on and I could care less the brand, the thing is massive and is of enough quality to be serviceable and functional on the benchmark Razer Deathadder Expert.

Though I also dropped the money on an Elite controller like a dumb ass, so...

Yeah, the plague for the US. Commuting that actually takes hours. Luckily in Europe there's little reason to need to commute a very long time unless you're in the biggest cities of the continent.

Though, that 1 hour for cooking's pretty reasonable. It's not like you'll game for 8 hours anyways :D

Amusing that you say that in response to Fnord, who lives in Sweden. Commuting clearly isn't just a US problem (though boy is it a problem in the US).

And Fnord didn't include the time to eat the food, or get ready for the day, get ready for bed, do daily chores, etc. It's a wonder we find any time to game at all. :)

The city I live near, Stockholm, only has about 1 mil inhabitants, yet it takes me about 40min just to get to the city center. With my previous job, I had nearly 3h commuting per day, and I was not even going from one end to another of the city + suburbs, and it was all time on the subway, so no traveling on congested roads by bus.

1h eating, 1 hour browsing SG, 1h getting ready for the day / bed, 0.5-1 hours doing daily chores, 0.5 hours keeping our mortal bodies from failing... It all adds up, and suddenly you're sitting down to play a game only to notice that it's time to get ready for bed and you wonder where your day has gone.

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that.

I too have been sleeping less lately, but that's less insomnia and more poor decision making and not wanting to go to sleep when there's a spire that I could be slaying. I mean, it's not going to slay itself.

A family member has a different sleep issue - sleep apnea. It's like the exact opposite of insomnia in that you fall asleep all the time, and yet kind of the same in that you don't get any rest and are always tired. :(

Same Problem here, have an very bad PC.

Pentium 4 with 3 GHz, its the only thing what is good in that crap thing. :D
32 MB On Board Video/Graphiccard
512 MB Memory RAM (Normaly 1 GB, but Stick is damage)
2x 500 GB Harddrives, but 1 i cant use, cause the port is damage.
And Win XP

Thats my Crap System and since Private very complicated, long and sad Story. No Money for buying a better System.

My Librarys getting fuller and fuller trough many things, but cant play them a moment. Hope someday i can, hope someday we are out of that Hell. ;-)

Well, you're in a position where an upgrade will cost almost nothing. If you are able to buy games then you'll also be able to buy an upgrade for your PC :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, i cant Upgrade this PC, cause the parts are to old and not easy to get, seconds it gets all damage, need a New Board and stuff. So impossible.

You know nothing at all. And with buyng Games, mostly are Traded, Won on Giveaaways, was for Free. So very few what was paid and then if it was a very good Sale. But with that, what it was paid, for that few Games, could never Upgrade or buy a other PC.

My PC and Board getting damage, if port is damage for my second Harddrve and much more. Its waste of Money and if would get parts, more expensive and even, would be still very bad and still couldnt play any of the Games.

So why i should, if i would have Money, waste to try, for Upgrading it? Its like i would burn then Money.

So you want to be smart, want to give Tips, but knows nothing about it here. So better be silent. ;-)

And also dont know our Situation at all, there is no Money for saving or anything.

Im not in any postion, where i could do anything. Or else i would have done that already or do you think, i like how it is right now? For sure not.

Thank you for your kindly help, but if it would be all so easy, i wouldnt have a PC like that. Its harder then you and all others think. ^^

If i Upgrade the PC then, i only get few MB Videocard, its hard to get an 512 MB Card and that is very expensive and very hard to get here in my place. And that is highest Card for it.

I cant fully Upgrade with the RAM either and so on. So wasted Money and since everything gets damage slowly, need whole new Board and stuff.

So better then, if would have, save for a Newer System, what CAN Upgrade and not waste for something, what is impossible. So always think twice, before you do such a thing or else could be wasted. ;-)

We take the lint to see Disney movies, and purchase Junior Mints for the lint.
We tuck the lint into bed at night, telling it a grand tale of lint of old.

But we never, ever lick the lint.

Last job I had, allowed me to get up later in the morning giving me more time in the evening, but I had an hour to get to the job and an hour to get back home. Trow in eating, some social activity in between and even if I had an odd hour to game, I just couldnt get myself around to it..
I remember opening a game and closing it instantly after realizing I cant concentrate..

Had to move because enrolled in university again. So looking for a job in the city I moved to and while I dont have the job Im trying to enjoy gaming to the max because I just feel like I'll have no time or will to play then...

I game about 3 hours per week. Sometimes less or none. Occasionally more, for instance when I'm sick - which is not a good trade-off by the way.

I have a challenging job and I'm married and we have 5 small children. My life is full with good things. Less entertainment in my life because it is full of goodness is just fine with me.

I sympathize with those whose lives feel empty and yet they have little time to find enjoyment. That is a very challenging place to be. I suggest, though, that in those circumstances, cramming in more time for entertainment is not a great solution. Working to change the circumstances of your life that you are unhappy with is worth doing. And most of us are not as trapped by circumstance as we think we are.

One of the reasons that people still think gaming is "for kids" is that kids - even college age kids - have so much more free time than working people, family people, etc. And so with all that time, you can fill it with time-consuming entertainment. That's why I played mostly big sprawling RPGs when I was younger and single. And now I play more tactical and puzzle games - really, any games that I can play in hour-or-less sessions - and which I can leave for more than a week and come back to without feeling totally lost.

I'm lucky with my job. I can work from home, and it's easy (I do video closed captioning. As in I write the captions for videos). And I can work whenever I feel like it. 3am, 3pm, as long as the deadline is met. So it's easy for me to balance work and hobbies thankfully lol

And no, the pay isn't the greatest xD But I needed a job where I could work from home (I take care of my granny).

For me, I've got a pretty sweet deal. Around 20h per week on average for university, rest is for whatever else. There are busier weeks where it amps up to 70-80h per week during a crunch period, but I'll take that in exchange for a pretty relaxed time for the rest of it.
The next week will see me be in a school for 6 hours a day, so it's pretty chill. 30 hour week for the coming week and 35h for the next one, so more than enough time to game.

As for not being motivated to play, either you just don't play for a while to get the urge or you force yourself into something and most likely you get hooked and in the mood after playing for like 30 minutes.

Well, my girlfriend has been away so I've been having more gaming time this month, which really sounds bad when I say it like that.

What I mean obviously is that with a rather crazy work schedule, I usually keep my free time to spend with my loved ones and with my usual insomnia, I usually play/hobby when I should be sleeping.

I hope your circumstances improve and that you manage to sleep some. It really makes a difference. Or so I'm told.

That's one of my main reasons as to why I don't wanna get a job (the other major reasons being a lack of self-esteem, general dislike of having to interact with people, the crushing pointlessness of doing anything and a teeny-tiny serving of major depression). The only thing I'd ever possibly need money for is video games (which I hardly buy anymore) or a new laptop (for gaming). But both become meaningless if I don't have the time or energy to play video games at all when I'm using up all my time and energy on work.
I tried working as an ""intern"" on an alleged 4 hour work day (thought that was more like 6-12 hours depending on what I needed to do... I'm really bad at half-assing stuff) in some wimpy no-name little programming company in my city for barely above-minimum-wage pay and it was hell. 3+ months of barely any time for video games. Felt like crap the entire time and for a long time afterwards.

Sorry, got kinda rant-y there. I'm afraid I don't have a satisfying answer to your question. :/

I don't really consider those a good justification to be forced into a job that I hate doing. If I have to sell my life away to a job (because "Everyone does it!") in order to... keep on living (food, etc) like that, then I'm better off dead.

Work full time and game a lot in my spare time. Personally I don't think 40hrs/week is a good work/life balance. I'd go for 6 hours/day or 4 days/week as a good balance, but of course it'd have to come without a pay decrease. I recall reading that this is overall beneficial and doesn't reduce productivity, but I doubt it'll catch on,

It's lucky to find jobs that grant you that these days, heck most want you to just work overtime.
Though some grant you 36 hours which you can cram in 4 days.

Sidenote like 100 something years ago? it was perfectly normal to work 10 hour days, even sundays, compared to that we don't even have it that bad.

A lot of people have sleep issues, get forced to wake up early, and yeah loses productivity.
